My passing needs some work.
I like to think I'm pretty well rounded within my weight class. If the guys bigger and stronger than me I'm probly gonna pass, because even a lot of my sweeps end me in guard often on good guys.
I always like the sweeps that land in dominant positions. Also, sweeps right into the passes, before he can settle in a guard and or sweeps into subs. Bobby Rivers is right tho, most good grapplers get guard established. Basic pass combo for me is old school knee slice/capoeira pass combo, with he knee slice being my first choice. I love all the 101 pass and its variations. I also like attacking from top half guard, depending on the details of the position, I might opt to NOT pass.. Fundamentals are pass first, but I've gotten comfortable with alot of top half guard subs, one of my more threatening positions. Passing open guard is another whole convo. M-series and bill cooper pass.
Hi Will. Good question. Do whatever it takes is the short answer.
In chess or football, you gotta be able to power through the middle or flank from the sides.
Same goes for Jiu Jitsu. With time, you'll add more weapons to your game, so that you will impose your game, whether it be attacking or countering.
Jean Jacques said it best. "I know the numbers but only you know the combination"
That's a brilliant soundbite that offers a brief yet meaningful answer to a complex question. Another way to explain it is that the decision to look for sweeps or passes to get top position depends on your game, which you will develop over time based on your abilities and your limitations.
For instance, Eddie always pulled half-guard in competition. His reasons for this were based on his strengths and his weaknesses. Pulling half-guard put Eddie in a position where he was confident he could sweep. Eddie only had two years of wrestling, and by his own admission was not really good at it. So pulling guard also had the advantage of not letting more experienced wrestlers get takedown points.
Of course you should always work on your weaknesses but your strategy should acknowledge they exist.
I tend to start off most of my rolls thinking about a sweep therefore my passing is not getting the reps it should. I'm gonna try to mix it up a bit.
Many practitioners claim that breaking and passing the closed guard is the single most hardest task in a jiujitsu match.
i find my passing increases by 25% when i just keeping moving and push the pace until i pass.
You should stay out of people's closed guards any way. There's no such thing as a closed guard pass, where you are supposed to start there, in the closed guard. Plus, you never know what's lurking there. We got a guy in our school and his triangles are nasty, you can protect all you want, but once his guard is closed, you're pretty much done. You want to pass the open guard, it's the only way you for sure have a chance.
Will, I'll be honest with you. I don't try to get top position unless it falls in my lap, I take someone down and end up there, or I'm in bottom mount/half guard and I need to move. I play a bottom game. If I get on top, my game is still almost identical to the bottom. I like stuff I can get from everywhere. I'd say I'm decently even with the sweeps and passes. I've learned a lot of passes in the past two months, but I don't use all of them just yet..so it's 50/50 split.
sweeping
Passing is absolutely my favorite part of grappling, because it is without a doubt the most challenging. It presents a puzzle that can, at times, be very difficult to solve. If I find myself on the mat with someone that has a killer guard, I go back into it over and over, trying to unravel the mystery.
As I've found myself competing against better and better guys, I find that sweeping and passing are the most important parts of what I do and are the things that deserve my attention the most.
You ever watch a grappling match where both guys want a takedown and top position, but nobody is willing to pull guard? Unless you have a significant athletic advantage over your opponent, most of the time it's just a wrestling stallfest...ZZZZZZZ. For the most part, I'll always pull guard and get the sweep. I've become quite good at it. The only way you can up your sweeps is to be willing to sit on your ass. In training, I'll get smashed from time to time. You have to put in the work. Come competition time, I attack aggressively from the guard. If you watch vintage JJ Machado from ADCC, that's what he always does.
I suck at both, but that has been really good for my side control escapes...but having good side control escapes has been bad for my mount and back escapes. :)
Lots of great advice on here. I'd say you are about to get a turbo boost in help when Eddie releases his Scully-esque Warm Ups series video because those will help immensely. Watching and drilling those has reignited my love of passing that has been gone for a little while as I focused on other things. I historically make my students guard pass as a warm up drill (one person is standing, the other sitting or lying down) for a round, then they switch position for the next round. I've noticed that when I keep that in our warmups, their cohesion is better than strictly drilling a straight pass, like knee slice or stacking. YMMV :-)
I don't think the point of being well rounded needs to be reiterated, but pulling guard is popular right now & and I'm all for working your bottom game as well, But you need to learn to pass & put in the reps because your not always going to get the guard pull first & unless you don't mind working from the double guard pull, you'll be in a place where you don't have as many reps as you may need
My passing is garbage, but I got Mo' sweeps than a janitor :)
Half n' half/Plan B is easily my favorite combo.
I like the comments on this thread. On the bottom flower sweep or scissor sweep usually gets used by me. First I will threaten rubber guard and work the flow off that. Then z guard or catch an arm and drag it across and try to take the back. If they can't be broken down I come up and try to push them over I try lots of stuff.
The fighters and younger guys can usually open me up and pass but I will have something waiting for them when they get around my legs. If I am on top I want twister side control then flow to north south and back and go to mount if I can't figure four their leg and attack twister flow I jump into mount and skydive....I don't mind getting tapped but I don't like people grinding their forearm and elbow in my throat and neck just because they are frustrated and getting it handed to them by an old man...I can't afford to get injured in the gym I would cost my literally thousands of dollars to miss work.
whether im better at passing or sweeping depends on if the guy im rolling with is weaker at defending passes or sweeps. Cause im a white belt see. Now going against other white belts and blue belts, i got a couple passes Ive pr acted and a few sweeps, they usually work unless the guy is over 185, not fat then they work a bit less.
When you roll you should have an idea of what you want to accomplish that day. In your home academy you should work your weaknesses. If you are having a hard time passing, make that your focus, soon passing will be a strength and you can work on sweeps. I agree with pulling guard, work wrestling when you can, but get the party started.
Here's my general rule during free roll. If he's up, I sweep or submit. If he's down, I pass. I wrestle during the transitions. By not giving myself a chance to prefer or choose, I am forced to work. I don't think about it and immediately engage trying to establish a control that allows me to attempt what I have drilled.
I start every practice with standup drills. Drags, ties, shucks, shots, trips, and throws.
Exactly! The goal of your classroom rolling should be to improve something. Especially early in your training, you should focus on one or 2 things to improve. After your a little more advanced and well-rounded, like bobby rivers, you can start doing like he mentioned, and start letting your partner choose the areas you work on...
