Who cares? Thats their coach, those are his rules. Urijah doesn't seem to care.
I agree, who cares as long as faber is happy, but at the same time thats kind of nuts! Haha
To me jiu jitsu is jiu jitsu no matter what garment you wear. I dont see how wearing a traditional japanise garment makes it legit or not, but to each his own.
I agree with what prado says about promoting guys via the internet. Seems like marketing tactics and easy ways to promote their brand to me, but again, to each his own. :)
Score how, according to IBJJF rules? I hope that is not what he's saying, but whatever.Quote:
"Some Checkmat guys are giving belts too quickly," he said. "If you ask those guys, Cormier won’t know how to score a jiu-jitsu fight. How are you going to promote a guy this way?
I like it, Gi BJJ is a different animal than MMA or even No Gi Jiu Jitsu, wearing a black belt in the Gi and not knowing collar chokes, grips, etc...isnt right IMO
Not saying Uriah doesn't know those, looks like he has trained in the Gi, but his coach feels he isn't a black belt yet in the Gi which is fine
Prado does seminars at a school near mine, that guy is a turd for sure. He is right about it getting watered down and all, but still very closed minded.
Also, I wonder why it is, that he hasn't been training in the GI since he had all those fights last year? Doesn't training GI help your jiu jitsu in mma?
I like it seems lots of mma guys just get handed black belts way to easy. I like that his coach has super high expectations of a black belt this is the way it should be, appears that many martial arts schools of all types just hand out black belt to make themselves appear badass.
I think this keeps the integrity of the rankings. He may be able to hang with black belts but if thats what his coach decides then good for him. Its not like Faber is competing in Jiu Jitsu competitions anyways.
Fabio was very cool when Team Alpha Male was training at our gym. Very approachable and great at breaking down our games and structuring gameplans for Urijah. There was such a radical difference from the first couple times I rolled with Urijah then the last couple times.
I'm just a white belt, but would you guys liken a black belt in gi bjj to a person with a phd? They are an expert in that particular field, and they are able to teach it at a university level.
If you don't know how to do a collar choke as a black belt, that would be like a math professor not knowing geometry
ill go up there and give him a blackbelt.. these idiots forget what bjj was made for in the first place..on that note is it cool if i start doing gi and compete in the blue belt div? i was a blue in the gi...
Doesnt Eddie follow a similar line of thought Einstein? If you're a black in the gi, you transfer over as a brown in 10P and don't get your black in 10P until you knoe the system.
Fabio is doing the same thing but with knowing the gi.
does faber have a black belt in any no gi jiu jitsu? i think if you dont give him a black belt in gi becuase he hasnt trained gi in ages fair enough, but the guy is legit on the ground no gi and i think he also needs to get recognition for it. then again i dont know what holes he ahs in his jits so i cant say.
i just think belts are only to give an idea. keenan cornelius for example was kicking arse at brown belt in a way that few black belts could match. the belt gives a rough idea of where someone is but meh i dunno, doesnt seem to be a big deal. gi and no gi are so different i dont think it makes a big difference if he doesnt get his black belt in gi
His coach doesn't give nogi belts. He made that pretty clear in the article lol.
Team alpha male definitely doesn't care about belts, they mock the belt system pretty hard with their joe jitsu belts
I respect that coach for taking his job seriously. You can tell BJJ is important to him, and he wants it done the right way. Too many people give away belts.
