I Really Want A 10th Planet Rash Guard, But Would I Be Allowed To Wear It?

I'm sure this question must have been asked before but I don't remember. Eddie once told me enjoy the journey, don't worry about the destination. Words of wisdom for sure, but I have to say I am really looking forward to a slight pit stop at my blue belt destination. After all I have been on my journey there since I was 8. I have always trained at schools that follow IBJJ rules. I can not receive my blue belt until I'm 16 years old. I have been told for a long, long, long, time my blue belt will be waiting for me on my 16th birthday. That will be on March 30th.( After I test for my blue belt of course. I edited this part because I would never think of wearing it prior to belt being awarded ) So back to my question, If I got a blue rashie, is that cool or uncool for me to wear. I mean I know I'm not an official 10th Planet student. But I have been doing the best I can without being connected to an official school for years. I flashed the 10th Planet gang sign after my first win at the Arnold Festival almost 8 long years ago. Is it ok for me to compete with the blue rashie or is that not the thing to do. Looking for honest input. And if the majority rule is uncool don't do that......Damn you Master Eddie for making them so badass looking! :)

Probably a mute point and I just cursed the whole thing by talking about it. Watch me blow out my bad knee, bad shoulder or bad ankle while I'm testing. Lol.

The answer is the belts transfer and Eddie allows you to wear a blue 10p if your a legit blue somewhere else. Your question gets weird with the whole, promised a blue belt thing. I would advise you to wait til your coach ties that blue belt around you, then order the rashie..

Gotta wear the white rashie until you actually get that blue belt. 10pjj is the same 16 years old for blue belt.

No I had no intention of wearing it now. Just planning ahead. Lol. That's why I said I probably cursed it and it would be a non issue because I'll get hurt testing or throw up in the middle of it and not get the blue. I have no set plans of Jiu Jitsu tournaments before than. I have 1 muay thai match in Jan. and 1 mma match in Feb that I'm getting ready for. Do I have to send pics and info about who awarded me the blue belt to Eddie or anyone (when and if it happens. Lol ) to confirm it will be legit belt prior to competing in the rashie?

And I know I shouldn't put so much importance on it but holy crap it's been 8 years. It's so close now I can almost taste it. I can't help but put some thought into it :)

buy it now ( they will go fast) and stuff it in your sock drawer until March. If in fact you do get promoted on your birthday, wear it! :)

Rachael nailed it. That's exactly what I was thinking. Stocking stuffer. Lol. If I do fail or not test they can bury me with it in my pocket after I jump off a building. Lol.

I bought a purple rash guard one before I got my purple. Just never wore it. I just had to put in a batch order so I added a purple in. Not the coolest thing in the world to do but not that bad. Don't want to jinx it.

Just curious, what is the logic behind the 16 yr age limit for Blue? Why is this not at the discretion of the person awarding the belt? If it is due to physical characteristics, my father was a genetic freak who was 6'5" and had to start shaving when he was 13. If it is about the mental aspect surely there are plenty of young people who are more mature than a lot of 20 year olds.

I bought my purple belt shorts when I was a blue belt and had them in my bag until I got promoted. I pretty much changed the minute after I leveled up.

It's basically protection against the kid black belts you'll see in, for example, countless karate classes.

BTW, there are separate ranks for kids bjj, are you ranked at all? Or do you just sport a white belt?

yeah man nothing wrong with buying a blue belt if it is waiting for when you turn 16.....I'm trying to justify why bjj won't give out blue belts to ppl under 16. I understand why bjj has to protect the integrity of the belts, I always laugh when I see a middle school kid with his parents wearing a karate gi with a black belt at the grocery store. But, if you are legit I don't see why it is a problem. That's awesome your already that advanced in bjj at such a young age, just keep training! When you get older and get your black belt, don't forget how rigid and arbitrary the traditional rules seem.

Yes I have a green belt with 4 stripes. I was awarded that when I was 10 and striped up after that. Think I got my last stripe when I was 13 and have been there ever since. I actually have my blue belt in my bag. 9th Degree Red Belt Flavio Behring was at the school last year and he kicked around the idea of awarding me my blue belt ahead of time. He said I was more than ready but it was against IBJJ rules. He than added that he helped write the IBJJ rules and he could do what he wanted. After two long days he decided that the rules were put in for a reason and a year ahead of time was smashing the rules not just breaking them. I was told to keep the belt in my bag and know that it is waiting for me on my birthday. So I have been looking at it for 11 months. Lol.

