I need MAC tech support bad!!!

I have a macbook pro and every time I upload pics from my iphone they upload to iphoto. My iphoto application is stored on my 1 terrabyte external drive. Now when I connect my iphone to upload pics and videos a window pops up that says my start up disk is almost full and that I need to start deleting files.

I was under the assumption that since my iphoto app is on my external drive my photos were being uploaded directly to my external drive as well which would mean that shit would never be full. It's brand new AND 1 terrbyte, there's no way it can even be 1/10 full. I'm not uploading full length feature films or anything, just little videos and pics.

It seems to me that my iphone pics and videos are still being uploaded to my laptop's drive.

Does anyone know what I can do to make it so that when I upload pics and videos from my iphone they all get directly stored on my external hard drive??

Maybe, disconnect your external and restart and see how much storage is used on your internal. See if that lends a clue.

The other thing is that, although the app is stored on your external, the pics might still be on your internal.

1) Click the mac hd icon.

2) In the left column of that window, click your mouse over the 'picture' option, just once, and then hold down apple key and press 'i'.

In that info window, it should show you exactly how much space is used for the pics, and more importantly where you pictures are stored.

By no means am I an expert. but my suspicion s that, although your app resides 'off campus', your pics are still being stored on your main drive.

From there you can drag and drop your pic folders onto you external and see if that clears up space.

I hope I don't fry your comp, homie. :)

Oh, and if the 'where' says, users/****** (example users/eddiebravo), the pics are most likely still stored on your internal drive.

You can then reconnect your external drive, I suppose by usb or airport, and you'll see its (the externals) icon on your desk top. You can open your photo library folder and then drag them on top of your external and then let go.

After wards, when you have confirmed that they are on your external by checking that folder for the icons that prove they exist there. you have to delete them form the original location to free up space.

I could be wrong about the current location of the pics, but the method I mentioned above should @ least confirm where the pics are located.

Hey just listen to me. Take 1 pound of red potatoes and slice them evenly into small pyramids. Put vegetable oil into a pan and let it get hot on a setting of 7. Put the potatoes that you have sliced into the pan and let them fry for maybe 17 minutes. Now just go into your fridge and grab the pork ribs. Take all the ribs out put them on a plate and smother them with honey bbq sauce. Once you do this heat up a flat pan on medium and place the ribs side by side onto the pan. Let them cook good and flip them when necessary. Its not my recommendation to cook them all the way done. Once they are done put them on the plate with your done potato wedges. Now take a trip to the local food giant. Pick up a big pack of Hawaaaiaiaiaian bread and go home. Put the whole damn pack on the plate. Now pour ketchup everywhere even on your face. Take a glass from the cubbard and place ice cubes into the glass. Now pour some good ole fashioned Milo's sweet tea into the glass. Sit down damn it and enjoy some tv maybe a little bit of internet (but no porn yet!!!) and relax. This is a good time to reflect on life about what you have accomplished and what you want to accomplish. I'm glad to have helped . This has nothing to do with computers but I hope that you will try this method and be as satisfied as I am right now. Peace love and Water turtles :)

How full is the drive on your laptop?

2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

Easy! Open Terminal (Spotlight Search for it)
Copy and paste this into it, changing the path at the end to where you want the Folder to be

defaults write com.apple.iPhoto RootDirectory /path/to/desired/location

coming from a unix background I'd make a symbolic link, but JC's solution is much easier :)

JC, you're giving eddie linux/unix terminal commands. I think thats too much. Maestro, the white belt way would be to....

1. unplug your external drive
2. open iphoto, see if your pictures are there??? if they are there then they are being stored on your internal drive.
3. plug in your external, see if the pics are also there. if they are there also, its storing them on both. if they are on the external
drive just delete the files in iphoto and continue. you'll have to do this everytime your internal drive fills up but by then you can
find a more permanent solution. I'd get in touch with JC and maybe he could give you a list of terminal commands.

Mine is the blue belt version! All Eddie needs to do is open Terminal, copy and paste that in, and change the directory to where he wants the pictures to be :)

To get the directory:
- Go into to the folder you want them in
- On that folder, Hold CMD and press I. It will say "Where": Perhaps if the drive is called "External Drive" it'll say:

Where: External Drive/Pictures/iPhone

That will be what you put after:

defaults write com.apple.iPhoto RootDirectory


SO, it would look like

defaults write com.apple.iPhoto RootDirectory External Drive/Pictures/iPhone

Dayum, it sounds a little complicated but I will attempt this tonight, thank you!

I think I need directions like if you were trying to show your grandmother who doesn't know anything. For example, I'm not sure what this even means... "Go into the folder you want them in" What folder?? .....I know, I know, I'm an idiot when it comes to computers :(

Like...you said that the photo goes from your iPhone to the internal drive (basically), and it just says you have no space? You want to re-direct where the images are placed, even if iPhoto is on the External, so that the images when you upload them go STRAIGHT to the external, where you wouldn't get such error.

So say you want them on your External Drive on a Folder called iPhone Pictures, you'd make a folder on your External Drive called that. Usually your drive comes up on the desktop, right? It usually has a name, like "External 1TB" or something? That's the name of the folder at the start.

So in order:

- Go to "External Drive" on desktop
- Right Click in the window that pops up, and click New Folder
- Name this folder 'iphone pictures"
- Press Cmd + Space together, so Spotlight comes up
- Type in "Terminal", and click the application that comes up called Terminal
- Copy & Paste OR Type In: defaults write com.apple.iPhoto RootDirectory External Drive/iphone pictures
- Press Enter


I hope this fucking works or it's a lot of effort for nada haha!
