You are the fucking man Phill. That is all.
Well, I'm a lowly white belt so I don't know anything. Do you work on transitioning through half guard-rubber guard-butterfly guard? I play a lot of half guard and when that gets shut down I get stuck. I'm starting to drill transitioning back and forth through all my options so I have a back up plan when something isn't working or gets stuffed. Like I said, I don't know much but I see that as something to consider

Great performance!
Looks like he almost put himself into Muddy Waters there a couple times....
Bad ass job dude! That guy is tough!
I wish you could have broken him down better with your rubber guard. Not necessarily slower, just more powerful, like you said.
Loved how you were super agressive from the closed guard. Wish you could have stayed that way in open guard. I feel like you hesitated a bit there. Stay after him man! Develop that spiral / de la riva / x guard, or just attack those knee bars like crazy.
Keep it up! :)
Thanks you guys, this was actually the 3rd time Nick and I have rolled in comps and the last time he smashed me, so I was happy to get any RG goin on him even though he postured out of it.
Damn man, you were so active in guard I thought the video was sped up lol.
You should've hung onto your sub attempts a little longer. Even if there's nothing there, you can get points and play the NAGA game.
Rubber Guard:
Like you said: More control, use RG as a weapon to smash your opponent, and wear him down.
The same way someone would use top side control or mount to wear down an opponent with consistent pressure and frustration.
Double Bagging will help this process.
Never pull your leg/foot in front of uke's face without owning the overhook on the side of your attacking leg.
That's the only reason he was ever to pass your guard in the 1st place.
Bottom Side Control:
Have go to escapes.
Don't knee shield and accept being passed.
Bridge, shrimp, turtle, and reguard. Do whatever it takes.
Make bottom side control a position you instinctually transition out of.
Work your way to a point that you escape side control within 3 seconds.
Standing:
Be 1st
Especially if you've rolled previously with your opponent and know he has better takedowns than you.
You can at least be 1st. Pull guard. Pull half guard. Avoid being down on points so early in the match.
Half Gaurd:
It was there if you like to play half guard.
You can't rep enough Mini Stomps.
You did great though. Showing up. Competing. Having an exciting match. Setting an excellent pace.
With minor adjustments. You can beat this opponent.
Phil I think you may be able to get to a lower weight div. This guy looked heavy for the division. You could out-tech him or start lifting weights like crazy to match strength for strength. You almost muddied him, and you had a Marcelo in. So you were getting to position, he was just strong. If in the lighter div, you could have easily sealed the deal. Another thing you could do is stand up and engage instead of letting him begin open guard passing on you.
All that being said, I know you got good tech, I've seen it for a while at HQ. I know you can seal the deal. Nice job brotha.
Great match Phil, I was rooting for you to finish it with that rubber guard bro...:) I see you almost had him, but he's pretty strong and power out of it. I think if you would have been able to put your elbow on his collar bone or anywhere close to it, he might not break out of it. What we been doing is totally focusing on getting that elbow dig in deep in that collar bone area and if they are really strong, just let go of hugging the knee for a split second and use that free arm to help totally break him down and then once the elbow is in place, go back to hugging the knee and curling everything tight. Then hold him there until you wear him down a little more. Also what we find with the muddy waters is to put that elbow on their forearm, focus on that spot and it will hurt like hell. You're intention of course is not to hurt the dude, but only to get his mind off of his escape plan or your next step. Not sure how this translate to upper level adult men, but it actually work on the kids...LOL
I think that you did an amazing job in that match... when wrestlers just want to play for points (especially without a gi) its a very tough thing to combat... at no point were you ever in any real danger.
I would recommend more sweep attempts from the guard, Full RG is a great place to hit the Pendulum/Flower Sweep. Also when you go for the hip bump, open up your legs and crab walk into the guy. Also... wrestlers love to get triangled :)
You are a freaking animal and its awesome to see you competing!
Yes Rick! I didnt go for any sweeps and hip bump is my shit! I just got my mind set on RG and I forgot about all the other game I normally play. BLEGH will do better next time.
It's so hard..like I want to say something about crackhead, but it won't be anything too detailed bc you can't see much from behind. Ok, so this is what it seems like happened, you tell me...RG, Crackhead, forearm wasn't tight enough to the collar bone, you tried to pump..went to lock his right shoulder and go for his arm, he postured, but the shoulder lock wasn't secure enough to finish the arm.
If that's what happened this is my 2 cents only bc crackhead & the pit stop is my game. Personally, when he postured I would have locked his left should bc it was already popped out. You were in crackhead, you just needed to tighten your arm down a little more, switch from crack head to double bagger, use the arm your double bagging with to secure the shoulder lock/pit stop on his left shoulder, as he postured up it would have been over..clear the head or stay in the shoulder lock position. Clench is essential. A lot of people when they lock the shoulder push down..or squeeze their legs together, but not both. You gotta do both. Also, cant stress deep hooking enough. Anyways, I hate giving advice. I hope this wasn't annoying to you! Thanks.
1. Cut more weight
2. Make s&e a priority
3. Play the black mamba game to lockdown to electric chair
4. If you want to keep playing open Z guard, do the no hand pass defending drills on a regular basis
5. More patience when playing rubber guard
6. Thank you for putting your ass on the line for your students and the 10th Planet family :-)
Thank you Eddie and everyone for supporting me and giving me your feedback. I really appreciate it. And to be honest, whether I win or lose I always have a blast competing in BJJ. This has been my first year doing all Expert/Advanced level comps and the grapplers I have gotten to roll so far have made all the matches challenging and interesting. The truth is that an opponent who wants to stall shouldn't be able to stall forever and I will continue to work on imposing my submission game. All the 10P guys out there competing and dominating with the system are a constant source of inspiration for me to work and push harder. Thank you all.
Great job Phil. You went up against a wrestler with great posture and that's never an easy day at work.
1. I think your rubber guard would be tighter if you focused on keeping your right arm bent unless you are doing the pump (it looks like you did the pump at :45 but I think your arm was too loose before you started the pump). That helps prevent the stack and brings some extra torque to your leg curl to keep him down. It helps wear his neck down. I find that keeping my elbow pulled in, not letting it flare out, makes my rubber guard stronger.
2. Side control check. When he starts to pass, don't freak out. He has to hold it for three seconds. Meet him with a side control check, forearm to the neck, the other forearm to the hip. Oompah up with that frame and it will help you recover guard.
3. Reverse Dog. This guy's RG defense included leaning in to the side you were attempting to attack. So use Reverse Dog, take the other side. With a guy like this, I'd be thinking Carney all the way if I were using a weak side attack. Also try Double Reverse Dog. Take the weak side, then while your opponent concentrates on that side, switch back to the strong side.
4. I kept thinking you were going for the hip bump sweep, or one of the paths off that. There were multiple times where he had his head leaning into your arm and I wonder why you didn't go for the guillotine?
5. Around the 3:00 mark, you could have upper cut your arm around his head deeper, then clinch your elbow to the side of your ribs and that locks his head in. Sprawl immediately so you have your chest on top of his head and that's a simple guillotine or even bet - Marcellotine. If he pushed you over anyway, keep that elbow tight and Marcellotine all day.
It's rescue dog Scott. Haha! I forget the dumb ass names all the time too, that's what happens when you name every god damn movement :)
[Sheepish grin]
And I don't even know if Double Rescue Dog is an official move but I do I like switching back to my strong side.
