Before the matches started, the Referee pulled Cora and me over and told us that Cora only have one 9 yr old kid in her bracket. Just the two of them, so she will only have 1 match and get the Belt. But if she wants more matches, she can go into the 11 and 12 yr old bracket. She chose to fight the older kids...:)

Cora was like Houdini in her Final NO Gi match, escaping everything a 12 yr old can throw at her. And she only lost by referee decision in the Gi. Overall she did great, considering it was her choice to move up and fight the older kids. She told me that the older boys are so much stronger. She wasn't able to control them as she control the 10 yr old boys. Definitely will work on that.
Props for going up in age!!!
I really need to stop announcing her tournament entry because all the 10yr old boys don't want to come out and play when they know she is competing. As you can see, all these guys are new and she never gone against them before. All the 10yr didn't even show up to the biggest tournamenof the year.

Looking good! That's all part of Jiu Jitsu, facing stronger opponents. It's a struggle, but you have to take whatever they give you, but I'm sure Cora will reset and it won't be too big of a problem for her in the future! Her matches looked really good and hey, her defense is awesome. So she lost to points, that's ok. I say go for the sub! Forget points.
I've been stressing defense a lot. Whatever is being taught at her gym, I come home and find a defense to it. Defense keep you in the game long enough for you to execute your offense is what I believe. Once she feels comfortable and understand that she can defend any attack, her confidence goes up and she can execute her offense.Quote:

Tori: those are all that she have to push her at the gym. She have 11 and 12 yr old boys that are in the 100 lbs range. They muscle their way through her all day long. She would put up a good fight, but at the end, their power is just too much for her. One of her friend just turn 12 and she is 5'6" and 120 lbs. The kids around her size doesn't put up much of a fight anymore. So she falls in between both groups. Yeah we will need to work on the clench game for sure. Since these 12 yr old boys are so fast and strong, need to put them in quicksand. So what are some of the techniques you use to control these stronger opponents?Quote:

I agree! Cora has done some great things against the 9 and 10yr old boys, but the older ones are tougher. Tell her to trust her Jiu Jitsu, and it'll start paying off against the bigger guys. As long as her technique is very tight and really sharp, she should be able to hold those boys down. She's gotten a taste of what the heavier division is, and I wouldn't be suprised if the next time she went in this division she would walk away with a 1st or 2nd place medal. Thank you master Eddie. We have been focusing on defense because I know more and more she will face these older and stronger boys so we have to be prepare for it until she get strong enough to control them and do any submission. Also this tournament is horrible, started late, very hot, over crowded which translate to Cora not playing her best game. She and I think that she can do a lot better. It just wasn't her day. But yes we will be drilling a lot more escapes and preventative defense.

Yall made the right decision. It does suck not winning when you're used to it, but in a very short time(3years?) everything is going to even out for her and she'll have a proper division. Then it's gonna be like benchin 150 when she's been used to 250. Look at these tournaments as resistance training, stay patient and keep yalls eye on the overall goal. Belts will not be elusive for Cora. Trust that.
I was impressed with her composure in guard and her guard breaking. Def improvements. Double bicep control then tripod or gaining then maintaining posture then stand. Then when you stand it's more like surfing or a handstand than just standing. Positioning and balance. Perfect hand/grip placement with tight elbows will add to her power in many positions. She isn't far off, but cm's make all the difference. I truly believe she can win that division. Just keep doin what you're doin. Which is phenomenal.
Oh and LEG DRAGS. 10,000 of them. Focus on the footwork. Wish I woulda knew this the first year.

Barncat really focuses alot on the leg drag series. Great pass. We drill the shit out of it.
Have you heard of Emily Kwok? She's got some vids out there specifically about beating bigger stronger people (from a woman's perspective). Some solid stuff IMHO. She might be worth a look for you. Here's one example, she's got more out there.

Exactly. Seems simple, but keep doin them. Everyday at least a couple. The move is amazing, but the principle behind it is everywhere and can help you dominate what could of been a scramble. People are gonna start ploppin down on Cora, either to but scoot or pull guard. She just needs to be confident in her stance(like the one Eddie showed), so she doesn't end up in closed guard. Breakin guard is a pain in the ass, so it's better to avoid it. Then get their lower back on the ground get shin control, get to work. It will fail and she will want to try her other passes. Don't. At least for a while. Shove that leg drag down their throats till she masters it. Or they stop pullin guard. This is just my advice and current game as well. I love it.Quote:

Trouble with the m1 is you're feeding them your foot. So it's your base vs their spiral/de la riva. It's a great pass and should also be trained. But shin control hides your feet and allows you to attempt a pass without any opportunity for them to get a guard. If they tie you up, then go for the M series, but attempt leg drag first. Why not, right?

That last Mendes pass is huge. Zguard must be addressed as a separate entity. It is just as effective nogi. Instead of the collar, look for the collar tie. Crucial points: keep your chest and chin pinning their top leg to zero movement. If they can push your face away, they can open their knee destroying your control. Also when you reach for the tie, keep your pinky and elbow attached to the line of their torso(turned inward). This eliminates the kimura threat. Which is huge. If your elbow flares out. They have an easy kimura.
Great pass. Gi or nogi.

The hand gripping the lapel, would goose arm the back of the neck while pinning your elbow to their chest. When this is established, no kimura. Really use your chin and chest to control top leg.
Collar tie is crucial in standup as well. Defending or attacking.
