I consider them different. I feel like gi and no-gi are 2 different (albeit only slightly) sports. :)
Because they are, apples and oranges both come from trees, both are fruits but still very different. Just like Jiu Jitsu is just pre-World War II Judo, Eddie took elements from the originaland added his own creativity, while eliminating what he deemed unnecessary (the gi). This is what makes it different from BJJ. :)
Lol I feel retarded
It only different cause we are awesome :)
its just no-gi jiu jitsu as far as i see it. The more techniques get integrated from other grappling arts the more it moves toward being more appropriately called no-gi grappling IMO.
if you southern oregon guys ever head down through humboldt dont forget me. My coach is 10th planet friendly. he was there when eddie tapped royler and he got his purple from higan.
You can slip out of nogi but its hard to slip out with gi that's the big differents that's my thout.
Im pretty sure Gracie Jiujitsu was more geared towards self defense in its origins, some time ago in Brazil. So many of the techniques were designed to take on larger opponents. (Which is common in self defense/real life altercations). Where as Eddie designed 10th Planet Jiujitsu, more as a tool to be used for getting laid. For instance, simply teaching a girl the electric chair increases your chances of getting some by 45%. An attribute I believe you will be hard pressed to find in typical BJJ. Like they said, Apples and Oranges.
Kind of two different sports but share many of the same ideas-leverage, control, position, strategy.
Like flag football and tackle football, are kinda the same. You catch footballs and make touchdowns. Different sports that use the same core principles.
In the end, do the one the makes you happy. Do both if it tickles your fancy. But by all means don't let others dictate your progression, in anything.
its not bjj...but brazilians were doing it years ago :)
My take.
It's all grappling (Jiu Jitsu being an aspect). BJJ and 10P are different styles of Jiu Jitsu with philosophical differences. 10P arose from the observation of traditional BJJ (Gi Jiu Jitsu) in MMA (getting hit too much, not controlling distance enough, etc). The purpose of 10P was to develop a style of Jiu Jitsu specifically for MMA.
10P has a few philosophical differences, first, 10P sees or "believes" that there are definite differences between GI, NO GI and MMA "grips". It is from this insight that 10P bases it's techniques and training philosophy (Train No GI, develop clinch).
10P puts major emphases on developing and training with MMA effective grips in mind. This translates into a heavy clinching style, fighting and moving from within the clinch to avoid being hit (This is why the rubber guard was developed, trying to make a more effective guard for MMA).
10P is open to new ideas, continuously developing, incorporating or removing techniques based upon the latest developments in the evolving sport of MMA. 10P utilizes "currently" unorthodox techniques, positions -and names :).
I think the problem is some pro-gi people need to stop being dicks (and its not as many as you think) , and some pro-no-gi people need to stop being so sensitive
just a quick edit because i didnt proof read, but what i originally posted below
I think the problem is some pro-gi people need to stop being dicks (and its not as many as you think) , and some pro-no-gi need to some being so sensitive
There is a huge difference for me. Most of which is listed above but also where we train all the grappling competitions are geared toward BJJ and implement IBJJF rules which means we can't lockdown, Twister, Bicep cutters, calf cranks and loads of other sweet moves. Still we're going to enter and still beat them all with their own rules ;D 10P4L!!!!!
There is a fine line between the two, in my opinion as long as your training Jiu-Jitsu what does it matter. I don't think 10th planet or traditional BJJ is a key to success in grappling in MMA. The other range is, wrestling/judo. Jacare proved that the weekend. Rhonda proves it on a regular basis. Vinny proved it the other week with Davies.
the moment you put any outside pressure on the legs that turn the knee, you can be DQ'd for reaping the knee. Also Knee locks are prohibited from blue belt and below as far as I'm aware. I know that the Lockdown doesn't reap the knee but I did it in my last gym and was told by the coach that it would be illegal if I tried it in a competition and I would have been DQ'd. He's a regular referee, Judge and very highly regarded around here.
I've only rolled in one tournament, but I used lockdown like a MF'er, and had no issues.
Rafa Mendes teaches a different style to Marcelo Garcia who teaches a different style to Renzo Gracie. Eddie is different again.
It's all still Jiujitsu!
Lock down is perfectly legal, your instructor was bullshitting you.
Electric chair is too, banana splits are legal at all levels IBJJF
I train both Gi and Nogi BJJ... 10th Planet has different Philosophies as it is designed to work off of the CLINCH
Judo and Greco Roman both have the same goal, take your opponent down. But Judo is tug-o-war based and Greco Roman is clinch based.
Bjj and tpjj both have the same goal, submit your opponent. But bjj is tug-o-war based and tpjj is clinched based.
Judo = bjj.
Greco Roman = tpjj.
It's really that simple :)
Lockdown is technically legal. As is any hip manipulation sub.
Unfortunately it is soley in the competency of the ref. His judgement is final, regardless. Many don't understand the subtleties of intricate unorthodox subs and positions.
One time we were in bumbfuk mississippi and one My guys hit an electric chair. They dq'd him. Lucky for us Eddie was down helpin Belcher and front n' center for the match. I pointed at Eddie, don't think he saw, but the judge immediately rebuked. Kinda epic.
