Ok so my name is andrew...im a white belt and trained at elite-mma. I have my sparring partner in closed guard and he has his knees in a wide base (very hard to do a scissor sweep) and his elbows in my hips, which makes it really hard to get a armbar going. Not to sure what to do to get a successful armbar with his elbows being right there...any suggestions?
It kinda depends on the skill level of the guy huggin your hips. If he is a high level base monster that can be pretty tuff to deal with. How is your mission/crackhead control to zombie?
Break his posture and get to work.i mean, elbows on the hips? He's already giving up 80%of his posture. Help him the rest of the way then set up triangles and armbars.
You wont be able to set up a traditional armbar with his arms in that position. If you have a good rubber guard the crackhead pump will do the trick. Also I would say pop triangle would be much easier to set up than an armbar. A lot of times you have to force someone to give you what you want or take what they give you...if that makes sense lol.
Im also a white belt but, for what its worth; Position before submission, If hes knows what you're trying then dont battle for it. If you are rolling and slippery, then (for me) its important to use your arms (not hands) to keep the arm you are attacking connected to your body.
The armbar from guard (or any submission really) isn't something you force. Its more about recognizing when they put the arm/elbow in a place where you can capitalize on their mistake. Rather than looking for the armbar, specifically, I suggest attacking with various things until they fuck up and compromise their base or dont defend properly. Maybe drill a series of submissions from closed guard to get used to looking for them.

Agree with Brent,crack head, pump, swim spider web, arm bar. If you can't crackhead you can try deep hook, lock shoulder, toss, to spiderweb, armbar.
If your quick and slippery you can climb around that strong base like a tree, you can cup the elbow and arm drag to back then swim move to spiderweb to armbar.
