Eddie, I remember you once telling me that Jason has sick posture in guard. Any idea when this video was taken?
This is Ooold footage. Not sure what year it was though.
Props to Rener for winning the match. But I'm really not a fan of using the gi to wrap around your opponent. Just seems overboard.
Really Louis? I am surprised you say that. Since one guy was nogi and the other gi, I guess they had to play to their advantages. IF you and I were rolling and you caught me in spider web and I had my arms together and you douche bagged or RLS me, is that over board?
Curious as I don't typically hear 10th Planet guys say things are over board because many people in the gi world have 'out lawed' 10th planet moves in competition for being the same.
I don't see anything wrong with Rener using the gi. it was advantages for both of them. Mayhem could have done the same thing to Rener using his own gi. Awesome match though.
It's a fair move, 100% no question about that. No complaints from me. An instructor can teach his students to choke someone with their belt, socks, or whatever. That to me is overboard. Not something I am interested in learning. Just a personal opinion. But if I rolled with someone wearing a gi and he used his gi to choke me, I wouldn't complain. Didn't mean to offend with the word "overboard".
I'm no fan of gi chokes either but they are legit.
Overboard might not be the right word but I agree. It's like rolling with a rope in your hand or something. Defintely part of their game but when I roll in the gi I don't try stuff like that because it feels like cheating.
I would have been more impressed if Rener won by armbar or something. Surely he has the technique to do moves that don't involve the Gi. Cool choke though. It looked like Mayhem had plenty of opportunities to not allow that set up. Maybe he didn't know what Rener was doing.
Rener should of took off his belt and wraped it around the guys neck he would of got the tap faster. LOL
there was a video on youtube where this kid takes his belt off in the middle of the match and starts wraping it around his opponets neck I cant find it but it was one of the funniest god dam things Ive ever seen
here it is
I think this footage for mayhem was form teh SoCo Invational Grappling tournament years ago.. My instructor was also there (gerald).. :)
Not that impressed???? How can you not be that impressed by someone taking there gi and wrapping it around the others neck. It's not like they fell like that, he set it up and held Mayhem broken down long enough to do it. I've rolled with Mayhem and he is a beast. Holding him in guard with broken posture was made to look easy, Mayhem is a strong dude, it wasn't easy.
I am not familiar with that gi choke, but it looks like a tough one to do to anyone not to mention a fresh opponent with no shirt on.
Great video.
i think if i rolled with a guy with a gi on and me no gi , i would probably do ''hockey fight'' style where you put thier clothes over their head
I'd love to hear Renato's take on this video.
i think its all fair, they started the match knowing the set up, so im sure if there was any problem they would of fixed it. Gi chokes are very sneaky but very good.
I know it sounds odd but im sure someone in the world has gotten into a fight and choked someone with their shirt tail or with the collar of the other guys shirt.
Sorry. It just seems cheap to me.
thats gi jitz for ya.. and fuck the word overboard..
Mayhem is sick though. Really no weak spots in his game.
The Mendes Bros use that Lapel Choke from the back. I don't think it's cheap to use, but I do think it would have been cooler to see a true NoGi grappling match between the 2. I'd still have to give the match to Rener though with or without the gi. The dude's been training Jiu Jitsu since birth and his in depth instruction on the basics is the zenith of teaching in my mind. And you know I guy who teaches Jiu Jitsu that well is a beast for sure. Also, no offense meant towards Mayhem...he's one of my all time favorite fighters.
i know this was at the so cal pro am and i have been looking for the DVD for a couple years if anyone knows where to get it.
