I'm looking to get a new gym bag, preferably a backpack, or one that converts to a backpack. Anyone have any recommendations for quality bags?

Datsusara. Get yourself a Gearbag or a Battlepack. Both Amazing products, I never go to the gym without them.

Came here to say this. Had mine for 2 years or more now. I think I recall it being anti microbial or something. Basically, the bag has carried some funk, and yet, it doesn't stink after 2 years. I haven't been gentle either. I've used it as carry on luggage as well. They take a beating and still look new. Can't say enough good things about the product. Worth every penny when you consider it's gonna last a decade plus. Plus, they just plain look cool. And Chris' customer service is superior. It's a no lose deal.
yea I just got my datsusara before the weekend, very happy with it. And from reading the review above glad I got it. I got the Mini.
Datsusara 100%
Yup. Datsusara gear bag all the way..
Just to echo everyone else - Datsusara is awesome! I got a Gear Bag Pro about a month ago and it is brilliant. The quality of the material and the construction is first class.
Datsusara
Anyone have the jaco convertible bag? Also, the zog man also told me he rocks a datsusara bag.
Maybe I am a cheap son of a bitch, but this is my favorite bag

have any of you guys had your datsusara bags fall apart on you? i remember reading a thread on sherdog last year where people were saying their bags had the stitch come undone.
I own the two Origin backpacks. The first one (The mundial) kinda fell apart on me but I loved it up until then, and their new one I just recently bought and it is pretty sweet. They have options of buying a smaller pack that attaches to it and overall its a nice bag. Only thing I dont like, it's a bit big for my preference. All made in the USA, check it out. www.originbjj.com
I've heard about older bags being made with cotton stitching which is why they were tearing. They were supposed to be using hemp thread. Last guy told me that he contacted Chris about it and he had it repaired free. Not sure if that offer still stands, but Chris does seem to stand behind his product. As for me, I have a newer model with the hemp stitching and I've had zero issues. And I have not been gentle.
I have an origin one which is pretty cool!

I use the Hayabusa duffle bag that converts to a back pack.

I use a 5.11 Rush 72 backpack. From what I saw when doing the same kind of research, it's about the same size as the Datsusara Battlepack Pro. It's more than big enough for all the stuff I need to go train (I keep my gi and nogi gear in there simultaneously), and I've used it as carry on luggage on airlines. There are a bunch of guys at our gym that use 5.11 bags, and they've all spoken well of their bags. I haven't had any issues with mine, and I've had it a little under a year.
Chris's (Datsusara) customer service is the best you can find. I had a tear in one of my old ones and replaced it free of charge, no question including postage to Australia, so have no doubts that if for some weird reason you have an issue he will sort it out quickly and do whatever is required to satisfy your issue.
Again. Datsusara.
FYI, I have no link to Chris at all just love his products and when it's so rare to get exceptional customer service these days when you do get it I think you should support that company in any way you can.
thanks for all the info, guys.
I fully support minimalism and cost-efficiency; you can buy ~50 of these for the price of one of those fancy Datsusara guys.
On a side note, I generally wear these instead of $60 rashguards:

I found them on sale once for $7 each.
Please email me when stuff like this happens guys (chris[at}dsgear.com, we warranty all bags for at least 3 years and even after that I always help out. Sometimes we get bad units but I always replace them, it's a fucking struggle to keep quality up but the bags get better every run.
Thanks all for the support by the way, it's much appreciated. I had always hoped the gear would go over well with my 10th Planet brothers and sisters as it's not only made for the sport but I made it out of hemp which we all want to support. Yes it's not the cheapest bag out there but it beats the fuck out of any synthetic plastic crap bag if you are using it for BJJ gear as it's breathes and is anti-microbial by nature. It's also very functional and warrantied for years, oh and there is a 10th planet discount code...

cant recommend datsusara enough.
i have three different kinds of bags, they are all awesome.
I just got the Jaco convertable. It's really nice. Plenty of room or all your gear (gi, shorts, gloves, shin gaurds, shoes, flip flops) and clothes. I like the separate compartment for sweaty clothes. That compartment has mesh so sweaty clothes can air out while being kept separate from your clean clothes. It is a large bag though but converts from backpack to duffle bag. I cannot attest to its durability yet since I just got it. MMA Warehouse has a 20% discount going right now too.
I went through several backpacks, duffle bags, etc before spending the money on a good gym bag. I love this bag. The main zipper is retarded huge, but I bet it'll never break. My only complain about the bag is that is doesn't have water-bottle pockets, but the bag is so bad-ass that I got over it immidiatly.

I think MMA Warehouse has a 20% off sale right now till fathers day, and they just got some of our bags back in stock, so if you want a good deal on a Datsusara now might be the time. Sorry I can't make these bags cheaper guys, hemp fabric is pricey as fuck all.
If you don't go with Datsusara, you are fuxin up.
heheh ty sir :)
