Cora's fund raising

Help sponsor/support a youth athlete. Cora Arriya Sek aka "Triangle Queen" has been training super hard to prepare herself for the 2014 Kids Pan Am in Cali this Feb. This event is equivalent to the Olympic for these kids as they travel from all over the world to compete, to test their skills against other high level kids. To help her raise funds for this event, she has collected some of her favorite pictures and put them in a calendar. It is only $15. So for the price of a cup of latte, you can help support one of the hardest working youth athlete. You can easily purchase the calendar via pay pal or simply write a check.

Disclaimer: Just found out from my wife that it cost us $8 to make a calendar. So for Cora to gain anything out of this, we have to raise the price to $15. I hope you all still want one. Its going to be an awesome calendar for you to hang in your kitchen or gym.

My daughter also needs funds. She is 6 months now and her guard retention is virtually non existent. She needs 121s with me multiple times a week in order to bring her guard up to speed. How about this to represent 10thplanet... Cora will be wearing her blue Gi. Her pant legs has the 10thplanet patch just like Master Eddie. So not only that she will be killing with 10thplanet techniques, she will be flying that 10thplanet logo as she rubber guarding...:) 10thplanet invading IBJJF...how cool is that???

Bro you read my mine. I've been playing around with that idea. Cross collar choke from the invisible collar or the ninja choke. I'm trying to find ways for her to use her gi more while she have them in her rubber guard. Or this, with a good over hook, grab the opposite lapel, flying kung fu...choke, if choke doesn't happen... carni is always there. IBJJF is Gi and I'm just trying to incorporate some of 10th technique to fit the event..:)

No, I'm saying rubber guard was devised as a solution to a problem. Lack of a gi collar to control posture.

For example, if she get's the strong over hook and is able to grab the opposite collar, there is a cross collar choke sitting right there. No need to overcomplicate things trying to pull off a flying gogoplata.

Actually she did manage to do a flying gogoplata off a hip bump on me the other day... and I didn't even think of that combo to teach her. She figure it out on her own. I guess this is where we differ bro..on our philosophy. For me its not about winning or losing, not important at all. For me its about entertainment and pushing the envelope just a little harder. For example, people are so used to the regular armbar, they want to see more spice into that armbar. Let say you got mount, then go for the armbar and finish. Ok you won and its effective, but people see that one too many time. Nothing to cheer about. But what if let say you got someone's back, then swim move into spiderweb and finish it there. Now people will remember that. Or you did a pop triangle, ok that works but what is to be remembered by?? But now what if you get that triangle from a rubber guard set up? Now you leave the fans wanting more.

Too often we see too many great fighters that put us to sleep during their fights...ie Mayweather. But we remember Ghatti vs Ward, because they were very entertaining even though they are not even as good as Mayweather. Hope you see my point.. :)

She may entertain a crowd, but the majority of the people watching will be saying: "WTF is she doing pulling rubber guard in a go?!?" It's borderline ridiculous. She goes to a traditional BJJ school, right? Let her use what her professor taught her when the collar is available to her.

I use RG from time to time. I roll almost exclusively in a gi. I don't think it's ridiculous.

I find early on that Cora's grip is not as strong as the boys. So with a weak grip, chokes are not as effective as it should be. But with rubber guard attacks, they are hooks instead of grips.

Wow... Great insight into her grip strength, relative to the boy's.
I agree with you. Why not take advantage of her natural ability to RG, especially since her opponents will be unaccustomed to the approach, when wearing the GI.

You nailed it brother. What I find also is that there are 2 kids in the Houston area that are accustomed to her rubber guard that she competes against regularly. One of whom happen to be her team mate and the other happen to be a boy she always goes against. They are the two she have to struggle to get them in her guard. But with all the other kids, she basically destroyed them in her guard. And not once she even use a Gi choke. She brings to the competition something different than any other kid is use to at their gym. There isn't anyone like her in the Houston area that play a game like her so its hard for them to be prepare for her. However, we been working on her top game a lot and its showing up now. Its a great feeling to have such a bottom game that it really doesn't matter where she is at, she feels comfortable. This Nov will mark our 1st year of 10thplanetJJ. She come so far in such a short time, can't imagine how she will be by the end of next year.

10th Planet's proactive approach is amazing.
Back in the '90's I used to wonder why there was such an emphasis placed on passivity.
At the time, their logic was, "let your opponent gas out, and wait to take what he gives you."

My thinking was, and will always be, your game should be strong enough to take what you want.
That's what Cora is doing with Eddie's system. Amazing indeed.
