"non" 10th planet alternatives

everything that i've learned about 10th planet techniques have been from dvds, books and mts episodes. i'll go to class and try it out on my classmates. i've drilled them exactly as instructed, and i get so focused on doing what i've learned that i don't even think about alternative routes.

for example, the other day i was going for an electric chair sweep, but my opponent based out like he was doing a pushup on his arms. i had my lockdown in and was cranking my right shoulder to get his leg over my head. the guy was strong so was he able to hang out in that spot for a bit and my coach saw this and was yelling "technical standup!" so i released my lockdown and did a technical standup while still controlling my opponent's left leg on my right shoulder and was able to sweep him that way.

it never occurred for me to do the technical standup because i've been successful doing what is on the dvd (although i might have to keep whipping back and forth expending a good amount of energy to finally get it.) this is something that i'm gonna keep in my toolbox whenever i'm in that position again.

so my question is, are there alternative counters, sweeps, etc. that you guys do that isn't in the 10th planet dvds/books?

All grappling is a beautiful thing brotha. I relearn basic things like technical stand up all the time. One of the things I harp to all my kids about is backing out. If you can't pass my guard or know you're gonna get caught, simply back out. Reset, try again. There's so many routes it's mind blowing. Sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees I guess. Just keep experimenting brotha! You'll find your go to game :-)

Also, expending a massive amount of energy whipping isn't the answer. Learning whether the pressure is on or off and timing are the keys! I'm still working on these things each and every class.

In answer to your question, You can be very sure everyone here has many techniques they use that arn't in the official 10p books and dvds, and a big reason for this is 10p is one of the most open systems, so the instructors arn't shooting students down for learning and using things outside of what they are teaching them(you would be surprised how many schools the instructors ego cant handle students using techs he didn't teach). That being said, most of us prioritize the moves and paths of the system, because they are so effective among all the other reasons - but never feel limited to them, theres an infinite wealth of grappling knowledge out there. 10p's open mindedness twoards that sort of thing is one of the biggest reasons its growth is so dominant. Other schools arnt sharing information like we are with each other...

We all have our 'paths'... Even if you know 10000 techniques you still have what you find yourself doing more often, and when your in positions you have X amount of things you go to based on Y other variables at the time your in the position.. As you grow, these paths turn from thin branches to thick tree with branches all connecting and touching eachother. Instead of being in one position and knowing 2 things to do from there youll have 5 things to do and know 5 things each of them lead to etc.

Regarding spending too much energy whipping, I also notice sometimes in rolls guys newer to the system, when they get lockdown they forget they can do anything but whip up, so they just sit and battle with it sometimes when the opponent is just doing what it takes to prevent getting maneuvered with it. Don't neglect the stomp series and other half guard techniques they all work well together -- if someones smashing you down when you have them in lockdown so you cant whip them because they are latched on to you, theres usually going to be room for a successful stomp.

I think Dumog, Small Circle Jiu Jitsu, and Paulson's CSW are still big influences on my game, and that one of the best parts of 10th Planet is the way that it plays so well with other styles/systems due to the clear progressions and conceptual flow. There have not been any techniques that I have had to abandon since committing to learning the system, and have even included 10th Planet techniques into my stick grappling when that hits the ground.

We worked sweeps from lockdown two nights last week..worked lockdown all week. It's takes awhile to realize how well it all chains together, how much weight distribution matters, as well as speed and going to the right option bc of muscle memory bc it has to be that fast.
When that guy posted out on his hands, you could of tried whipping the opposite way and going to the old school or mechanic sweep. His weight was in the wrong place from the electric chair sweep. Sweeps are all about where your opponents weight/base are and taking them where their base is not. I never knew this until this week. It's new to me too. But you have to know all of the sweeps well and know when to use them. Hope this helps!

Also, on the using stuff that isn't 10P. We do it all the time at our school, obviously our main focus is 10P, but if the instructor or someone has seen a technique elsewhere and is hitting it on people..eventually it gets taught in class bc we all want to know too!! Cyborg has some really cool things and also the Miyao brothers are a big inspiration right now. I figure if it works, do it.

Your opponent was defending properly, that technique works even for people with limited flexibility. The technique I learned to deal that specific defense is to roll back underneath your opponent and come up to the dogfight. By pushing off the floor to defend the electric chair, your opponent is giving your roll a boost of momentum that might allow you to roll right through them in the dogfight.

But the technical standup is a good idea, I'll try that out.

More to point of your post, there are plenty of "alternative" counters that exist in our schools but don't get included in official publications. For instance, one of my favorite sweeps is a failed arm-in-guillotine butterfly sweep that I use to set up a one-armed guillotine from mount. The sweep itself is well known but the transition to the one-arm guillotine isn't. I teach it and people have incorporated it into their game but it isn't part of Eddie's. I suppose that is really what makes a move become incorporated as an "official" part of 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu - it is a technique that Eddie likes to use or believes that we need to know.

There is no right or wrong way. You have to constantly adapt your style and your combinations. That is what I like about 10th planet. It is forever changing and adapting to different styles and trends.

Look at all the Flack Eddie got for Rubber guard in MMA, but how many guys in the UFC have used rubber guard!!? plenty!!! Even a Twister!!

Put the blast shield down once in a while and learn to feel for the path of least resistance!

I should have made my question more specific. I guess what I was really asking is which alternative routes do you guys do that are your personal favorites?

Nothing wrong with what you did. Got the sweep. Did you get the pass? That's the beauty of lockdown sweeps, when done properly. Sweep+pass.

When a guys is in pushup position, perfect time to swim under his hips to stoner control. If the vaporizer is illegal, then release the lockdown and move to a strong side. I'm gonna look for the armtriangle immediately after releasing. Its usually there. I also love going to dogfight, like Scott explained.
