Has anyone checked it out besides me? I don't quite understand this guys history, but some of his stuff looks pretty legit. He also speaks a lot about Rubber Guard and his particular take on it. Just curious to hear thoughts.

He bases a lot of stuff off Catch Wrestling and is black belt in Judo under Gokor/Gene Lebell. He has a very unique approach to triangles and rubber guard spins are effective in certain areas but I like Eddie's take more of course, they go well with 10th Planet because both systems emphasize a clinch base. He has some crafty arm-triangle and triangle set ups which I want to look more into. :)
i got it day one. i really like his layout and theory.
i'm a really big fan of k-control and i'm surprised it hasn't caught on (which i'm happy about since nobody knows what i'm doing) but i've been pretty happy with his take on other positions on the bottom as well.
while a lot of what he is doing works well considering he is used to being larger and longer than his opponents, i think his triangle finishing and the sankaku triangle finish is useful for people of any size.
The only book I can find is Mastering Triangle Chokes. Is that what you guys are talking about?
I didnt realize his book had been released. Sounded like it was getting the ARG treatment
What does he say about rubber guard?
And post pics of this k-control please :-)
Joe haven't heard a thing.
I agree with you. his approach reminds of eddie's a bit, very technical and highly offensive off his back. i have been playing around with k-control for over a year and i totally agree; when the opponent beats your posture control and hips in, i switch to k-control and try to break him back down. ive never been hit substantially from there and i can usually get back into mission control if not new york from there.
And Eddie, he comments on it a few times throughout some of his videos. He has one variation of guard control that he calls the "Irish Collar" which is similar to one of your techniques to break someones posture, but he doesn't switch to mission control. Here is a video of it.

In that video and, if i recall correctly, another video, he talks about what he feels being a problem with the rubber guard in that it allows people to "back out." When they back out, they have a great ability to come forward to throw a bomb from inside your guard. I have personally never had any issue with someone "backing out" of my rubber guard, but I have normal length in my legs with a lot of flexibility while Melanson has extra long legs - i think hes around 6'5 or so. He does comment on how the best RG players (he cites Bollinger specifically) don't let the "back out" happen b/c they are so quick in transition, however.
Sweetenlow coming in with some strong posts. I like it
ha. thanks brent. i am very new to forums so I am trying to figure it out whats good
Thats an interesting position though. I play something similiar from the DLR position. Kinda looks like Im playing a sloppy DLR because I dont put the DLR hook in. Im gonna have to try this from full guard
Brent, I'd be interested in seeing that. My DLR is nonexistent.
Since this book release, I have youtubed some of Melanson's practices that he (and sometimes Frank Trigg) is running at Extreme Couture and he definitely looks very knowledgeable with some interesting live drills. With that, Robert Drysdale stated that all the top Pro's in Vegas train with him for grappling - one of the reasons I am curious about the whole deal.
Melanson's legit. He's got a black belt in judo (he's been in Karo Parysan's corner many times), extensive knowledge in catch, and a black belt in BJJ. I don't recall who awarded him his rank in BJJ, but Randy Couture hired him on as the head grappling coach at Extreme Couture, so it's safe to assume that he's credible. Forrest Griffin trains with both Melanson and Drysdale (I assume for a good reason, otherwise he'd just do all of his grappling at Drysdale's).
I gotta see this guard in live action to really dissect it. It's hard to tell how legit it is. Who knows, it could be a great addition to the RG, but I can't really tell
Sweetnlow, thanks for joining. I hope you stick around.
I wanna try k control out. I use the entry into the flower sweep as a guard style after watching video of vinny magalhaes. K control is basically that plus a little z guard/knee shield. I like it.
Eddie, I have never seen live footage either, but from experience i've had some success avoiding bombs inside the guard. If you go to 5:55 and watch for a bit in the video below, Melanson will demonstrate so his K-control stuff.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on it, particularly how you bring the opponent back into the RG. That's where I have been experimenting the most.
the omoplata is there all day especially if you're good at working for other attacks as a distraction.
ok gents, 6:15 of this video is where talks his thoughts on the rubber guard. if you watch only a few minutes before, he goes over his variation of "London" or his "shoulder pin" and why he likes it.

The Irish collar tie he uses is similar in theory to the rubber guard. He keeps his opponent broken down and really close so they can't punch him. He is kind of using a legless rubber guard to keep his opponents close. He also uses London a lot to set up triangles. It seems like he understands grappling (especially from the guard) for mma really well. His theory is either be in really close (with the Irish collar tie) or be far away (k-guard) so your opponent doesn't have an opportunity to punch you.
Here is a video of his Irish collar tie

Lots of peeps on the Atama forum are bashing him but at least he's specifically trying to figure out the best guard for Mma. I just need to see him sparring against dudes his size with some decent skill before I bother dissecting it. This dude is giant so a lot of his material may only work on smaller guys, again, we don't know until we see sparring or comp footage :)
Ive never gotten used to the 3 finger grip
I'm having a hard time understanding this. Not in the sense that I don't think it's effective, I just don't have a black belt in judo or know catch wrestling so it's hard to understand how he's playing it with my (very) limited jiujitsu background.. So how's he preventing the opponent from sprawling back and using his right arm to smash his legs to the mat and swiveling around to twister side/side control?
I think I read somewhere he has a really rare disease that caused him to go blind. He had surgery and they were able to give him something like 75 percent of his sight back in his right eye. But I think the doctor told him that he can't grapple anymore cause if he gets bumped wrong he might go blind again. So I don't think your going to see him training or competing. I think it also said in the article that he had to have like 3 of his toes amputated. Really sad... Couldn't imagine not being able to do something I love.
Ive read similar things about him and that he cant roll much. He speaks about how he got his black belt in Hayastan Grappling from Gokor and Karo. He definitely has negativity surrounding him. Again, one of the main reasons for the post.
@chronic_jiujitsu - you would be surprised how much of effective hitting is taken away by it, but then again Ive never used it against somebody like jon jones. In my experience, as soon as the guy tries to transition from there, I almost always can lock up Mission Control or get a Free New York.
Zog, he states he has a black belt in "Hayastan Grappling." So no jitz ranking, but definitely a worthy school in my opinion.
Impossible to develop a legit guard system if you can't roll
CTR
Hmmmm...
Reading the reviews on this book alone makes me want to pick it up.
I got it in the mail today. Will report.
Randy Couture has a lot of good things to say about Melanson and his system. He wrote an intro.
Neil Melanson wrote another intro, and reading the intro, Melanson said that he did nothing but triangle attacks from guard for X-amount of time, at the behest of one of his instructors.
He says he has figured out all sorts of ways/tricks to get the triangle sub, against opponents who knew he was only working for the triangle at all times, so they knew what to watch for, etc. He had to develop ways to catch it depending on how they acted in his guard.
Looking forward to checking this out in detail actually!
Well if he can't roll or compete then surely he has footage of his students pulling off his techs in competition right? Links?
Btw I hope he has some super legit material, I'm not hating, but I am a little skeptical
Hey Eddie, I am not saying he has developed some amazing system or anything. I just cracked the book open and just started into it. The entire book is about nailing triangles from guard.
All the MMA fighters that train at Xtreme Couture are being taught this system according to Randy, but I don't know who any of them are becasue I don't follow the sport to be honest.
I just bought it to see if it would help me tighten up my triangle game.
Any updates on this book?
