People with Disability

Hey guys, My name is Jesse. I wanted to ask if there are other people that are apart of the 10th Planet has a disability. I was born with no hearing in my left ear and partial hearing in my right due to my umbilical cord being wrapped around my throat. But they did not find out until I was 5 years old. The reason why I am posting this is to find out if there other people with disability that is part of 10th Planet and what challenges you had to overcome or currently face. This is for anybody that has any type of disability. If you happen to have none but yet have a hard challenge to overcome. You can post that here and see what other people say that might help you finally overcome it. If you are not comfortable with posting your disability but want to post your experience. You can leave your disability out of the post. The challenges I have at the moment is when I am at the competition and if Brandon is there or somebody with a lot of experience is coaching. I have to take out my hearing aid so that it don't get damage and keeps getting slammed into the side of my head. So I lose the advantage of hearing Brandon or a coach. It is kinda hard to concentrate on my opponent and having to look at them to see their advice on what to do. After the round is over, is when if there is anything I did not understand is when they show what they wanted me to do or give advice for the next time something like that happens. The only thing I have to my advantage is to train as much as possible and keep rolling with the guys or ladies sometimes. Now for the non-disability challenge is the "fear". The fear of making the first move because I am afraid of maybe being caught into something I might not get out of is back again. It went away after Lonnie's Competition psychology course as part of the 3 Day seminar about 3 months back and I don't know if it is because the 1 year death of my grandmother that I had to take care of due to dementia and weak legs who I also was in the room when she gave her last two breath on Christmas Eve which was little over two weeks ago might have reset my emotions back to that time or something. But I am going to have to work through this fear once again. I can't wait to hear other people reply's to this thread and see what people has to say.

Good stuff Jesse. Keep your head up buddy. You got through the fear once already, you can do it again. Keep working hard and lean on your team mates.

Occasionally I'll lose a little position because I'm focusing so hard on either not ripping a mega fart, or shitting myself. I just consider it extra punishment for whatever it is I ate. If you haven't already, check out matt hammil, you could probably get some tips from him on how he adjusts for his lack of hearing.

You are def not alone homie. I have PTSD, permanent muscle and nerve damage in my lower back and entire left leg which messes up my gait and that in turn messes up my knees. According to the docs I'll be looking at total knee replacements by the time I'm 45. I tore and had to have surgery on both knees in 2013. Currently my challenge is just being able to get back to the mats.

True Champions become familiar with failure so they so the no longer fear it, so when faced with it they move forward regardless.

There is a good friend of mine, I suggest you look him up. His name is Matt Betzold. One of the greatest grapplers and Mma fighters of today. He has 1 leg. Terribly inspirational guy, will make you feel like the biggest loser. Outwork you, so positive the whole time. Amazingly talented, it's hard to be 4 weight classes above a 1 legged guy and have him mop the mats with you face every day. You think that leg is a disadvantage til you roll with him. He'll sweep you with it and choke you with it. He's got a more skilled stump than I have legs. His logo is ¿Stumped? Lol. Awesome guy.

I'm neutral toward American top team. But one thing great they have there is an all blind grappling class. Liborio's daughter was born blind, so he was inspired to start a blind class. Now blind folk travel from far to learn martial arts there.

Long and short: your not alone. Be positive and dominate the competition!

I have one messed up hand, not as bad a Jean Jacques. Never noticed it affecting anything though (except classical guitar), its not pretty looking but it works well for everything fight related. Not sure if it counts as a disability?

One of my very best friends was born with one arm missing from just below the elbow down. He took 3rd in the state of California in wrestling one year.

Brandon Ryan from 10p Omaha has cerebral palsy. He's a trooper/soldier, a true inspiration, he even wrote a book about it "The Emotional Struggle".

I am happy be there man even when my mom nag to me about why I should not because I can get hurt. So it is a good thing I can turn off my hearing aid and not have to hear it which then will piss her off that I did said action and I can read her lips on what she is saying.

Thanks for words man. I am considering maybe doing a deep meditation and see if I can face the fear inside my mind and conquer it. So I gotta get my meditation music ready and remember the mediation I say to myself to help me go deep. I did one time and it was weeeeeiiiiirrd. :confused: Like there was a demon who was a representation of the guy I wanted to beat the crap out of from work that disrespected me and martial arts from day one. So I spent most of my time beating the crap out of the said demon. So I would like to see how it goes when I do it again.

DUDE TMI MAN. Maybe that means you need to change your eating habit. This is how I usually eat before the competition. I usually eat less anyway to help maintain my weight but I never eat anything the night before and the morning of to reduce the chance of having that happen at a competition. I looked up matt hammil and there was an interview about how he gets ready for an mma fight. and it was coming up with a plan before the fight with research done on the person he is fighting against. That is where the lies for me is I don't who might be competing at the Grappling tourny and that kinda does not work. Only with practice would I think I will be able to win rounds and stop being so tight in my guard as Brandon said and be more flexible with that.

