Berimbolo

In Texas what Cora fear most was those wrestlers. But we found a way and she over come those fear. So now that we are in California, I took her to train at A Team Jiu Jitsu this evening and I notice that Cora has hit another obstacle. The dreaded BERIMBOLO. Does every high level boys play that game here in California?? It seem like it to me. So my question is, if you were to fight Mendes bro or the Miyao, what kind of game would you play to make sure they don't get to their berimbolo game?? (not sure how else to rephrase that question). What 10thplanet game plan would you use to start the fight?

Pressure. the berimbolo requires a spacey type game like played in gi. Pressure pressure.

i just think she needs to let her opponent sit down and then develop specific defence/offence to the DLR and RDLR games.

i could lie to you and say it is easy or quick to develop but it is something that takes time and lots of exposure to people who use DLR and berimbolos effectively.

it is akin to the best way of knowing how to defend the rg and other 10th planet techs requires training at a 10th planet school. i think slick rick developed the 'rubber stamp' because he voluntarily spent a lot of time inside opponents' rg.

this could be a good opportunity for her to advance her footwork and top game

So you were looking for a specific move? we are such a leglocking gym that id suggest that to her, but in kids division they are almost always illegial. Lets see...If you can get your shoulder in place in time doing a capoeira pass, it will stop a berimbolo in its tracks. That's a 10p move Cora knows.. Umm, you can do a twister roll there too I believe, but that's tough. I attack the legs on almost all inverted games.. :(

Also. I know I'm gonna sound like a meat-head when I say this. But here goes. So when they cup her ankle and look at inverting, just pull your leg out. There is a correct way of doing this though (Plenty of wrestling videos on how to do this). If in the gi, that's not possible, but a berimbolo nogi is kinda flawed, no sleeve, no belt, no pants leg. The control is where it is inferior to the gi version. Exploit that weakness. If not just heel hook their asses, Cora! Lol.

I haven't encountered any berimbolo players yet so I don't know. But I do remember Eddie saying the best way to deal with inverters is using under passes. So basically from what I understand, avoid standing passes against DLR/RDLR/Berimbolo, avoid trying to pass over the legs, go low and use under passes to disrupt their game.

Again, I've never had to deal with it, but that's what Eddie said a while back in a MTS episode when discussing how Rader was able to kill Samuel Braga's inverted attacks. Samuel Braga is a DLR/RDLR/Berimbolo player. Look up his match with Justin Rader. Maybe you'll find some tips?

She needs to be exposed to the bolo and a strong DLR and spiral game. There are counters to the berimbolo just like anything else, but it takes a ton of practice. The berimbolo no GI is just as deadly as it is in the GI. In the coming years more people will be using it. I, personally, use it a ton. Even on the best guys I play with, I have hit it before.

Good advice here. He tried to go over joao's guard in adcc and was getting slung all over the place.

I've been using this defense recently (still waiting for name change by mod so sorry for the non-real name sn)

Edit: I'd also check out what Leandro Lo does w/ De La Riva Guard Passing, BJJ Scout has videos on it. Another thing I've been doing since I've seen the video a while back. Most of the matches he uses to show his defense are in the Gi for the most part, so that should help her Gi berimbolo defense.

this is a totally legit counter, i have used it a couple of times.

that said, i think you're going to encounter lots of problems if you let your opponent get that far in to spinning. lo doesn't even let his opponents get deep enough to start the berimbolo.

You’re “A” game. On this upcoming event, work you’re A game against their game, whatever it is. That will be better than adding something new this close to a big event you’ve traveled for. For example: Go pull guard. If they double guard pull on you, come up and work your best pass instead of playing their game since Cora doesn’t work the “butt flop” position much. If you come up from a double guard pull, IBJJF gives you an advantage point anyway. Not that you love that sort of thing, but it puts just that much more pressure on them not to stall.

That said, what I would do there with MY game is leg locks or capioeta style passing… but the leg locks are illegal for you guys now in IBJJF anyway…

coincidentally, I stumbled onto this. A detailed breakdown of Rafa stack passing Joao Miyao. Granted, Rafa didnt pass but who, besides Keenan, can pass on a Miyao bro? But you'll see how well under passing can counteract inverting. Might help.

Damn. Lo is my favorite standing passer. I've done so much under passing that even my over passes start from the knees. Lo makes me wanna be a killer standing passer.

Thank you guys, all these are great. Been studying both the videos of Xande and Lo. Lo method is to prevent it from happening all together and I'm into prevention..:) And Xande is just in case something go wrong in the prevention and it got that far. AWESOME!!!!

prevention is key. once they get deep, at the very least, you are losing position. diving over the bolo is a bad idea. going for leg locks there end up with you just getting sucked in deeper. prevent the dlr. stay away from the double boot scoot.

i advise you guys study the bolo, add it to cora's game. she needs to know what is going on there. then try to prevent it.

As of late, she's been playing with the inverted stuff herself. I just teach her to use her inverted stuff to prevent guard passing from the half guard (Z guard), similar to the tornado guard. Its coming along nicely. And yes, if she has the berimbolo in her game, she might not be so confused when kids do it on her. She naturally like all that inverted and spiral stuff...:) Lots to work on this year, at least we have a clear direction. :)

sorry but I don't know how Radar won this match. Miyao did all the attacking, Radar who is a wrestler never even got to wrestle.

ADCC doesn't start keeping points until after the 1st 10 mins. The same way the Miyao bros win on 2 points or an Advantage. I cant stand the butt scoot, its really a turn off for me, but It is what it is, you never have to do the technique in competition, but you should be competent and understand its intricacies to defend it.

I like the Leandro Lo's style of beating the berimbolo better than the Radar style. Constant pressure.

Stay on your knees, pressure passing kills all that. Don't ever let anyone get under you if you don't want to deal with constant detangling. Jean Jacques always stays low and so do I :)

We are talking about the bolo. Maintaining and finishing from the back mount is a different subject. I think rader is awesome and I love his style, but he is one of the toughest guys to fight from that position and miyao was still successful there.

Overall we are making the same point though. You need to know what's happening there whether you plan to use it or not. Knowing is half the game.

From what I’ve seen in socal kid competitions, only a few standouts from AOJ come to mind when I think of polished Berimbolos.
