3 SUBMISSIONS & a Back Take from BOTTOM Side Control

This is my go to path out from under side control. You may think it's low percentage, but its not, and works very well against higher level players (moving fluently from elbow propping up the chest, to knee in, to submission, will keep you a 2 steps ahead of his knee on belly or mount counter). This is also a great transition into pyramid, williams, z, rubber, etc guards if you perfer re-guarding over submission attempts.

Key points:
To get elbow into the chest plate, use a body rotation of a strong cross face from your forearm while doing a hard pull down on his arm controlling bicep. With a bit of bridge/shrimp, it should tuck the sharp of your elbow into his diaphragm, leaving him weightless on top, and you hips completely free and mobile.

Arm bars: the knee you shrimp in should be as high as possible on his ribs, so that your shin is in his armpit, and your foot is trapping his rear shoulder. This will allow you to keep very tight knees on the finish. This will also allow you to keep him high enough off of your chest when going for the arm crush, creating enough space for an effective finish.

Inverted triangle: I find it nearly impossible to finish if I am NOT controlling the trapped arm, and pulling towards me. Keeping his hips away from me is also a Priority.

Thanks for watching. I definitely understand why it seems silly. Try them out with the elbow-to-chest prop. It's shockingly effective, to the point were I consider being side controlled as just a form of perpendicular guard (without gravity, you are essentially in a neutral position. lots of entries to tri, omo, kim, or darce, or even try playing deep half on the top players arms). I used to get made fun of about this, but have gotten very good with it. If I get the chest lifted on my elbow, the vast majority of the time I either get the sub, or if they defend, they give more than enough space transition to a william's guard/pyramid hybrid I use (or any other guard).

Nothing silly about framing :)

To be honest, I actually look for that arm bar a lot. If a guy is a little to loose in his transition or if I can time a shrimp ill go for it. The elbow in is an interesting detail.

All he has to do is switch his hips one way or another and you just isolated your arm for him. Most guys with good sides are constantly switching hips and control.

Good option, but if it's your go to, meaning your partners get caught over and over. They need to up their top side game. How does this stop knee on belly?

Hip switching is only an issue WITHOUT the elbow prop of the chest. It causes them to roll off of the elbow to a position which is advantageous to you. Switching their hip, so they are facing you, is very difficult for them due to your wedged grip on their bicep. It is VERY tight. But, even if they manage to switch that way, they fall low enough to your hips to make the sit up sweep/escape rather simple. Your hand is already in position on the triceps. Hip switch into a twister side control will roll them off your elbow onto your face. A simple bridge will clear them, and provide the option to either roll to the top, or come out the back. THE ELBOW PROP IS ESSENTIAL.

As far as stopping knee on belly, your hips are completely mobile with the elbow prop, and you should already have your knee in attacking or re-guarding. Your knee rising is a much shorter path than him popping up to knee on belly.

Thank you for watching and commenting. Give the elbow prop a try. It provides a huge mechanical advantage. People get caught repeatedly bc its a nice little check mate when done properly.

For the record, I would never share a white or blue belt killer technique. If I cant hit it on a purple or higher, then I file it away with subs like tapping someone with a body triangle.

There is nothing preventing an attack on my farside arm other than general awareness. This technique is to turn a bad situation, such as a very tight, neck twisted, head and arm control, into 1) a way to relieve the pressure 2) create space and keep it 3) almost definitely escape, and 4) possible submit your opponent. For this, I'm willing to risk an americana/arm triangle/arm crush. Avoiding this path bc of a small risk to your crossface arm, would be like throwing out the triangle bc you might get rampaged.

Give it a try. And, I really appreciate your feed back. Finding holes is the easiest way to stop leaks

Attacking the far arm and spinning to the back is what people do in that situation. You're giving space and allowing them that arm.

I love the spinning armbar, but I don't see it as a huge threat as he shows this move. As long as you don't allow them to dominate the far arm and you are aware and use the inside arm to check the hip and stop the 180. The far side armbar is higher percentage when you have the arm controlled and the bottom man on his side.
if you feel him trying to go far the arm you trex you are still in side no worse off.

Far side arm bar isn't a huge threat here. If you are tight it's not that exposed.

I'm going to check this out because I continually get mumped when in bottom side, and don't know any options besides either reguarding or delying the inevitable tap. lol.

This is fun. Elbow detail pretty crucial. Destroyed whites and blues but no upper belts yet. But I let the lower belts pass and work. The higher belts I'm still not letting pass and their pressure is pretty intense if they do. I'm gonna keep developing it. Thanks man.

Without the elbow, it is almost pointless. I'm really glad you're enjoying it. I'll try get some really detailed footage and application of the elbow prop this weekend. And the counters to their counters.

So I originally watched this on my phone so I didnt understand what you were saying about the elbow in or some of the fine details in the video. Thats a great detail. Ill have to play with this a bit.