I feel ya man. I read about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder when I was in Psychology 101. It opened my eyes to what soldiers has to go through a lot of times when they come home from a war, I remember it said that even people gotten when the terrorist attacked on september 11 2001. Good luck with your challenge man, take it easy and don't do anything that will make you stay off the mat. TTT man.

So true herzog. That is how I feel. I don't care how many times I lose or win, I will only keep going no matter what. The only thing I feel like my fear is holding me back from realizing my true potential that I know I am capable of.

What the freak man! Thank you for telling me about Matt Betzold, I have never heard of him, so I googled him and saw videos and wow. It would be awesome to grapple with him sometime in the future. and the Logo stumped is hilarious the fact he is making fun of himself tells things about his self confidence of himself. I did not know there is an blind grappling class. That is awesome.

If you have any difficulty with anything man You can post that here. I am kinda jealous that you know how to play an guitar because I always wanted to learn how to use an instrument. The only thing I kinda know is my vocals from chorus but that was a long time ago. That is awesome of your best friend to take 3rd place. I hope he goes further.

Thanks for telling me Eddie. I love reading books on peoples experience and their point of view on life that makes me think wow. I never viewed life in that way.

I love how thorough Jesse is. Each one of us got our own reply. Very cool. Setting the standard for politeness. Very cool

In 2009 I suffered a stroke my left side was partially paralyzed , was also affected my vision which I saw with my left double too. so I was really super scared to train let alone grappling . eventually ended up with a psychologist that I followed . cognitive therapy It helped me in such a way by actually thinking " what's the worst thing that could happen " okay a loss what else . anyway to continue with training and competitions , you wil learn to create your own way to hear or to see , that 's your instinct .
They never knew the cause of my stroke until 2011 when i got back from grappling i was always black and blue so to the hospital turned out I had leukemia ..... amazingly is in remission and occasionally I need chemotherapy . but i can handle that.
And now I eat sleep and watch jiu jitsu , but I do not practice it .... I 'm afraid , I'm fucking affraid i go to practice and sit on the bench and observe. Again I have therapy and I hope i'll be setting my first step on te mat .

Wow, I can understand the fear coming from due to what you went through. At least you did not give up jiu jitsu all together. That tells me you love it to the point that you won't leave it. I am glad they found out about your leukemia and that you are in remission. I hope that when you eventually get back to the mat that you take it slow. Since you had a stroke, that means your body is not going to respond as it normally would do. So that means your body as to accommodate so don't you dare get discouraged and keep on going. And to let you know, your fear just made my fear look small compared to yours. In fact it is so small that you need an electron microscope.

I have narcolepsy myself. I don't think it has hindered my training at all, although I think jiu-jitsu definitely helps my narcolepsy. It is the best investment in my health - physically, psychologically, and spiritually - that I have ever made.

I once rolled with Nick Newell, the one-armed MMA fighter with a 10-0 record. While trying to pass my guard Nick used his nub, which was extremely hard, and he apologized because he felt it was advantage. I told him not to worry about it because I intended to use both of my arms, which I felt was a bigger advantage. He eventually heel-hooked me. Fortunately, it only sprained my ankle. Nick felt horrible but I told him that I deserved it because I underestimated him because of his disability - I didn't think he could finish it with one arm and a nub so I let it go too far.

So I was teaching class one day last year, and I had a young man walk in from the mall and sat down at the edge of the mat and watched with pure amazement in his eyes. He sat there the whole rest of the class, and when I finished, approached me and asked if he could do this too? I told him, "why yes, anyone can do Jiu Jitsu! He lit up and went over to what I thought was his mother, then she came up to me and said " this is Bradley Thomas he is severely autistic and we bring him to the mall for therapy, he has never acted like this before, would you mind if he came in for your classes? He might not participate fully, but if he could sit at the edge of the mat and take in all of the stimuli would be terrific!" I said absolutely! Well he showed up for my very next class, and was there every class after that, well all the way up to my divorce, and me leaving training for a little while... He showed up every day with this huge smile, and trained with everyone just like anyone else! Had his therapist not told me about the Autism, I would have never known! That's the power of Jiu Jitsu! Bradley was an outstanding student, one that I still miss to this day, well I miss all of my students... I consider them more close friends than students But Bradley always stood out. It made me feel like I had made a definite positive impact on his life, with out expecting anything in return. I think that is when doing something matters, when you do it for someone who can do nothing for you in return. But it did do something in return, it made my soul smile! It made me believe in myself even more! So I just wanted to give a huge shout out to one of the toughest dudes I ever had the pleasure of training, Bradley Thomas! Thank you for inspiring me! and touching my soul! Thank you for being you! Keep training hard!

Tomorrow evening, I am introducing Bradley to Jay Watkins, so he will continue his therapy and Journey at the Indianapolis Moon where he started ;)

I just met a dude named Brian (@wheelchairjitsu) on Twitter who trains BJJ from a wheelchair. His 8 year old daughter got him into training so they could hang out more. Ridiculously inspirational, as is this thread.
