Stomp -> Pyramid -> Chill Dog = Bad Idea?

*LONG, POSSIBLY BORING STORY ALERT*

So, in my final match at a competition last weekend, I did the worst guard pull in the history of jiujitsu, and literally just fell on my butt while my opponent run around me and took side control. I then proceeded to spin in circles, trying to chase him down for the next few minutes, hoping to secure a lockdown.

Then it happened. Lockdown. Heck yeah! I knew what I was gonna do from here. "Gogo clinch time baby! It's gonna be OVER!!"

So I went -- Lockdown -> Stomp, then instead of securing the "New York Pyramid" (sorry I don't know if there's an official name for this), I went straight for a "Chill Dog Pyramid" (with my forearm on the near side of his face).

What happened next totally took me off guard. My opponent drove his head away from me (i.e. giving me a free omaplata), so I went for it, BUT.........

......my overhook (i.e. left) arm was stuck (trapped by my own omaplata). So instead of having that left arm free to control my opponent's body, I tried to sit up to stop the stepover instead. Needless to say, my opponent just jumped right over, effectively killing my best sub attempt, and all hopes of winning the match.
(It ended in a draw, which gave the other guy the gold as he had better results in previous matches than I did - our bracket was done in a round robin format)

Oh, the horror...... @_@

But, it's not all bad. I'm sure there's something I can learn from this. So, my question to you guys (who are obviously a lot better at this transition than I am) - When going for the transition from lockdown to gogo clinch, is it necessary to stop at New York to pull your overhook out first? (That's what I was doing at my gym, and the transition to the gogo clinch was working great) Or, is there a way to catch Chill Dog from the Stomp, make a move AND pull your overhook out at the same time (without giving your opponent enough space to pull his own arm out).

Finished my first logeoplata last night from the gogo clinch!

I myself have been having more success getting to the gogo clinch from perpendicular jiu claw and mono control from mount though.

I was trying to rep the Gogo clinch last night in live rolls and I was fucking it up somehow. I need to revisit the MTS footage and iron out my loose spots.

That perpendicular jiu claw and mono control from mount setup also sounds really interesting. ;)

I mean, I'm definitely not an authority on the gogo clinch at all. But from my limited exposure to it, it seems to be more dependent on the "perfect" rubber guard angle, the angle that doesn't require too much flexibility, which is great for me lol. The pyramid is a decent control, but from what I remember it makes you more flat on your back than the meat hook. If I'm in a more flat on my back position, but I'm thinking gogo clinch, I'd prefer to go basic path, jiu claw, perpendicular jiu claw, gogo clinch, especially since I don't really like the omoplata

Pyramid is practically 100% a triangle set up. Clearing the head to chilldog is transitioning/abandoning pyramid.

In pyramid you want the heel of your overhook side to touch your knee, which means you want your knee to beat his far shoulder. The arm that cleared the neck should have wrist control preferably but bicep will work.

Pyramid is a deadzone.

Ive been hitting the Gyro from the pyramid. and if i fail at that armbar i usally hit the triangle right off it

Good stuff Bobby, I've never noticed that detail about pyramid before -> "heel of your overhook side to touch your knee". Will definitely be adjusting my pyramid from here on out.

I'm no expert by any means but just from reading your post and not being there it sounds to me like you may not have really had a true Chill Dog or true Pyramid for two reasons:

1.) Sounds like your opponents left arm was still in-between your legs, Pyramid is when the dudes left arm (assuming your left leg is over his head) is outside your legs and your left heel and right knee are touching...it's not really technically a Pyramid if your left heel and right knee are touching but the guys arm is still inside. (As far as I know)

2.) Was your left overhook arm over his right arm as an overhook or over your left knee? It sounds like you got ahead of yourself with your left overhook and overhooked his arm because you were licking your chops to try to transition to gogo clinch too early and overhooked his arm when you should have had your left arm over your left knee to be in chill dog- so doesn't sound like you really had a "Chill Dog Pyramid" more like some sort of modified chill dog with an overhook on his arm instead with your left heel and right knee touching while his left arm was still inside your legs.

You could have taken out your left overhook and put it over your left knee to go to true chill dog then transitioned right to > meathook (w/ stiff arm C-cup on opp. left elbow) then right to > Gogo clinch (Left or Right arm head clear)> Finish (Gogo clinch choke|Locoplata|Frotoplata|Hazlette|Hazeleg|Monkey Mount|Strait Jacket|Special K|Monoplata...etc.)

DrewD, you're spot on with both points. Only small note is that his left arm was on the outside (i.e. not in-between my legs). My left heel and right knee definitely weren't touching though (his shoulder was still there between those two points).

Would like to know though, what's does touching the left heel to the right knee accomplish? You're at least the 2nd person here to make that point, so I figure it's gotta be really important. :)

Basically it helps to prevent the guy from bringing his left arm back inside your legs so you can get the triangle locked up. When you're in true pyramid you basically already have the triangle set up. You just have to windshield wiper your right leg over his head and your left leg to the left and lock in the figure four-and you're right into a locked triangle ready to be finished appropriately etc.
