Wrestling vs. Judo, Gi vs. No-gi

Imo wrestling dominates the takedowns in MMA, I was trying to think about why? Besides Ronda Rousey, it seems like Judo has really taken a back seat (although I think Ronda also trains Judo w/out the gi?). The main difference between Wrestling and Judo seems to be the gi. Without the gi, wrestling has developed clinches and controls that translate best into MMA. Why wouldn't the same logic apply to jiu jitsu? It seems to me like doing jiu jitsu without the gi would result in techniques that are best for fighting someone without a gi on. Maybe I'm preaching to the choir, but while I'm home for the summer, I train at an academy that only does 1 day a week no-gi. Very smart people still think I'm talking non-sense for saying that no-gi is best for MMA.

This is just what popped into my head but judo isnt as much an American sport as wrestling is. Theres a lot more wrestlers transitioning to MMA than judoka. I mean isnt judo somewhat dying out worldwide?

Could be. Maybe its easier to make a living as a Judoka than a Wrestler since there seems to be a lot more Judo academies than wrestling academies (seems like most wrestling coaches are volunteer or part-time). Maybe there is more of an incentive for wrestlers to transition into MMA. But, with that being said, it is not just wrestlers that have been dominate in MMA. It is really wrestling technique that dominates MMA. Even non-wrestlers seem to be implementing wrestling techniques, but the same doesn't seem to apply to Judo techniques.

The main difference is the shot. Shooting in on an opponent to capture their hips is a long distance weapon. Judo/Greco need a clench to be established first. This is why wrestling dominates takedowns imo. The shot.

I love watching specialists at anything. The best takedown artist from the clench is Jon jones. He doesn't get that much credit for it for some reason, but he dumps people more than Karo did.

Seems like wrestlers with a Greco background are often the most successful in MMA though?

Viviano is absolutely correct. There have been plenty of Judo players in mma, especially in japanese shows like Pride, and overall wrestlers are best at taking dudes down in mma. Judo guys are WAY better at takedowns than every other stylists except wrestling.

There also aren't very many Judo people interested in MMA as a sport. In fact a lot of Judo people even see BJJ as an abomination of their art. There just aren't really very many Judokas doing MMA.

Ok so Judo is still going strong just not so strong in the States. Probably why we hardly ever medal.

I think if people really started training judo no gi, If one brave soul opened up a no gi judo academy, things would be alittle different, You need a shot no doubt about it, but I think theres alot less risk with judo takedowns, the throws are alittle risky because of the sweat factor, but you have less of a chance getting kneed in the dome clinched up working for a trip, Munoz was doing a sick inside trip against boestch. I'm sorry if I sound like an idiot.

I am praying for a no-gi judo school, for no other reason than the creation of a Japanese/Judo version of Renato Laranja
