Stop grabbing your opponent's head.
I thought he was trying to control the head to land elbows, similar to what GSP does with his can opener. That's the kind of thing the basic armbar is made for. The difference seems to be that GSP respects that armbar and lets go when his opponent changes his hips. I don't believe Henderson thought Pettis could catch him with something that simple. Over confident in his defense, maybe? Either way, it was beautiful.
What Pettis did that most people don't do is to control the angle of Henderson's wrist so that he was attacking the elbow the entire time. You can see him twisting the wrist from inside the lock.
Really basic setup, with really small details that made it work against a guy who NEVER gets submitted. It was awesome.
THE GUARD AIN'T DEAD
dont let someone get high guard with both arms on the mat :) was deff a legit armbar I was suprised not to see him stack and circle more.
Wow right after he got his BJJ Black Belt and right after he got invited to ADCC. Submitted by a striking specialist with a very basic set up to an Armbar. Well this just got awkward...
Yeah.. I threw up in my mouth a little when I saw that.
I didn't think of it as getting caught in a basic armbar, but getting caught in a cleanly executed armbar. Crazy stuff happens at the lowest on through to the highest levels, especially when strikes are involved.
Part of it could have been BH not respecting his game as well. I've learned the hard way, when the stakes are high, you had better respect the other person's game- they may just surprise you.
Still a big BH fan! He ain't going nowhere.
I loved that arm bar setup!
He crossed his feet and still got the armbar - a million BJJ coaches can be wrong!
That was beautiful!
Pettis technique is awesome, on the ground and standing. I hope they do the Pettis vs Aldo fight!
Easy for Bendo to defend. As soon as Pettis opened his guard, he just needed to posture and stand. Watch how long his feet were open before going for the sub. GSP would have been out 7 times.
I was laughing my ass off!! Came out in his Kimono had his shorts with the black belt on em. Hair braided up no toothpick...and got submitted...hey maybe he needed to get humbled like that...thats all jiu jitsu....Pettis owns him now that stain is deep on his soul now LOL!
Ben should have never been so comfortable...to just stay in his guard like that. He didn't try to stack and wriggle his locked shoulder through, or any other escape. I almost felt like he gave up as soon as his shoulder was locked. It was a well executed arm bar, even if he had his feet crossed and waited forever to get a deep hook, his transition was tight. Good for Pettis. I was really hoping Ben would win, but it just wasn't his day. Pettis was his one lost, maybe he had bad jitters. I hate it for him.
There were several options Ben could have taken to escape, but he never should have gotten caught to begin with. He wasn't fighting smart. He is an emotional guy and I think he let his emotions get way to involved in this one.
With that being said, great sub.
Damn i'm glad Pettis won, what an artist !
Perfect timing, just like Vitor/Jones except Pettis closed the deal :)
Pettis got that armbar by destroying Bens spleen. Yikes.
He calls himself the dream now because he has to be alseep to believe in it. He needs to be the nightmare,
Zero fucks were gave when he would like the the nightmare. This identity crisis shit isn't helping. Doesn't help he beat Takonori Gomi by losing to Takonori Gomi. Also missing weight.
What I took away from that armbar was the precise timing of Pettis to control the wrist when Bendo posted on that right arm and feel the exact milli-second when his weight shifted so he could deliver the entire arm to the opposite shoulder and lock it in DEEP. When I saw those legs clamp down, I was like "Oh shit, he's got this, but wait it's Bedno he'll just...wait, no...dang...burn." Expertly executed basic technique with finely honed details(keeping the thumb up to target the elbow). Fear the Guard.
it was a great armbar but WHY didnt benson turn the corner and smash pettis. instead he attempted to turn the corner then stood up, bones jones also stood up to pull his arm out and almost got it broken. kind of a rookie mistake isnt it??
Now I'm thinking he wanted to lose, or was told he had to. More money on a rematch? He could have made it a little less obvious though....
You don't get a rematch for going 0-2 against someone. He just got caught. Slick move by Pettis, perfectly timed, and perfectly executed/adjusted.
Those kicks to the body! OUCH!
