I found out today that if you only compete in grappling tournaments and dont fight mma, that makes you soft because you cant take being hit in the face. I'm just curious what others thoughts are on the subject. I did have a fight against a much more experienced opponent so I guess Im not soft, but whats your opinion?

Mastering how to control the above and teach it to others so that even a 7 year old can do it is soft???
Competing in the OLDEST form of combat sport in existence is soft??

Idk man, i can't agree with whoever said this.. I have been a striker for significantly longer than I have been into grappling. Anybody can throw punches and kicks and EVERYBODY can take getting hit after a few weeks, but even Bruce Lee got whooped on the ground. Most of those, "I'm sorry I suck, I'm just used to getting hit in the face while I grapple" guys, are the soft ones.

id be asking them, where they got their drugs from and how much it costs! thats the boxer mentality that royce gracie fought through 21 years ago and thats where the argument should have stopped. being soft isnt based on you doing jiu jitsu or mma. at best you could say its an opinion of someone that hasnt got enough knowledge of either sport.
first off, id point out that lots of people who have no problem being knocked out wet themselves like little girlies (sorry to little girlies reading this) when they get choked, and vice versa for people who dont get hit. so describing whats soft is way harder than figuring out if someone does jits or mma. and in fact, there are lots of people in mma who are scared of getting hit in the face as well. its just they were stupid enough to get into the cage before getting over it.

i dont think this person really thought what they were saying through at all. probably just a bigoted sheep who wants to make themself feel less inssecure and one up you by insulting what you do and praising what they do.
and sorry, do they realise the list of people who they have to include. for example, cyborg? keenan cornelius, eddie? lol im not saying mma fighters are or arnt soft but this person is batshit crazy if they think they can call everyone who does jiu jitsu and not mma soft.

I have to agree with Mike. I can absolutely tell a difference in my cardio, aggression, toughness, and pain tolerance when I'm training striking versus when I'm not. Training striking and mma just makes me an overall harder person both physically and mentally. I actually just started going to striking class after a long lay off and that shit hurts. I can roll round after round but I'm gassed after 2-3 rounds of sparring, bagwork, or pads. I don't know if this is more psychological but I know its true in my case.
I would link the facebook post but its privacy is set to friends only. I got called out because I said I would only fight again if I was a felon and couldn't get a real job. My comment was misinterpreted to be me saying all fighters are felons or dont have real jobs. I assumed they understood I was being sarcastic when I answered yes. Then a fighter gets tagged like Im calling that person out and he went on about all you softies not getting punched.

It comes down to the individual. Brock, for example, trained for MMA but clearly wasn't good at dealing with punches. Ricco Rodriguez was another guy who trained for MMA but couldnt' take a punch. Training MMA doesn't make you harder. Training BJJ doesn't make you softer. That's my opinion. It comes down to the individual.
I don't know about anyone else but don't like getting hit in my face weather its stand up or grappling. I don't think it makes you soft. Sometimes when we have a guy getting ready for a fight we make them roll with gloves and we don't hit hard but if they expose themselves we slap them around. The first time i ever did that I notice I'm not worried about being puched in the face while rolling, i did exposed my face alot more and learned the hard way to cover and had to change my game a bit to prevent getting hit. So i can see how people can say jiu jitsu might create bad habits for MMA fighters. But to say jiu jitsu makes you soft i think is crazy.
I don't really do much striking to be fair but I get busted up then i roll too. If i walk off the mats with a busted lip i know i had a hard night of training. My favorite rolls are with guys that push the pace win or lose I feel i get a better workout

The conditioning and relaxation/tenseness of muscles is different. Both reqiure relaxation, in both relaxation can only be developed thru sparring and drilling. In this way they are the same.

I tell the Mushin guys that what they are chasing is to close to religous fever for me. For me its a sport I enjoy with my kids, whether we box or grapple and we are here to have fun. I still think of myself more as an MMA guy, though I haven't fought in over 3 years. I still very much enjoy training, and training others, but the grappling aspect has always been my favorite part. I find it the most interesting, and mentally challenging. This is probably also why I've never liked the Gi. These days I stick to no-Gi grappling when it comes to competing, and I definitely don't think I'm any "softer," nor do I think that the guys I train with who only do jiu jitsu are soft, at least, not because of that. Some people are "soft" and some aren't (though that is surely subjective), but it has nothing to do with the sport they choose.

I prefer to compete in jits competitions but leading up to my first MMA fight, I was confident but 1 thing I wasn't looking forward to was the getting hit part. Once I got in the cage though, the adrenaline was pumping and I knew the punches were happening but I didn't feel them. The same goes for a horrible knee I got caught with in the eye. I didn't feel it but it definitely left a mark. On the plus side, I did a great raccoon impression for the next few days. :cool: What I'm trying to say is that fight gave me the confidence to get back in the cage without worrying about being hurt by the punches but I still prefer jiu jitsu comps, they're just more fun in my opinion! I DON'T think that makes me or anyone else soft!