Now that youre pretty good at it, do you just bait guys into passing your guard just to work this game or is it just a plan B in case a guy does get passed your guard?

Looks good to me. I think it will take me a lot of drilling because I'm a noob, especially with the back take, but looks good.

(Why I never think of this) You have long legs tho. I've never hit that damn reverse triangle, I can't even get it on thight when drilling it. I have midget legs, so I don't think it's for me. (small person legs, sorry)

I liked the strength training for subs you showed in those previous videos. I used to do slow motion kicking with ankle weights before, and people thought it was super silly. The funny thing is; Pro K1 fighters used the same techniques, either ankle weights, rubber bands, or plain slow motion kicking to develop power and speed. It's the same principle that is used in the triangle vids you show.

My escape from underneath side control is Hookshot/bridge with underhook. Good luck stopping that. My treetrunks just explode when doing that shit. *Boom*

First time I ever saw that armbar option was from cyborg. The elbow detail changes the game. I'm also finding that if you start the reguard as soon as you pop, percentages go through the roof. Even on guys expecting it. This was a really cool detail.

The game we are working from this right now is, frame, pop to elbow frame while starting reguard, failed reguard to undertook escape to outside knee trip. Strong whizzers are creating the path to the trip. There is all the dog fight stuffs of course. If you are fishing the underhook, reguard leads to prison guard, opponents hip switch leads to underhook escape from scarf (or in some cases the back).

I would love to hear the paths you guys are developing from here. Maybe we can keep this thread going and find some really cool options with one another. :)

My guard is very hard to pass (unless you have a very good leg drag pass and tree trunk legs), so I'll usually just start from bottom side. I sound like a huge douche saying that, but I have been hopelessly obsessed with guard since day one.

I find that once the elbow is in, replacing guard is about 98% yours to take. And yeah, people catch on, but you have a speed advantage there, and if you miss the armbar, you can literally fall into guard. I'll also post video of countering the switch. Its really only a problem before your elbow is in, but it will definitely fuck up your plans if you telegraph and he hip switches before you get the elbow in.

All of my guard paths lead me to a a perpendicularly positioned hybrid of a pyramid and william's guard, with shin and arm control on the far bicep. I am painfully obsessed with this position. I'll post a video of it when I get a chance.

I find, on a reverse triangle, that if I dont control the trapped arm, there is noway in hell I can finish it. Keeping his hips away from you with a posting arm helps a lot as well. Getting triangled by tree trunk legs sucks. Its harded for you to close the triangle, but it really sucks for the other guy if you get a good lock on.

My competition season is starting June 29, with naga and then I have 4 more leading up to the nogi Pans. I'll film a lot. I've never really been one to film my tourneys (bc I started competing in the expert divisions after training 9 months and was afraid to watch myself get injured like a little pussy), but I have golds from naga, grapplers quest, good fight , and local nonsense. My last tourney was a NAGA, where I lost a draw to Waylon Lowe. I think my team mate has half of that match. I'll find out and upload it. I definitely dont want to come off like a FRAUD who doesnt compete. Sorry. I'll have my match against waylon up soon, or definitely a lot of footage over the summer, and some training rolls so you can see it live.

I do this stuff a lot in rolling. I love that arm bar and triangle. I don't use inverted or the back take, but I use these ideas to do other things.

I am :) i haven't been for awhile but i started playing with it lately. I had to relook this video up because I couldn't remember all the details but this cleared some things up for me.
So that last couple weeks I've been playing with things like this. Putting myself in terrible positions trying to turn them into offensive positions. Mostly bottom side control, empty half guard, and I think it's called flat half guard (top guy has head and arm like they're going for a no hand pass). Jiu Jitsu is beautiful there's no need to follow all the rules :)

I like this vid alot. A grip of my game is similar movements to these with similar control points I hit the armbar and triangle often. Thanks for the vid bro, I think ill get alot of value out of the details and concepts provided. Can't wait to try that grip combo, seems strong -- normally im doing one on hip one on bicep, or more often double on bicep since 2xbicep often turns their away so their weight gets posted on the other arm making it easier to armbar or head looking away a little making it easier to triangle.

Started playing with the elbow in technique tonight with the guys. Seems to be a very good way to get and keep space in bottom side. We'll see how this works out, definitely liking it so far. Thanks for the video.

I've been playing with this first technique - the armbar from the bottom - the problem I find is that I can get the elbow in, no problem, I can bump then up to get the knee in - no problem - but anybody who knows a little jiu jitsu can tell the danger of the knee being in and postures up to knee on belly so you don't get time to get the leg over their head. Got a solution to that?

I'm confused by how they are transitioning to knee on belly, when you have the knee sheild

I'm not picturing how the knee on belly is happening unless you're going slow motion for the technique....?
