Its probably hurting because you might have been trying to play rubber guard when your flexibility wasn't quite good enough, thus you end up pulling on your knee more than you have too if you had good flexibility. There seems little doubt to me, due to the mechanics of the rubber guard, that you are puuting strain on your knee, its just how much strain depends on your flexibility of your hips and bum.
you just got to rest it like crazy, there is no point messing around with your knees.

yea i was having issues too (inner groin), mines getting better, but i think some people try to force RG.
not saying you are but you should make sure you're stretching it correctly, as this could easily be the reason your knee is messed up. oh and by the way, knees don't stretch.
If he was injuring his knee due to improper technique then just switching sides will only injure the other knee.
I jacked my knee playing 50/50. So now I'm all about a knee brace and modified movements until the achyness goes away, trying to keep knee flexation to a minimum.
I feel with this system one of the most important thing is to get a foam roller and roll out your it bands. I learned the hard way in my first year I had a lot of tension in my knees and got injured,a trainer gave me a foam roller it helped out a lot. Take the foam roller and roll out your calves too it make a real difference.
Did it start hurting while working your guard or while stretching? And what stretches are you doing?
is it the inside or outside of the knee? Do you feel a burning sensation?
Make sure your doing hip specific flexibility drills. Anytime you pull on the leg below the knee there is a danger of over stressing the knee in an attempt to increase hip flex. You see this when guys are working lotus and rg even more so. In RG there is less perspective because your working in a 360 sphere, plus when your sooooo close to a move or position in the heat of a roll you can pull just that inch too far. When ever I piss my knees off my half guard game goes up a notch:) Don't get frustrated it's a long term project.
Just a chance for you to master that weak side.
My strong side is everyone else's weak side. I had an injury a few years ago to my lower back which prevented me from using the traditional "hug the left leg". I had to switch to being a right leg hugger. This has some advantages because 90% of the population are right hand dominate and when you attack their left side, it cause all sorts of problems.

I have both knees all jacked up do to racing dirtbikes when I was younger. My right has no acl or pcl due to a severe dislocation during a race, and my left has arthritis from counter weighting all these years. But if it werent for my knee injuries ending my kickboxing dreams, I never would have started training japanese jiujitsu all those years ago that led me to where I am today. knee stretches are crucial and mine actually have more flexibility and less pain since I started stretching for my tpjj game. But the two bulging discs in my back hurt every damn day... that could be old age.
I'll work the weak side! =( Damn! Back to square 1!

Man, i didn't know people get injuries so often, my flexibilitys pretty good to be fair, so i can understand why i don't get injured. I can almost triangle choke myself, :D lol
Your lucky you get to teach at a 10th planet JJ, sucks for me cause there ae no 10th planet JJ schools in England. If one came to England though and it came to my local area, i'd be screaming like a lil girl, i would be there instantly. Of course i would still carry on with my Kung Fu and MMA though, lol.
