Body Jewelry In Jiu Jitsu

Of all people to ask their opinion about this, I figured you guys would be the best. All of my life I have always wanted a belly button ring, and I was told that for my 16th birthday I could get one, and that day is coming really soon. Of course I still want one, but my only concern is how it would interfere with my training. I see that Ronda Rousey has one so obviously it could be trained with, but for that period of time where I can't take it out worries me a little bit. I had the idea to just stick a large band-aid over my belly button under my rash guard while training to keep it from getting ripped out until I can start taking it out though. Some have told me it would be okay, and others told me it was a bad idea. But I was hoping I could get some feedback from you guys...? It would be greatly appreciated! (:

Bad idea, I've seen several injuries due jewelery. I personally pulled a earring stud out of a students head with a pair of pliers (after being repeatedly told to remove his jewelry). I also witnessed a guy have a compound fracture of his ring finger due to a wedding band.

Yea having sharp objects on your person while rolling just doesn't seem like a fun time to me.

Do I really want to? Hahahah. But here's what I've noticed about all of yall's responses: they're all about jewelry on the outside. Mine will be covered up with not only a rashie, but a huge band aid as well so nothing can touch it. And it would only be for the short amount of time I would have to keep it in so the hole wouldn't close up...

I told you about the ones I witnessed myself. I've heard about a girls belly ring getting torn out as well, I just didn't see that one happen. It would be extremely foolish on your part to get one and continue to train, not only injury but risk of infection as well.

Someone going knee on belly across to mount while digging that knee across your belly? Seems like there are a lot of ways it could get yanked on real nice.

Will it be ok? Maybe.. it might be just fine until it heals and you can take it out. Or...maybe it'll get ripped right out of your skin.

I figure you've got Herzog, one of the top 10p instructors in the organization, telling you in no uncertain terms that it's a bad idea. I guess "But I'm going to have a band-aid and a rashie on it!" is one way you can react... :)

Personally when someone more knowledgeable than me, one of my elders, says "Stop, what you are doing is dangerous, don't do that!", I give them the benefit of the doubt, regardless of how fashionable I may look doing it.

Then again I've done shit a LOT more dangerous than rolling with a belly piercing. You probably won't die from it, even worst case... I guess a nasty staff infection might kill you, seems pretty low % though... shrug.

At this point you've asked the question, gotten your answer, argued with that answer... now you can go ahead and do it but if I was a betting man, I'll lay good odds that the universe will take you up on your challenge and rip that thing right out, just to teach you a lesson... You know how the universe like irony and has that satirical sense of humor, right?

Is it worth it? Maybe if you were some regular chick showing off at the beach regularly. You have far more important things going on to be concerned with superficial things that could be detrimental to your jiu jitsu. Just my opinion.

If it's something you really want, give it proper time to heal up and take it out before class.

I think this is the best advice. Dyana is young and wants to experience life, so she should do it. But just be aware that it's another responsibility, not just in terms of your safety, but potentially for your training partners as well.

Also, I wonder where the 10P ladies are for this thread. So far it's just been a bunch of dudes giving her advice lol

Good point, but as I said my training is FAR more important than a naval piercing so I'll have to miss out on that one. But that's totally okay with me because Jiu Jitsu is the most important thing here and I'm pretty sure I'll get better life experiences from that (:

I appreciate your feedback, from all of you. Honestly. All you guys made me realize that it's a lot worse idea than I thought it would be, and my training is far more important than a fashion statement. Also, Mr.Murray did make a point that made me realize something, and I wanted to say that in no way did I mean to be disrespectful or rude in any of my comments Mr.Herzog, and I apologize if I came off as such. I figure you know what you're talking about way more than a lot of people and I'll be sure I won't be stupid enough not to listen to you.

You assume only females have body piercings. I've had male students with nipple, navel and even prince albert piercings.

