MTS 72 "The Mystery Pass" is now LIVE!

Hello brothers and sisters,

MTS episode 72 "The Mystery Pass" is now LIVE! This edition of Mastering The System is all about perfecting one of THE most important passes in the game, the under pass. This pass is one of the hardest passes to master, in fact it's so hard to master that I'm not even quite sure why it's so difficult. That's why I'm now calling it the Mystery pass. I don't know how many times I've gone over it in class yet the majority of my student still have a very hard time putting all the pieces together. But know this, once it is fully mastered, it will be your ace in the hole pass, the pass you use when all other passes fail you. This pass works beautifully against most all guards no matter how new and unorthodox it is, and most of the old school guards as well. Although I'm still baffled as to why most of my students are perplexed by it, in this episode I give my all to get as many 10p soldiers hitting this pass on the regular as possible, I break it all down like never before. Completely understanding each step and the battles at each level is the secret to this mysterious pass, that was passed on to me, no pun intended, by my master Jean Jacques Machado, so you know you gotta get on it ASAP. Thanks for another amazing MTS eddie, ive always liked the mystery pass but tehre were those few problems like what to do when they get butterfly hooks etc. youve troubleshot all my problems i think.

my only question is, is there an entry from full guard? to explain better. IM not sure if its just being a low level belt but sometimes if im having trouble getting out of their closed guard, i want to reach back get one arm underhooked and then the other, but it seems like every time i do i just get a triangle thrown up on me or it doesnt really seem to work.

what im wondering is, is there a better entry from being in closed guard to use the underpass or should i just focus on other passes?

im going to be putting more work into it all so maybe ill just find after more reps from other positions that this one works better.

This MTS was SO good. I've trained once since watching it and I was able to pull off the mystery pass once, and almost got the flyover off of it, both times against my brown belt instructor.

And Frank, you're instruction was incredible. The first time trying it, I got all the way to stepping the foot over, before getting thrown off, also against my brown belt instructor.

These are game changing.

Isaac just pummel both arms under the same leg, aim for the back pocket of your shorts with both arms on your chosen side preferably the top leg of theirs. Still a vague chance of you being triangled but nowhere near as suicidal as going one arm on either side. That's for Palhares and guys of his immense treestumpability who can blast up to space and back in an instant.

Don't worry about how many times you get thrown off you'll start to get use that to help get you into the finishing position, you'll see! Just like Royler helped Eddie hit the Vapor roll!

You have to learn to wrap that neck up perfectly as you drop into the roll for the finish into triangle. Its all about patience, timing, grip strength and great balance.

Sell the hand fight (distraction), stay tight pressing your hips into the back of the armpit for added pressure to hold them(check out eddies right leg curl under the left shoulder when he sets up the can crusher), just long enough, to thread your right leg around the head and catch it, just like the way Rigan Machado does on many of his 'go to' triangle set ups, catching it in your left hand. He's always grabbing his shin to create the perfect angle.
Your head should be following the right leg creating the roll. Momentum right?

Remember, angles for strangles! That roll has to be flawless.
Try hit the triangle and stick it locked in while laying on your right hand side so that by the time he comes up to his knees he's probably dead!

Also squeeze helps greatly in this clinch. Like all great clinches of the game require. Work on it constantly. That meathook from side control is dependant greatly upon how well you can control the back of the head. Dig into that far armpit for leverage and use your forearm bones to jack the head up high enough to make room for that flying threading right leg into Rigan catch position.

Its a thing of beauty I really love this set up.

Just remember, if you want to catch solid jitsu freaks you have to master those slick transitions.

Funny that Eddie featured the Can crusher on MTS72. Its my plan B in this combination if my triangle fails.

The mystery pass from full guard or from any guard is the same really, you gotta get both arms underneath, that's always the first goal. Then you gotta get to the hip heist somehow someway. There will be bumps and bruises and steps and chaos along the way but those are the 2 goals :)

I got into passing this way after watching a youtube double under pass gi video from world champ bernardo faria, i began implementing it almost a year ago. When I first began training I was big over under passer, then for a while now I have been a big torreando pass guy mixed in w a little leg drag. When I saw this Bernardo video (I watch him a lot bc I'm big fan of deep half) I decided to throw it into to my game and start playing double under. Besides the double under scoop up and knee to the head pass when I saw this I thought this might be interesting bc I can go traditional over under or go w/ bernardo's pass. Now I watched this episode of MTS and I am 100% dedicated to my double under passing game. Thanks for covering this in the latest episode, it helped a lot!
