Patellar Tendon Pain Due To Lockdown?

So my patellar tendon has been sore lately, and I initially attributed it towards improper use of rubber guard. So naturally I stopped my rg use to try and increase flexibility. But last night I noticed that my knee was actually hurting during my use of lockdown. Now let me just clarify, I have had a knee injury in my other leg, so I know what knee pain is lol. This is an extremely mild case. But I also know that it's not to be overlooked.

I'm extremely tenacious with my lockdown and refuse to give up on it on any terms other than my own. And have developed a habit of "sticky legs", in that I catch lockdown from a lot of unusual angles.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what you did to fix it.

How much actually extension are you putting into the lockdown, Usually when I do the lockdown I'm trying to stay glued to you, but still maximize hip/rotation/movement so its more knee pinch (Kinda Like Deep Half), If you're extending the shit out of it and essentially nastily crushing his calf the whole time, I could see you getting a little twinge in the knee because that all out extension limits maneuverability.

honestly i dunno man. I definitely use the knee squeeze to prevent passing but I do extend to initiate whipping or to pull them back down. Ill have to keep my eye on it. It may very well be that I'm allowing my wrapping leg to be loose sometimes while in weird positions, creating a bad rubber guard type stress on my knee.

I've had mild pain and niggling injuries the same as well....doing the Ido portal squat routine has helped a lot and you should also try some Bulgarian split squats, which is just one leg propped up on your sofa for example and squat with the other leg, just slow and controlled body weight exercise, found it helped me mate if you wanna give it a go and also if you run a lot don't, found it made it worse, and also sometimes trying to stretch too deep too quickly with the butterfly stretch

so stop doin that. DO NOT put yourself in a possible injury type position, move and get to it from a "safer" angle. Play the grey area and transition. We will work on it.

Thanks Brandon. Yea that looseness was definitely the problem. Focused on knee squeeze and it was a noticeable difference.

The real question is, when am I gonna get my opportunity to try and avoid John Mejias Darce???

bro see a doctor. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you have no reason to actually believe it is the patellar tendon. it could be anything in that area.

get it checked out.

As a biology major, I can say with 100% accuracy that it is my patellar tendon that is mildly sore. As someone who's experienced a real knee injury, I can say that this doesn't need medical attention but does require me to make a conscious tweak to my lockdown.

Personally, I do let go of the lockdown momentarily when guys are close to escaping it, or if the angles seem to be "weird". Sometimes, all it takes is a little adjustment - a shift of the hips, a twist in your body angle, slightly different foot placement, etc - before you get it back, in a solid position that doesn't involve your legs (or knees) bending at weird angles.

If all else fails, there's always regular half guard or even quarter guard to fall back on temporarily, before snatching that lockdown again (sometimes, switching away from the lockdown is a fantastic way of keeping your opponent guessing - you may even find sweeps and the full guard from these unexpected changes). :)

usually I'de say rg could cause lateral colateral ligament and crucate ligament problems so I doubt its the petellar ligament causeing u that pain. the petela ligament would be more from excessive knee extension exersizes (lots of quad exercises like lunges and squats for example) but I guess maybe u didn't thought it was your petalr ligament. In any case I'de say rest it, ice it after training a bit ( 10 mins is usually enough and make sure your warmed up before grappling so your ligaments are flexible, or put heat on your knee before class starts assuming your not in the acute phase anymore. All figured out actually! As has been stated, this was from lockdown. Isn't an injury, just has been sore. I've found that if I warm it up properly there is no pain at all. My patellar tendon is safe ;)

I have been suffering with a "Tenis Elbow" type of pain on my Tibia, where my Hamstring tendons (Semimembransus and Semitendinosus tendons) attach to the bone. (Just below the knee on the top of my shin, on the inside basically)
I never get pain until I roll and do a hamstring curl to bring my heel to my butt.

I believe it is from working hamstring curls in rubberguard, specifically from curling hard with my mission control leg as I clear the neck. The reason I believe that is the cause is because I was clearing the neck with my New York arm holding the foot and leg up high for a long time and never had a problem, but after trying to use the Double bagger for a couple weeks, I started to experience this issue.
I found when letting go with my New York arm to grab the double bag, I had to put some serious effort into the leg curl to keep leg position.

But I notice it more when playing lockdown than any other time. When playing my donimant side, I am locking down their right leg. My left leg is my outside leg, and as the lockdown battle ensues, I find I have to battle through the foot fight and sometimes that entails a tight hamstring curl bringing my left foot up tight towards my arse in order to sneak that foot around their lockdown defense. It hurts like a Bastard and is serioulsy effecting my Bottom Half guard game.

We also drilled a Top Halfguard Lockdown pass last week and I couldn't even do the motion because of this pain.
The bright side is I bruised my ribs, so I am taking a week off, so I am using some asian medicinal tape (Powerstrips) and giving it rest and noticing an improvement. Hopefully this shit heals up. It has been a couple months now.

Damn. Hope that heals up for ya man. Have you considered going to crack head and then doing an invisible collar type knee squeeze to lock their far shoulder before going double bag? I know that double bag is usually a lot easier after going invisible collar. If you could work that same mechanics from crack head it might make it easier on ya

When I was experimenting with Double bagger, it was just to keep their posture broken while clearing the head. I have just returned to clearing the head with my right foot on the hip and my New York arm supporting my Mission Control leg now. Much better for me.
Since the Bethlehem seminar on the Gogo clinch, I have been working my shortcut paths as well, so that is less stress on those particular tendons as well. (Mission control -> Meathook -> Kungfu -> Gogo clinch)
But I am comfortable working the basic Rubber Guard path. As long as I don't rely strictly on Hamstring Curling my left leg, I can go through all the step of the RG path with no issues.
