155 or 170 for Gracie Worlds?

My plan has been to compete at 155 again this year. I'm stuck right now at around 172.

I feel 100% confident that I can win the 170 division, but should I still make the cut to 155? I hate doing the cut. I feel great at 170.

I have 2 more tournaments between now and Gracie Worlds. I'm gonna continue with the strict diet and lifestyle through these tournaments and see how I do in the 165-170 range and then evaluate from there.

I'd love some feedback from some of you guys who have a lot of experience cutting for tournies and competing a ton.

I’ll just say this: if Gracie worlds is like it has been in the past, there will be about 48 hours to recover after your weight cut until you compete opposed 12 or so with the usual night before weigh in. That is because they have weigh in Friday night, gi Saturday and no-gi Sunday. I would double check that this is also the case this year and then take it into account. This will make a cut easier if you choose to do one… Only you know your body and how it will perform best.

I was 175 before and cut to 155 because of the Friday weigh ins, I got back to 170+ by match time. I felt good, but I have stopped trying to lose weight for local weigh ins because its same day weigh ins right before your matches.

Rose Gracie told us when she stopped by the gym last week that No gi weigh ins are on Saturday now.

I know how to administer an IV, 155 if your diet goes well and you feel like the weight cut is good. If the cut just feels like it plateaus around like 165, do not continue, just cut to get to 170 and fight fresher.

Do whatever weight class youll be most comfortable. Just because you cut to a lower weight class doesnt mean youll do better!

Sounds like you want to do 170. So do 170

Give 170 a try worth it for the experience and future reference.

I vote absolute division.

As your friend, my suggestion is to stop worrying about the weight cut, focus on your game and be the strongest and most fit 170 you can be. I think you will be fine in either weight class but I think if you can focus all your attention on honing your incredible skills you'll benefit the most.

I always say im not gonna worry bout cutting weight. Then the tournie approaches. The main reason I adjust weight now is to either avoid a teammate so we can both get gold, or match up with a rival who my ego would like a victory over for various reasons.

Do either of these scenarios apply?

to be honest, it's probably a confidence issue; i feel stronger and faster at 155.

and there's a big difference between 100% confidence and 100% chance of victory :) but you know this. and i know what you meant.

One thing I've found, is the guys that beat me, usually cut weight. But you never know which is gonna be the stacked bracket. 155 or 170, masters or adult, no way to predict. I say 155 with an intelligent or progressive cut. My main reason, escapes. Fuck up on someone who cut 15 lbs and its just harder to escape when they're skilled. Still hard in same weight, but waay easier.

Brandon, I say go 170 if youre confident there! This way you can be more relaxed leading up to the tourney! Besides, I weight 158 and always compete at (a skinny)155 so get your heavy ass outta my weight division

Also.. It looks like Im coming back to Bama to visit family the same time as the tourney at Samford, so I think Im jumping in.. Are you or any of your guys going? Doubt I have a chance to make it up to Decatur though as its a short weekend trip.

he got down to 6% body fat for both fights he used that diet .....

I'm cutting. Last year the guys were all my size with the cut and the next weight class up were monsters. If you feel better at 155, I'd just cut. There will always be those woulda, shoulda, couldas. Just do what makes you the most confident.

The 170 guys prob walk around 185+ which may also mean they are also 6' + tall. Is that an issue at all? Maybe when going for leg locks?
