Mormons & Meth: Where to train in SLC?

Hello, Planeteers. I'm leaving my ancestral homelands in the fire- and ice-wracked northlands and heading to the Great Salt Lake. I've been visiting for a few days, and I've already found 3 breweries, received a lecture form Mormon bartender, been offered "sweet electronics" in a meth-head's basement, and chased deer through a graveyard.

Absent from the abundant Shenanigans thus far: jiujitsu. Have any of you spent time in SLC? Where can I get the best nogi jiujitsu training? It seems like everyone out here wears the pajamas, with the majority of gyms offering at most one perfunctory nogi class per week. Jeremy Horn has a place I'll probably check out tomorrow, but it is a bit far. I'll probably be living in the Avenues by the University of Utah (where I got a job), but there doesn't seem to be anything at all close. It's almost like this place is crying out for a 10thP satellite...

It actually sounds like you're enjoying your time in SLC. Not the first place I'd pick to go to use valuable vacation time, but hey, maybe there's things there that I don't know about that could be awesome.

I'd have been wary that the "sweet electronics in my basement" line is a predator's way to lure adults the way "candy and ice cream in my basement" is how they lure children. Glad you made it out unscathed.

I have rolled at the Pit Elevated in Orem which is about 30 minutes south of SLC. Pretty solid instructors. Check em out.

Pat and Jack at Salt Lake Grappling Club are going to be the most open and conducive to 10P. Pat is probably the best fit for a guy you match up with size wise in Utah's nogi scene.

They used to have a podcast called "Whiskey and Chokes" but Im afraid they might have joined AA and switched to Aikido.

Come check out our gym, www.slgrappling.com. We are 100% no-gi and have been training 10th Planet techniques since 2005ish.

We have regular classes Mondays - Thursdays at 6pm with an open mat on Sundays at 4pm. We also usually have one or two bonus classes per week at Noon although those are not guaranteed. We are in East Millcreek. It is only about 10 minutes from the University of Utah and many of our members are students or faculty there.

Come on by! Everybody is super friendly and both of the owners were pulling hard for you when you went to ADCC China!

The podcast will come back. We've just been super busy so far in 2015.

Another thing: there is a no-gi club at the University of Utah that Pat and I coached and trained out of for years. They will be HIGHLY excited about your arrival at the U. Our students are the current officers and faculty advisor. The club is called SAMMA.

Thanks for responding, everyone. This sounds perfect. Hopefully I can make it to the Sunday open mat to meet you guys. I fly back to Alaska Sunday night, but I'll be moving here permanently in the beginning of August.

And SAMMA is exactly the sort of thing I want to be involved in.

As the former president of SAMMA, I hope you do big things.

I should mention, SAMMA is a little disorganized right now because most of the members spend so much of their training time on our mats. But, with a tiny bit of effort you could turn it back into the thriving club it once was.

Sweet! Looks like I need to get one last roll in before my ocean vacation. And yes...Utah powder is epic. If anyone want's to tour once the white stuff drops, hit me up. We usually dawn patrol before work and get a couple thousand vert. in before we head into the office.

Anybody coming through Utah in the winter should take Brad up on that offer. I grew up riding the Wasatch and raced a tiny bit in college. Brad can show you the good stuff if you like riding snow!!!

I've been told that I have "resting psycho face"; I don't think that's the case at all.

Awesome you're moving to SLC, Amir. When will you be in town to stay? I've been training at the Grappling Club periodically and really like it there: friendly crew, all nogi, and the location is perfect.

I'd also like to offer you a couple of proper geology tours; both climbing and backpacking. There are some features that I'd love to hear most about from an expert!
