Exclusivity: the Gracie way.
I wonder if Chael was asked same thing, or Keenan. Either way Garry has def earned alot of respect from me the past few weeks, and I love his interviews.
I was a fan of Garry's before this. Now I am a true admirer of him. Class act all the way. And obviously smart too. In my estimation he's just cementing his credibility off the mat by telling Ralek to fuck himself.
I wonder how many emails Ralek "Douchebag" Gracie is getting about this :)
Garry went up three notches in my book. Class act. Before I was merely an admirer of his game. I'm a huge fan now.
Eddie should set up a 30 minute, live-streamed seminar by Garry, followed by 30 minute rolling sessions with Geo, Boogey, Nathan, Denny, etc. ... and of course himself to top off the event. Playful but real rolling. $5. And do it like 1.5 hours before Metamoris 6 starts so it ends without interfering with Meta 6 but gives a symbolic and financial support to Garry for standing up to that B.S.
Wooow real black belt
I made a thread about this on the Underground last night and the great Joe Rogan has chimed in with his support!

Business is business...I don't begrudge Ralek for trying to do this...what I do begrudge him for is a his lack of business knowledge and his timing with signing Mafra if those rumors are true (causing him to pull out of EBI in order to hurt the EBI show). If he did sign Mafra only hours before the EBI show he shows a true lack of business ethics and if I am a competitor I see this as a huge Red Flag for his organization to be able to sustain itself long term. As far as his business acumen goes he is terrible. The guy was basically handed a silver spoon in this sport by having the Gracie name and he still cant seem to get it right. Unless you have established yourself as the go to 'de-facto' promotion for elite grapplers then you don't offer exclusive contracts. Most athletes will only sign these types of contracts if they:
A.)Have no other choice (limited options with other promotions) and not signing would negatively impact their reputation and finances.
B.) Recognize that the promotion has clearly established itself as the elite de-facto promotion. (clearly not the case at this stage as EBI, Polaris, Five etc. are all clearly in play and even putting up a superior product at this point).
C.) Are getting paid an exorbitant amount of money.
I don't believe any of these to be the case so in my mind Ralek has made another grave miscalculation that may end up costing him his promotion...not securing its future. Maybe try taking a few business classes??
BTW...those contract are bullshit in the US and mean nothing. A lawyer could easily get a non-compete contract thrown out (I know I've done it). These contracts are more scare tactic then legally binding agreements.
Glad to see that Garry was smart enough not to take the bait :)
I'm blown away that he's only 23. 23!!!!!!!!!!! It's nuts that he's so good at such an early age, such a good head on his shoulders, and humble. I look forward to his MMA debut.
Response from Ralek:

Credit to Aiseop for keeping /r/bjj up to date, wouldn't have seen this otherwise.
wow that's a really douchey response... Basically saying Tonon is an idiot and needs a "seasoned manager" to tell him that he's making a mistake. Oh, he's just training so hard he shouldn't have to worry about that stuff, just sign here and we'll take care of you.
What an asshole.
That response tells me pretty clearly that they just wanted to keep him from EBI. EBI is not part of the "exclusive competition network" or as cool as IBJJF or ADCC.
You need that seasoning when you got tons of broccoli.

I could understand having some exclusivity, you wouldn't want a grappler that you are paying 100k+ a year to get injured a few weeks out from a Metamoris, but having complete exclusiveness of a grappler isn't good for jiu jitsu.
That math makes zero sense to me. How the hell can he afford 140K for one athlete (an keep in mind he's signing multiple athletes) and only run 2 shows per year? Just using math if he had 10,000 PPV buys at 15 bucs a piece thats 150K right there and that doesn't include venue costs, production costs etc. Not to mention why...just why? Its not like EBI and Metamoris are on at the exact same day at the exact same time and its a race to get the best guys? From a business perspective I simply don't get it.
It seems like most people are guessing that the $140k figure far exceeds whatever the guaranteed money was. It could have even been calculated based on Tonon receiving points on the pay-per-views. I guess it's impossible for us to know what a realistic projection of his earnings would have been.
That 140k offer is probably the best case scenario which more than likely will not happen, mist just a number thrown out there by Ralek IMO
This would be 12 shows in a year, they have only done 5 so far all this time, probably if Gary competing in every event, maybe won every match, and all this other stuff Metamoris is planning, etc...
Offering an exclusive contract isn't wrong, he would be able to do IBJJF and ADCC, the issue is trying to get guys to pull out of EBI 3 that close to the show, if anything it would have been better to sign these guys after with more exposure from the EBI matches at this point
Glad he didnt sign the deal, even though i would have loved to watch him compete vs. Lauzon
He would have, too, I imagine. But it's the very close, if not actual, tortious interference that Metamoris pressured Tonon with. An ultimatum, drop EBI now to get our contract against Lauzon, but sign exclusivity. Mafra dropped out the day of the event; thank God Javi was available. Imagine if Garry had, too! It would have pissed everyone who watched the event. Metamoris was going after not Tonon but Eddie, specifically, EBI.
Massive respect for Tonon!!!
Thats how you make bigger this martial art.
Bold move by Garry. For him personally I am sure it cost him in the short-term, shows how much he cares about the sport and how much belief he has in its future.
