Honest opinion please: Extra drive for training at HQ worth it?

Hi everyone!

I appreciate you taking the time to read this and hopefully respond honestly. I live about 45 min from the 10th planet HQ, but only about 10 min from a different 10th planet location.

I'm not trying to start anything like one location is better than another, but you have to admit it would be cool to train with Eddie after making it through the intro stuff.

Can anyone with any kind of experience about this give me an opinion? I know members of satellite 10th planets can drop into the HQ, but I think it's only like once a month max.

Is it worth the drive? Any reason to chose one over the other?

I really do appreciate it.

I guess it boils down to this : I'm pretty new to BJJ and just want to know if it was you, what would you do?

I would go to whatever location you will make it to consistently and you can always stop by other locations when you have time.

pat's answer is always the answer, especially as a newbie who will need all the motivation to get there after a few weeks/months of getting his ego reduced. don't provide easy excuses for yourself.

As a beginner, Id personally say you can get your ears wet at either 10p school. There isnt a major advantage to one over the other until you get established in the sport.

. Once you have established your game, you can really focus on the instructors that have similar styles to match your game. Some will play into your style more than others. Right now, you need basics and more basics. Both are good. I would personally hit home school as much as possible and try to hit HQ 1-2 times a week.

Whichever you would be more consistent with.

I really appreciate all the replies. I guess I should clarify that I'm not totally new to BJJ. I trained for a year a few years ago, but am super rusty and never made it past white belt. Plus, I trained with a GI. Based on that I consider myself very new.

Has anyone actually trained with Eddie? Does he go super fast or really hammer details of what he's teaching? What's it like? I tried to research this and have seen him teaching his classes on YouTube, and it looks great. That's the main reason I would consider joining the LA gym and driving.

Also, I was told I could only drop in to the HQ once a month. If I could come once a week and train close to home 2x or 3x a week as well I would just do that and not waste the forums time.

Training with Eddie is great, but consistency is key. Facing a 45 min drive every night (or more if you hit traffic) will be an easy excuse to not go train. I would regularly train at whatever moon is closest and maybe pick one night a week to go train at HQ. It's going to take you some time to figure out the warm ups before you can attend Eddie's classes anyway.

Iam going to face the situation soon enough but mostly like ill drop in at the nearby costa mesa moon to get some classes and training in. learning the system is the most important part, and staying consistant. I havent trained with Eddie yet hopefully soon but there is certain warmups that have to be learned n practiced every day at class. Usually you would have to attend a good amount of fundamental classes before you can attend Eddie's class. Just focus on attending class n have fun. Welcome

So you're able to have an HQ membership and drop into a moon once or twice a week? Maybe that's the route I should go.

Yea you can, some of them offer discounts if you are a HQ member already but not all of them. I know Burbank was doing it.

Remember that Eddie teaches the advanced classes! You need to have mastered all the warmups before you can jump in, if I haven't misunderstood.

You're correct. I was told it could be like 1-3 months or more before I get to attend his classes

If you get a pro membership here you can watch MTS and you will see exactly how Eddie teaches in his classes. The youtube versions of MTS are chopped up so the instructional parts are missing.

If your training somewhere once or twice a week, you are basically a full member. I have a number of students at my gym that only make twice a week. If you are planning on training twice a week at a moon, join, don't just try and sneak in a bunch.

Get in somewhere and train. Take the local gym up on a free trial if they have one maybe?

And it's Amir for the win. 45minutes isn't shit to train with the innovator of the system.nthe answer to your question can be answered with a question for you. How dedicated are you. If it's 10 minutes from you, go to Costa Mesa. Moons are synchronized. Same techniques. If it's an official 10p, the instruction is legit.

Just to play devil's advocate, wouldn't a guard game in jail be overrated? I figure the only technique you'd really need to master is a rolling kneebar. Imagine you're in the showers and you drop the soap and a dude comes at you from behind...donkey guard would probably be the wisest investment in this case. But if a dude got you squared up, I guess you could make an argument for rubber guard.

Prison guard, the DA, electric chair, the escape formerly known as the escape from Alcatraz, Jailbreak 1, Jailbreak 2, Jailbreak 3...or just embrace it all and go to homie control

Master the warm ups first then come by to one of my advanced classes, or if you only have a couple of the warm ups mastered, come a night when we're doing those :-)

Or you can just come to a fundamentals class, I have awesome instructors :-)

Sean Bollinger and Jeremy Fields would sleep in their cars to train with Eddie. Geo and Boogey drive 2 hours to train with Eddie. How bad do you want it? Answer that first, then go with Amir's advice ;)
