Joe Lauzon complaining about George's knee sleeves

"I don't see how you can wear your regular fight shorts, compression shorts under that that go to your knee, then wear knee pads on both sides that go halfway down your leg, then ankle supports that go halfway up your leg and down to your toes," Lauzon said. "I don't know what the deal is with the commission, if he'll be allowed to wear those or not, but we're prepared for him either way."

"We'll think about it. I don't know if it will make a huge difference, but at the same time, why give him that advantage? Maybe we'll make a formal request to not let him wear them."

Wow. Does he really think that will give him that much of an advantage? I would think that it would make it easier for the other guy to secure his legs for a takedown and leg locks or something. If Lauzon attacks his legs, George won't be able to just slip out of it like I've seen a lot of guys do. I think think it would create an equal amount of advantages for both sides.

I don't know that much about MMA so I may be way off here, so feel free to correct me. :)

I guess he could wear the knee sleeves too, but it can work against you, imagine if Marquardt was wearing knee sleeves vs Palhares.

Sots didn't even wear them against Pelligrino. If I remember correctly all he wore was 1 knee sleeve. And he still worked Pelligrino. Its not gonna make a difference for J-Lau. You're still gonna get subbed buddy

Interesting. Let's be honest though, any advantage you can have over your opponent is the name of the game. If it falls within the rules, why not use it? We all know that Eddie does talk about the grip that knee sleeves provide. Why does Eddie roll in pants? Grip. Even just a little grip can help. It is within the rule set, so use it. If the commission says "no more X" George takes them off and still wins ;-)

The question is: If George takes them off, is that sportsmanship and if he keeps them on, is that GAMESMANSHIP?

I agree with Ari that it's all about the rules. If they give George an advantage, and the rules allow it, then he'd be stupid to not take full advantage. On the flip side, if the rules are vague or unclear, then Joe would be stupid to not attempt to force George to remove them. I'm not sure but from what I can glean from this thread, they are allowed according to UFC rules, so do your thing George, let the haters hate. Oh yea, and excuses are for losers, so no whining when you get GOGO'd Joe! :)

Sounds like Joe is concerned and has doubts. If he is/were ready, he shouldn't care. There are no guarantees-it's a fight after all. I believe George has the advantage in every phase of the game personally.

It could be a scared Joe, or it could be that someone asked him about it, and he just started ranting. He has always had a little bit of a mouth. Either way, the rules say yes, so deal with it. That's like saying GSP's shorts-tights thing is cheating over regular shorts for the same reason. If anyone really thought it was a problem, they would have brought it up to the UFC or the commission a long time ago. It's just pre-fight antics. End of the day, though, I think George has an edge everywhere, except maybe speed by a small amount. He is stronger, has a better base, and is better at wrestling, bjj, and now apparently boxing (that was fast). I have George by first or second round sub, probably first. My guess is he will almost get an armbar, Joe will gumby his way out, and George will finish with something else from spiderweb or mount.

I think there's definitely advantages both ways so Joe should stop bitching.

Joe's still one of my favorites. I won't lose any respect for him. Just interesting to see that George got inside his head without even trying. Realistically I don't see George finishing him. Just like his last tough fights, I see a dominant 3 rounds. Would love to see rubber guard of course. He seems to love crack head, but mainly uses it to protect himself.

Joe is a very talented fighter and makes exciting fights. I'm surprised he's bitching. George should win!!! George is on another level but anything could happen. Maybe fight of the night!

Wow, this sounds exactly like how other fighters complained about Aoki's pants. Sorry, Aoki is just better and hes proved that. Its like if the playing field isn't level people are going to complain. If your ground game sucks, improve it. You know Aoki's stand up isn't the best, but I never heard him whine about someone who has an advantage over him cause of it. He just sticks to his game plan and what he knows best and prevails. This is why I miss Pride...

Wow, this sounds exactly like the fighters who fought Aoki. The fact is Aoki is better and the pants are more of a show. His stand up isn't great but never complains about someone who is better. He sticks to what he knows and usually prevails. This is why I miss Pride days. Because now if the playing field isn't level people are going to whine.

How can you call it mixed martial arts and not allow a gi? Anyway, since they're elite athletes it is a legitimate complaint. But I think that if someone beat you because of something as small as pants, then you're probably not as good of a fighter as you think you are.

Cmon guys, it's a definite advantage in a MMA fight for George, especially with how well versed he is in 10th planet jj. I agree if used correctly, it can be used against him too. George's success rate hugely increases for securing a submission in the later rounds especially after the sweat begins to pour on. Anyone know what the actual rule states for fight apparel in the UFC? i couldn't find it. It's probably not well defined, but idk.
