Dislocated my shoulder rolling last night, should I go to the doctor??

I was battling it out in Dogfight with one of my monster purples, Travis Rivers. I came up with prefect double underhooks and he posted his far leg and whizzered hard and when I went to post my hand to prevent him me smashing me down, I hit a sweaty spot on the mat and slid, which was just enough for my undehooking arm to dislocate. You guys think I should go to the doctor?

I tucked that shit into my waist band and rolled for another 45mins. #realman

Icing, stretching, range of motion exercises and plenty of the sacred plant, I'll be back squeezing heads soon.

Of course I was BSing about going to the Doctor, everything else is true ;)

I dislocated my right shoulder also by sweat-sliding in dogfight about year ago. I have dislocated my left shoulder 20+ times before and learnt that if the shoulder goes back to its right spot by itself, there is no need for doctor. Proper rehab ( ice and range of motion) and exercise are always the best solutions. I hope you heal well and fast! :)

I tore my rotator cuff almost three months ago, I am almost back on the mats but its still a little sketchy in some positions, I thought it had gotten better not longer after it occured because pain had stopped and I went back to rolling to soon, went a little hard it cost me another month at least... All I've wanted for xmas is to be able to hard again, seems close, hopefully by new years its good enough to... Here is the rehab routine I have been doing for anyone coming into shoulder injuries: http://orthoinfo.org/PDFs/Rehab_Shoulder_5.pdf Its meant for a rotator cuff injury but it will surely strengthen the shoulder where it needs to be

Speedy recovery Coach. One of my Blues disloacted his shoulder earlier this year. I put his shoulder back in like a surgeon and he was on the mats two days later after heavy doses of the sacred plant.

I quickly learned that if you come into the gym and whine about any pain you might have, you better have a bone sticking through the skin or you will get mercilessly ripped on.

Seriously walk around with your hand in your back pocket at all times except for when you are rolling. A doctor would tell you not to roll (which you would ignore) and he wouls put your arm in a sling (which would open the joint and cause it to heal loose, leading to chronic dislocations for life) so keep it tucked in your back pocket 24/7 for the next 3 or 4o weeks except when you are (carefully) using it.

I will say, that I wish I had. Damn thing never healed right, and now it's all sorts of messed up. It would at least be beneficial to know what the real damage is. If you have insurance, I'd say you should do it tbh. Even though you're a #man, doesn't mean you have to be a #stupidman. Hope it heals up well for you though.

That's not at all what my doctor did. Although by the time I went to a doctor, a couple years later, the damage had been exacerbated. My doctor actually asked me what I wanted (to continue jits and judo) and tried to tailor my recovery in a way that would be best with that goal in mind. Specifically, he had me doing PT designed to strengthen the muscles in and around my shoulder to increase the stability of the joint.

My issue is a torn glenoid labrum and some minor issues with my bicep tendon, but the tear was the primary reason my shoulder was unstable. The tear allowed my shoulder to slip either partially or all the way out (mostly it would subluxe, meaning it wouldn't pop all the way out. He outlined two possible surgical approaches, one in which he goes in and cuts away the torn tissue, pinning it back down where possible, and the other where they would first cut away the tissue and repair it as much as possible, but then they would cut the sack which surrounds the shoulder, and pull it down and stitch it back together so the whole joint would be tighter.

The second option would cause a permanent decrease in shoulder flexibility.

Anyway, I chose (so far) to not have the surgery, I went through the PT. I was happy with the approach. I was happy that the surgeon did not A) tell me to stop rolling, or B) try to sell me on surgery (other than to explain the potential options). The PT folks, I thought, did a good job as well. Those bastards. lmao.

So what I'm saying is, there are good doctors out there. Shop around until you find one that actually gives a fuck. Ask other people who've had experience with surgeons/doctors/whatever until you find someone who you're comfortable with. (@kurzy)

AKRhino, I have a number of threads in which I talk about my shoulder and my successful rehabilitation through Jiu Jitsu and conditioning training. I know what you're saying. I was scheduled for surgery and after 6 month of Jitz my shoulder had never felt so good and strong.
My doctor said if it's not coming out, avoid surgery at all costs, only use it as a last resort for a shoulder that refuses to stay in the socket.
It has come out a couple times since I started its a year and a half ago, but it is seriously 95% better than it has been in 20 years.

Zog is already an elite JJ player, so JJ isn't going to rehab his shoulder, bot conditioning and other specific exercises can strengthen it. He'll know what to do, but that tip about keeping your hand in your back pocket is a golden secret I learned from my own JJ instructor, unfortunately I learned it too late.