When it comes to competing it will not really change anything. Because of my size I have always competed up in age brackets. I have been in the expert 16-17 group for a couple years so I face blue belts all the time.

Well that's good! You're progress has been noticed, and your instructor has promoted you to the highest rank a kid can earn.

While there are always exceptions, I think the separate belt systems for kids and adults is ultimately a good thing.

Now it's just being patient for a bit longer. Stay focused on the art, and the belt will come :)

I bought brown belt shorts and a shirt because I didn't know about ranks....don't do that :)

Andrew if you didn't know about belt ranking that means you just like the color brown? Good lord who likes the color brown? Lol

I'm pretty sure the 16 year old limit is more of a CYA thing for competitions. Although there are many genetic freaks that reach man size by the age of 10 the majority will not. At 16 your just about coming into your own and reaching the physical capability of your adult size. Just a thought

And there you have it from coach Zog. The verdict is douche. So I guess I don't get a stocking stuffer to put away until the day of promotion if and when it comes. Lol. That's why I asked. I guess that would raise the question was it douche of him to give me the belt to hold onto and stare at for months. Probably not something I should joke around with a Grand Master about. Hey why did you torture me for a year looking at this thing? Probably would lock me in at white belt for life. Lol.

Mind you, there is no rule against it, its just how personally feel about it.

When I was a White Belt, I kept a Blue Belt sitting beside the sink in my bathroom. I had to look at it every day when I woke up. I'm just brushing my teeth, staring at that Blue Belt. I started each day with that goal on my mind.

When I got promoted to Blue Belt, I came home and put a Purple Belt on the bathroom sink.

When I got promoted to Purple Belt, I came home and put a Brown Belt on the bathroom sink.

Currently, there is a Black Belt on my bathroom sink. :)

I guess if you weren't sure you were going to stick with Jiu Jitsu forever than that makes sense but for example I know for a fact Ill be a black belt some day because I know I wont quit. I may have to wait a long ass time to wear a rashguard if I were to buy one but I know one day I will get to wear it.

Oh I'm 1000% sure I'm a lifer. Maybe I'm just old school, I believe in earning something first, then rewarding myself with recognition after.

WTF, Why would you subject those poor poor belts to what goes on in that bathroom? Belts don't deserve that!

I waited to order stuff till I earned my next rank....it a cool reward to yourself. I like the motivation idea of having it prior too. Just don't be a poser and wear shit you haven't earned.

Poser never entered into my thoughts when I raised the question. Never would I think of wearing a color before it was earned, that would be the topic of a another thread. I may start that one now. Lol

But coach Zog helped me make my mind up. I will hold off for the simple fact it may be bad karma :)

I have to say I don't know that I have ever met someone who was a poser. Most guys that have filtered through where I train seem to have a skill level that matches up with their belt color.

I will say I have seen reverse posing far more often. When I used to hit every tournament big or small I would see guys I had run into at other places stepping down in belt ranking. The most common one was purple belts competing in blue belt divisions. I also ran into tons of guys who I knew to be 18-19 years old entering teen divisions as 17 years old.

Anyone else ever see this and how did you handle it?

I don't know about guys going down in belt rank, but ive seen guys enter the beginner division when they clearly have a wrestling backroung. Just makes it even fun to submit them

they have colours for shorts too? and speaking of shorts when r they going to make new designs? Grey is not the most popular colour...

I agree with this. Not to mention, I think stocking up on blue belt gear while you're still a white belt takes some fun out of getting promoted.

I would put in my vote for 10th planet Vale Tudo shorts. Meathuggers is the only way I roll. :)

lol, true, why a bathroom, that's one of the dirties places in your house. But the idea is a good one.

This kind of reminds me of how I want a pair of the BJ Penn RVCA shorts. Those are probably my favorite shorts of any I've seen, but I just can't bring myself to get a pair. They only make those with the black belt. I wonder who they're selling all these shorts to?
