Friend of mine posted this link on his facebook page; worthwhile read. It provides many answers to the cartwheel pass that led Eddie to remove it from the system.

Although flexibility is something we should strive for, not all people have the luxury of playing the rubber guard. This provides the clinch style offensive guard that the 10th planet system strives for without the heavy emphasis on flexibility.

I actually came on here to post it because i know it fits in well with the 10th planet system, (Chill Dog, NY etc)
except im not a paying member here so i cant start threads! Please dont take offence to me refering to it as Williams Guard its just im a Humaita guy, so i'd probably get murdered in my gym for using 10th planet terms! jk :D different systems but its all jiu jitsu

Lister grip works well for me. Not something I play a lot but I give it a whirl every once in a while. You better have a wicked flying kung fu though!

Have you seen radical mma's rat guard videos on youtube? the instructor always plugs 10th planet and that stuff would flow pretty nicely too, chris carioso used it into the ufc and chained it into a 100% sweep.

i havnt played with it yet but what im thinking initally is, how well do you think it would work if used more like a prison guard/ crackhead control idea. use the free leg to close the guard, and (i ahvnt tried yet) but maybe that controls them enough for a omaplata entry etc.
my other thought is playing williams guard more like mixing half guard and a carni together. use your free leg in between theirs to block the pinwheel pass and go for shit there like a flying new york from half guard etc.

Dean Lister used the Leg hook, with elbow strikes to finish sakara with a triangle at UFC 60 you can see him teaching the same technique in the gifs when the opponent grabs your leg. he also used it to hit an omoplata on Okami but it was escaped. dean also uses it often in comps.

both Estima's use it often, notable examples are joao assis vs victor estima at adcc 2011, where victor uses it to get an omoplata which he sweeps with. Braulio uses it to lock an omoplata on James Brasco at adcc 2009, which james escapes.
this style of guard has also been used in competition by nino schembri, Guilherme Mendes, clark gracie, kyra gracie, rodger gracie and shawn williams. im sure there is more too!

Chris Holdsworth uses it a lot too, it's his go to guard. I doubt I will ever go back to London, I used to play it ALOT, but I would WAY rather see UFC fighters playing it than what most of them are playing now.

thumbs up. I like williams guard for what it's worth.
i like mounted williams guard, when im going for a mounted gogoplata. once i get the overhook and head control ill post up on my leg and get into mounted williams guard and hook my hand in their armpit, then follow through with B macs mono series except ill generally go gogo first and then mono. :)
I'm still working on flexibility, but i don't have the luxury of it right now. I have been working the london guard since it still provides a clinch guard. I love it alot, only thing is you have to shoot the angle quick before you get pinned flat on your back.
What is the effectiveness of the belly down sweep to reverse the cartwheel pass? It looks loose, but if it could be proven to work in high percentage I would use it as bait if nothing else. Learns me please
