At what rank do you believe someone should be at for you to be comfortable to take a private lesson from him/her?
I teach white belts all the time
I would say it doesnt matter, if some one has a legit technique that is their identity and hit all the time i would take a private from them.
So youre saying at blue belt youre still getting people to pay for private lessons?
So basically rank isnt important as long as the knowledge is there. I can dig it.
I ask because I have a project in mind and want to see how important rank is to people in general.
He is saying what should the instructor be to take lessons from, honestly if they are solid it shouldn't really matter but from a technical respect and experience factor I would say a purple belt and up would have a lot to offer.
my man JM is sick at armbars, only a blue belt but will up anyones armbar game.
Thank you for clearing that up. I was trying to say that as clear as possible but I can see how it was a little confusing
There are def a lot of guys out there that have an amazing game that haven't gotten the recognition quite yet.
I'd say rank isn't a big factor. Its more about content.
Would any of you take a private lesson from someone that is ranked below you?
im lower than low so..
Sure. If the information was valuable to me. I'm not a big deep half player, but if I wanted to be and saw a blue belt dominating comps with it, I would have no problem catching a private from him. On deep half.
If someone was able to dominate me on the mat I would pay for a private regardless of rank.
I’ve taken a private from Reilly Bodycomb. He has no rank so technically he’s a white belt. That’s where I first learned the foundation of the leg locks that I have double digit taps in competition from. Or you could just take privates from cookie cutter black belts that show you the same old archaic stuff that isn’t adapted for nogi well. Your call. I had to pass dozens of those on my 6 hour drive to train with “white belt” Reilly. I take privates based on a game I like or if its just someone I like and have been training with.
That said, as an afterthought I’d like to add that anyone with a good enough understanding of concepts to even develop a game like that probably deserves to be ranked. But I know a lot of good guys who remain unranked or ranked very low. One is in my gym running classes while I'm away. Scott Ray has given privates before.
Yea I'm with Jon...just a white belt. Lol. But yea, if I saw a two weeker was killing with a sub or even a pass, I'd want to know if even a small detail was different bc usually it's the one small detail that makes something that much tighter or have a higher success rate.
And also, everyone learns and progresses different. You could have someone that has done JJ for 2 years and then a guy can come in and excel 3x as much in 1/2 the time. Wouldn't the two year guy want to learn from that guy? Why not swap technique. I watched a video yday and a black belt said we are all even..equal if you will. Not only was that humble, but true!
We can all learn from each other, no matter our rank. Why does it have to be that a purple and brown belt can't learn from a blue or that white belts are stupid and no one wants to hear what they have to say on technique when they know how to finish a triangle better than some blue belts...Get what I'm saying? :-/
I'm picking up what you're putting down for sure :)
I took privates from Brandon in his blue belt days and really got as much then I as I do now. I also once rolled with his instructor who has no "official" BJJ rank and he destroyed me and taught me a lot. I would say if I didn't know the person I would like them to be purple.
triangles are my ish, I am offering a special 10p rate. 5 dollars gets you an hour of pure leg strangulation techniques. Who's going first :)
..sounds like a trap..hmm
Could be...
depends on the cost, if they're my weight then they better be able to school me. So I guess purple.
Why are you asking? If I could pay my current coaches adequately then Id feel great taking privates with you. :)
for serious it should only be a private in your game, if youre a big long distance half guard player and you kill with that thats really the only thing you should teach, any belt level, thats just an example but im sure you understand, the only thing belt should matter for is price, a purple shouldnt charge more than 60 an hour.
you hear quite often people talk about how they are a white belt in this technique or a purple belt in another. i think whats good to understand is that belts are in all ways just an indicator or a guideline. when i meet a black belt and a white belt im gunna assume that the black belt will be better but the white belts favourite move might be an arm triangle and the black belt might stay away from arm triangles. so i guess i agree with what everyone else says.
as an add on, its also whats available. we dont have anyone above a blue belt over here, so thats that. and honestly they do a great job. one possible difference and this isnt true for everyone, but generally i feel that higher belts will be able to give really little details that just change your game, the liklihood of someone seeing the little details is higher when the belt is higher. :)
I think that it should be a combination of technical skill and experience regardless of rank for example if i was a purple belt and there was a white belt who is also a div 1 wrestling champion and i wanted to improve my takedown game id have no problem taking privates from them
I'm a White Belt. With Zero Stripes.
I taught a seminar 2 days ago in Blossburg, Pennsylvania
It was $20/student.
I had 9 or 10 students come in to learn from me.
Notable students with ranks:
A pro fighter who has a brown belt in BJJ attended.
A black belt in Judo attended.
