I lived off this sweep as a white belt but around blue people started to Darce or Guillotine me so I stopped going for it. Now I'm all about deep half or 5.0/ Apollo.

I use it every night
Since moving to a new school that isn't 10th planet savvy, pretty much every time. Lock down, fat whip, oldschool, and a lot of reversals from dogfight. Old school is good money man. And failed oldschool is only a door to 10 other sweeps. :)
How are you avoiding the darce?
A couple ways I avoid it: keeping my shoulder tight to their hip by hugging the far hip tight, my ear to their belly. But that might work because I have a lot of body mass that kind of fills the gaps for me.
If they manage to dig their arm through to attack the darce, I'll just wrap that arm and roll back for a mechanic sweep. Another way to stop strong darcers is to reach up with the arm you'd normally grab the hip with, and grab their far shoulder instead.
Plus there's always just popping up to dogfight. But I always always always start by looking for oldschool. Like I said, a failed oldschool is only a door to other options. :)
I've been working on my dog fight lately...especially when they knee slide to 1/4 guard.. I was probably lazy with my neck and under hook when guys started catching me. I have the same problem now with my Z guard lol
^You know, I've never considered going to dogfight off getting my 1/4 guard passed. I gotta work on that! Thanks man. You inadvertently helped me out a ton!
Something I've figured out (by being choked a lot) is that perfect posture exists in every position, including the bottom. There are a few different things I need to be mindful of when I'm on the attack from bottom Half Guard.
1. Anytime my opponent wraps my neck up, I address it immediately. I don't wait to find out if he has a great choke series. I assume he's a killer and reset.
2. You can have great posture in a few different ways. The easiest is to keep those double underhooks and keep your head glued to your opponent's belly.
3. When you aren't using double underhooks, we use something here called the "light bolt." It's a trick I picked up from Helio Soneca. Basically, you keep your underhooking arm jammed into your opponent's armpit with your thumb turned down. It's a fantastic tool.
4. And always keep good posture! ALWAYS!
everyone should be mastering the boa. all day
can you describe the "lightening bolt" in a little more detail?
I still threaten with old school so I can get a better underhook on the leg for my electric chair
Also, the Mechanic Sweep. Big money.
If you will notice, the way Eddie plays perfects doubles has a light bolt built into it. Top hands stays upside down with the elbow raised. That's the main way I shut the darce down. That, and constantly making them reset base with whips.
I get old school A LOT.
Cant wait to see it!
Yeah, the perfect double underhooks / boa is the bomb. Stay super tight to your opponent and also keep your lower arm glued to your neck and ear. Keep that ridiculously tight and they should struggle getting the arm in for the choke.
I prefer the half and half and the twist back from the dog fight. I don't let go of the boa until I've swept and passed. It's just too powerful to release, I find haha
I'm lost on the boa. What's that? Or which episode of MTS is it in?
Light Bolt changes everything
To be fair I haven't darced anyone from lockdown in ages, but i always look. :-)
To be fair I haven't D'Arced anyone from lockdown in ages, but i always look. :)
More on the light bolt and Boa please. Mkay? thnx.
I am sure that my lockdown was pretty week back when I got caught and the guys that caught me were higher level. I just never got good at the whip up either. But I make up for it by having a killer Apollo. I get this sweep almost every class. Got it tonight. My 5.0 is getting good too.
All day every day. You can use it not only to sweep but to set up other things too. Dip setting works well for me. I use the old school path first then see what happens then work my options from there. If you threaten from old school, they are on the defence due to balance issues, thats what I like to explore. I have so many options from there while they scramble for balance.
I love old school. Works for me regularly and then some
Boa is perfect double undercooks with the lockdown hands connected in an 'S' grip or gable
Frank, this is probably a noob question, but what is dip setting?
I didnt know people didnt know how to use the internet in 2013... Several internet videos of boa;)
I thought Id use that as an opportunity to be a dick. Im done now. My bad.
I prefer to let go of lockdown and grab the ankle instead of high on the hip. If I keep the underhook high, I hit it hard and fast passing immediately. I think you only really get subbed if you let them set it up. Its pretty hard to hit a d'arce on the fly, snatching guillotines is easier which is why you should pass immediately.
Here's a vid of Alder teaching the Middle School Sweep. I use this a lot, too.

If you still find yourself playing a lot of halfguard, It would give you a lot more options if you put old school back into your game. Imo it is one of the most effective sweeps from half. If you try it and still find you are getting caught in darces etc do some positional sparring and see whats going on.
You become hyper sensitive to darce & guillotine attempts after years playing on the inside, but you must walk thru the fire and get caught a hundred times or so. It's just like playing the leg lock game :-) #oldschool4L
Tobyshell,
Dip settting is combination attack. To be precise, you would attack for old school, then when they sprawl in defence to it, you set out to attack with the electric chair as you normally would. As they re base back by posting on both hands you go with it and blast straight up to the dogfight and challenge their base there. Imagine it as a combination in a flow, you go with it and take the path of least resistance. Sometimes, it may even take a few attempts going back and forth until you find a hole and drive into it to get the sweep.
Dip set! It's a great asset to have when you play bottom half if the guy has awesome base and you cant finish off your back.
Finally, I like to think about the Dip set as a PRINCIPLE rather than just a combination I am always putting together combinations to attack with, using any misdirection tactics is the same thing like going from the half and half to Plan B. To me, its dip setting.
I hope that helps.
I helps a lot! Thank you, I appreciate the response.
I get the old school a lot from deep half. Go to koala, try to roll them one way, they post, go the other way with the old school.
