UFC 162 Charles Olivera

Cora and I got invited to watch the fight at her coach's house. He's just an assistant coach and a good friend. Anyways, we really enjoy the fights and was talking about how Charles Olivera is a great jiu jitsu guy who keeps on pulling guard but didn't do anything with it. Cora and I was screaming RUBBER Guard the whole time. But of course he didn't know the rubber guard. We were 100% convinced that if he had known about the rubber guard, he won't get hit like that. So we put Cora and his son on the floor and let his son slap Cora while she try to stop his attack with the rubber guard. She went rubber guard to muddy waters..tap out. Would this plan work for Olivera???

I can tell you from experience that securing a solid Rubber guard (Mission control) nullifies all ground and pound as long as you stay tight, keep his posture under control and prevent the slam.

On a related note Roger and all other MMA Jiu Jitsu players should at least watch all of the MTS episodes. Eddie's philosophies on MMA Jiu Jitsu are spot on. Roger had Kennedy's back for nearly 2 minutes and as Eddie states often it is very difficult to finish with the RNC against an experienced MMA fighter. It appeared Roger was trying to transition to another finish when Kennedy escaped but IMO it was too late at that point anyway. Roger also had dozens of opportunities to pull guard and there is no legitimate reason for him to have not done so. One of the world's best grapplers should have had no problem pulling guard and getting the sweep or finish.

My point exactly. I HATE to see a soo called bjj black belt getting pounded because he doesn't use his strong point. If Roger know his stand up suck, why would he want to stand up? And once again, being a black belt, he can't find a way to take the fight to the ground?? Kennedy look like more of a grapller than Roger in this fight. And being 6'5" can't he pump out those jabs more???

It drives me nuts! Plan on screaming at the tv during every UFC... They all suck at jiujitsu. Nobody has a nogi game, especially guard. This is why I smoke alot during the UFC events... In hopes that maybe their rotten, cancerous jiujitsu won't get infect me somehow...

Roger Gracie.... why on earth would you use a body triangle in guard, really bro? If I'm Renzo, Rogers ass is in trouble.. That was so terrible. I threw up in my mouth a little when I saw that.. Yucky.

LOL Scott you crazy!!!! Yeah i'm in the same boat with you man. I'm shouting at the TV all the time now when I see these so called black belt get destroyed in the cage, especially after Joe Rogan tell us all of their credentials. The reason why I pick Charles Olivera for this thread is that, he can be the twin brother of Cora's coach. They build the same, has all the same attributes. I want to so much to teach her coach the rubber guard and its philosophy because I see her coach having so much potential with the system. Especially he is an MMA fighter as well. I have to bite my tongue sometimes when I see him in his matches. This is another reason why I want Cora to excel with the system so that he can see this thing really works, perhaps by seeing her, he will pick it up also. Still hoping......

They aren't 'so-called' black belts though Bruce. They are legit black belts. Just because they don't know RG doesn't make their black belts less legit. I am sure there are a bunch of black belts that don't play or know any de la riva or williams guard but they are still legit black belts. ;)

Most of these guys their camps are built for them by their trainers etc, so like I have heard Eddie say many times, once they have done their striking, strength, conditioning, wrestling etc, its hard to find the time to add a whole new system into your training.
As 10p spreads more the jiu jitsu in MMA will get better, but right now its not really the fighters faults they aren't all using it. IMO the coaches and fighters together should be looking at the new innovative techniques, and deciding from there what's best for the fighters, for their style/body type. Either way, whether it takes another 10 years or more, eventually 10th planet will become a staple in an mma fighters arsenal. :)

They are black belts in BJJ. They are not black belts in a nogi style. they arent black belts in the current sport they are playing (mma). Roger gracie uses a body triangle in guard? he would NEVER do that in bjj. no sport thinks training a similar sport is the best way to train...except bjj. Nobody goes to the batting cages to work on their golf swing.

Sam: I guess with lack of knowledge about this sport, I just assume all the black belts know all this stuff as much time they dedicated to the sport.

Y'know... As great as rubber guard is, that was Frankie Edgar in his guard. The guy knows a thing or two... Also, I would be amazed to learn that Oliveira isn't aware of RG.

If you are saying Frankie Edgar is unsubmitable in any guard then your point is valid. No guard works 100% of the time but RG eliminates GNP and Frankie was basically giving up Free New York.

Being aware of RG and being proficient at RG are two different things.
