Intro and a question about becoming an affiliate

Hello all,

Long time creeper of the forum and the MTS videos. Obviously we are all here united under a bunch of commonalities, one of those being a love for JJ and all it's glory. My name is Ryan, and I am a JJ Junkie.

I'm based out of Toronto Ontario Canada. I'm a lifelong martial artist and philosopher, which is another way of saying that I'm regularly broke and must rely on friends' clothes, cars, and my genuine charm to get laid by respectable women.

Moving along, I have been practicing JJ for about a year while continuing my practice in Thai boxing and karate. I studied briefly under an awesome instructor in Toronto. While I enjoyed my time learning from my teacher and fellow students, I found a distinct lack of drilling and open-mindedness towards many of the 10pjj techniques and principles. Let me be clear that I am not smack-talking my teacher in any way. He is one of the best people I've met in the martial arts industry. However, he runs a big program, and can't give special attention to people with special needs like myself.

Soon I will be moving to Northern Ontario where there is less distraction, and more animals, trees and things that make me feel better about life. My fear is that I won't have anyone to roll with.

I digress......I'd like to know if there is anyone in the GTA (greater Toronto area)/Northern Ontario who is down to roll and drill in the 10pjj system.

Beyond that, i'd also like some info as to how I could one day become an affiliate. I know you're all probably thinking, "whoa, slow down boy, you're only a newb." Rightfully so....but I work like a french hooker when I find something I love. If I have to sleep outside of the Tapout Gym in LA to learn from the boss himself, I'll bring a pillow and some nyquil.

I like your style Ryan. Even before you become an affiliate, try creating a hotbox. There's no monetary part on you. We could all help you to start it up. Find some people close to you and get them involved. More people are into jiu Jitsu than you think. Talk soon man.

Thanks SL. Because I am not the brightest human on this organic ball of filth, I can only think of one reference to what a hotbox is, which is probably why I can't think of any others. Could you explain a little more?

I have finally convinced my brother that there is more to life than Muay Thai, so he will start drilling with me. Once we get up north, I'm planning on teaching and drilling what I do know (without creating any bad habits for everyone), and hopefully, as the saying goes, "if you build it, they will come."

hot box is like a gracie garage, just a gathering of ronins, which you are who get together and train. the leader is usually the coach and has to train people for free. its really the first step to affiliation

Chris Herzog helps run the HotBox's so hes a good resource to reach out to. Other than that, you will need a 10th Planet Instructor to sponsor you, you will need to learn/practice the 10th Planet System, and you will need to train with your sponsor. good luck brother. gettin a hotbox going is hard work, and an affiliate even harder, (from what ive seen) im working on gettign a hotbox going too. :)

when you said youre a philosopher, did you mean you've studied it?

If I'm ever in GTA I'll come visit, make sure you make the trip out to Montreal to train with Louis also Herzog shouldn't be that far away either for you to drive.

Check the map to see if any Ronins are close to where you are moving.

Hey Isaac, thank you very much for the good wishes....I'm all for hard work. I have learned from experience that hard work does pay off. One example is University, where I did study Philosophy as well as pre-Law. My main focus was in ethics and classical philosophy. I thought I wanted to be a lawyer at one point.....

While my philosophy degree never conferred on me the powers to get paid to sit at home and think all day, I did take away some very important theoretical concepts that have always stuck with me, and I continue to apply in a practical way every day.

If anyone is down to philsophize with me on any number of issues, please don't hesitate to write or invite me to the party. Philosophy and knowledge is meant to be shared. I love talking about martial arts and it's union with philosophy.

Hey Ryan, thanks brother! I'm going through a lot in terms of changing scenery for myself. But if you ever roll through Ontario, make sure you take the time to roll in Ontario. I'd be more than happy to be a guide for you and your people.

