Mental clarity skills, decision making skills, nunchuck skills...
Learning to roll with the punches that life throws at you, be patient, make strong decisions and stand by them.
Whenever my boss sends me an email about my performance, I armdrag first (don't be silly, everyone trains these days) and take his back, then proceed to choke him unconcious.
I used to be very impatient. Now, instead of standing in a line getting angry, I calmly look at the guy in front of me and think "He's got a fat neck, would I have to goon it first or could I sink in the butterfly choke right away"
Definitely nunchucks :D
I am for real smarter because of Jiu Jitsu, always problem solving has really focused my mental focuses.
That and whenever I drop something I catch the fuck out of it :D
Focused my mental focuses... Yeah that was real smart...
This is so true man, since I started jj, I have literally intercepted footballs from people playing catch (awkward), and have been happy to jump into a batting cage here and there. I feel more athletic, and I get competitive with exercise, especially against more fit people. I even play basketball, and I suck at basketball, but I enjoy playing now. There's something about the athleticism and skill management required for Bjj that opens up all these other things for people.
My buddy spent a month training at zenith in Brazil, where he met "Buchecha's" father. He told my buddy that Buchecha never kicked a ball right, or played any sport, on the contrary, he's completely uncoordinated in any other sport. It's crazy how after jiujitsu you're automatically comfortable with other things that include balance and coordination.
Cardio, cardio, cardio.
I ran in a charity 5K and I had my best time ever even though I hadn't ran in over a year since training BJJ. Bought 5 day ski pass that had to be used within 7 days for resorts in SLC. We ended up skiing 5 straight days using the other 2 for travel. I kept thinking how difficult it was hitting the slopes after not skiing for 10 years and with the thin air due to the high elevation but it was really no big deal compared to getting smashed in class!

I think more than anything the martial arts have taught me how to strive for excellence. Or what true excellence even looks like. The idea that repetition and commitment can make anybody good at anything is empowering.
I think it's obvious in which aspect of life rolling on the ground and controlling other peoples body benifits you ;)
I don't know if the guys at HQ have noticed, but I have a mild case of tourettes; head tics and blinking. Physical strain and concentration while doing jiujitsu has lowered the symptoms by like 90 percent; only thing that works better is alcohol.
Yo Royce, does weed have the opposite effect and thus amplify it? Just wondering.
Well the flexibly can only help in your sex life for sure:p
In my case, weed does the same thing as alcohol and lowers my symptoms. Anything that relaxes me takes my mind away from it all; ie post workouts, alcohol, weed, etc.
What triggers the tics are high stress scenarios such as taking tests in a class room setting. The combination of 'I didn't study, I'm screwed' and the paranoia of people noticing your tics amplifies the symptoms.
Work hard to make more money to buy a rashguard :)
For me seeing the measurable results from putting in hard work is something I apply to new things im learning. If I put that grinding mindset I have for training into something new, I know it will come.
Plus it works good for the ladies. I had a chick at the club sitting on my lap facing me. I hip bumped her, to butterflys, glided her to her feet, then off to the bar. She felt the flo;)
Humility, respect, heart and patience.
Computer hacking skills.
General health mostly. It's giving me an outlet for the desire I have to express myself strategically and tactically and forces me to express that in a way that doesn't have me sitting in front of my TV with a game controller in my hands. :D
Well , for about a year I got really lazy , neglected going to the gym , mostly did Muay Thai/Kickboxing , not for competing , because I was never at the level, but more for fun and health . Now , in that time , I gained weight and found that my already bad temper got worse . Just recently I decided to get back to the gym , decided no more KB because I lost interest in it and was tired of head shots that would set me back , so now I am investing my time in Jiu Jitsu . Other than the fact that I am a frustrated white belt that has no idea what the fuck is going on , I feel so much better , happier and less of a temper . So yeah , its helping me physically and mentally , and I plan to keep rollin' !
Life and Jiujitsu are the same thing my friend, especially if you wear a gi. :)