I am glad you changed your mind Dy. I do have a belly ring. I got it before I started training and before I really started working out. I ended up having to get it pierced twice due to infection the first time despite following the cleaning directions. The piercer said that the belly button is where they see the most infections after piercing. Plus, despite it being covered it does get snagged easily in daily life so I have to remember to take mine out before doing any workouts or training. :)

I was already leaning towards no, but I wanted to just see what everyone said on here since it's something I have always wanted. But the risks are too great.

+1 for the nipple piercings on guys. I've personally trained with two guys in judo who had their nipple piercings "removed" during sparring. Not a pretty picture.

Yea, sometimes I forget that guys get body piercings too. I guess I thought of that because of the location of the piercing; haven't seen too many guys with belly buttons pierced.

I think this is a wonderful idea. Not just a classy and visually elegant body accessory, a bellybutton piercing is also a statement of individuality and an assertion of independence. Provided that you train exclusively in 10th Planet jiujitsu (and none of those other dojos, booo) you'll be fine, as you should be aware that gripping piercings is completely legal in gi jiujitsu and is especially encouraged by the IBJJF. Sometimes it can help you while defending a kimura to grab onto it yourself, or to secure spider web, but in general it will be to your detriment. Plus, people with a less nuanced understanding of grappling rulesets will accuse you of cheating; one of the main reasons I stopped training in the gi is because people always said it was "cheap" and a "strong guy's defense" to hold on to my prince albert. In a way, I suppose they're right.

About 10 years ago I had both nips pierced and thought I could get away with putting band aids, then a layer of surgical tape on them, then a rash guard wagering I'd be pretty much safe during rolls. Personal experience....I was sooo...dead..wrong. I'm lucky I didn't get one of them torn completely out during being on bottom of side control. You could go the "try yourself and find out route," but I'm gonna say that over a long enough time period it's a 100% chance of going quite badly. Sorry to burst the proverbial bubble for ya, but when it comes to the safety of my fellow Nibirus/friends/family, I'd rather you be able to make an educated decision when going into something. Good luck on your life decision on "To Pierce, or not to pierce, that is the question."

Clever! hahah I'm actually thinking about getting a tattoo for my bday instead (but not there of course)

My 14 year old daughter has her belly button pierced and she trains with it. For the first 6 months, she taped it up with KT tape (Kinesiology tape). I told her from the start, she is not missing Jiu Jitsu because of a piercing that doesn't belong there, but she was insistent that she got it, so KT tape it is.

There is no doubt that it was uncomfortable for her to roll with it as it was still healing, and she whined about it and used it as an excuse to try to get out of Newaza on the days she was feeling lazy. Some day it might get ripped out of her belly from rolling, but I warned her about that.

She does have one and so far she is alright.

I personally has my "nipple" pierced for 20 years, but after falling in love with Jiu Jitsu, I decided to take it out forever because removing it for class five times a week was a pain in the ass, and it never seemed to want to heal up quite perfectly, so I just figured it wasn't meant to be and scrapped it. I originally tried taping it but that just ended with it almost getting ripped out.

You can always try to do what I did. I wanted a jiu jitsu tattoo badly, but I was worried it may get infected or not turn out as well due to rolling. You're supposed to not swim or sweat as much as possible when you get a tattoo as well I am told. Obviously, it doesn't make sense to take time off from jits to get a jits tattoo, so I decided to wait until I was forced to take a break from jits for a while. Last fall I ended up breaking my foot unfortunately which made me take some time off from the mats. During that time, I was able to get my tattoo that turned out great! Maybe you could just wait till something forces you to take a small break from training like I did. I think I waited patiently about 6 months. Hopefully if you do, it'll be later rather than sooner. :)

No piercings recommended at all

I decided the other day after having both my flared plugs ripped out of my ears at the same time to take them out before class. I think from now on I'll go the Martinez brothers route and put tape over the holes to avoid any snags when I roll without the jewelry in.