I can't find the map of Ronins in my area. Are you referring to the list of hotboxes and it's respective leaders? So far I can't find anything in North York, except for the guys at openmat, but that's a membership based gym....I'm already paying my last dollar to keep myself in Thai boxing.

awesome, id be keen anytime, ive just started doing a paper in ethics. and bringing philosophy and martial arts together is a dream of mine. im a wee bit too far away for regular visits atm but i plan on going to canada at some time so im keent o catch up :D

Hey Stew, thanks for the reply. Parry Sound is where I'm planning on moving. My brother and I are longtime martial artists. We have seen the need for a training academy in that town. Much of the youth is bored, and getting into trouble. We not only want to offer awesome martial arts combatives and conditioning, but a leadership curriculum that gives these kids a chance at making it out of the small towns in that area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm down to make a trip out to Peterborough once a week from North York. Please DM me with details on how we can get this ball rolling, no pun intended.

I never understood how you could advertise for Ninjutsu. Isn't that s**t supposed to be a secret? lol.....I don't part with my money that easily. But thanks for the heads up AG. I'll make that plan 'Z' (pronounced 'zed', not 'zee').

Is they way we train our secret agents now a secret? Yes and then again not really. Certainly the way we trained them decades ago is now available to know.

I was extremely skeptical about these guys because of the term ninjutsu. Japanese martial arts, like most came from the military. Samurai had a set of fighting techniques that where useful if disarmed (when wearing armor joint manipulation is king) These more or less became jiu jitsu and then was canonized into judo. Soldiers involved in intelligence/special operations (ninjas) also had set of techniques they developed. Some people lump the different ryu they studied into one thing and call it ninjutsu.

They pass the godan test from reputable people (kodokan), they have linage, they have martial artist from fairly high levels of multiple disciplines, one of the founders was fourth dan under the kodokan and was on the israeli olympic judo team. The current headmaster has 5th dan rank under Masaaki Hatsumi. They roll, they use protective gear and actually spar, good for me, idk.

btw they see ninjutsu as a collection of ryu, like i said, in their case;
Koto ryu
Kukishin Ryu
Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū
Gyokko ryu
Fudo Ryu

IDK how much you know about traditional japanese martial arts but you might think its a bit more legit if you look into it. Hard to learn if you think you already know whats up.

I know very little about traditional japanese martial arts. I studied Shorin-ryu for years, and then moved into Thai boxing before taking on the grappling arts. I have a brief understanding of the evolution of the traditional Nippon arts, and do understand that every technique was based mostly out of necessity, and that it is all applicable in various situations.

For me, I'm not interested in disarming anyone with a kitana....that's what guns are for.

However, I cannot claim that I know what's up. i was only kidding. I'm on this forum and site to learn the 10pjj system right now. It's not about lineage for me, only in learning what works and doesn't for me from Eddie's system, and then applying it when I need to.

Regardless, I will take a closer look at your recommendation so that I can come to my own conclusions. At the end of the day, the quality of the people you train with must be greater than the name on the door.

what is it about Canadians, always so reasonable?

Like you said some of the stuff they do is more about maintaining tradition than being applicable today. Also they are well rounded for traditional type martial artist but dont meet they level of specialist in some areas.

Im not suggesting you make them your home gym but if I was going to be in the area, I'd go check them out. But then I like the choking people with chains and cutting throats with shuriken stuff. ;)

No doubt AG. Sorry if you thought I was dissing your recommendation. I'm very easy going, and I make an honest effort not to judge anyone. Like religion, I believe that martial arts is a vehicle that takes you to a level of enlightenment and personal knowledge. No matter your belief system, if it makes you a better person, that's all that matters at the end of the day.

I personally couldn't make the school my home gym simply because of distance. My schedule is jam-packed from morning till night. I allow so much time for travel, with weekends being the exception. But now that you turned me on to the school, I might take a little trip over out of curiosity. Sadly, there isn't enough time in the day for me to visit all of the schools I enjoy, to learn the techniques that each school specializes in......Come on Lotto Max!!
