This is no-gi btw despite the video thumbnail
If you click the box that looks like a roll film strip above the text box that your write in, you can paste in the youtube link and the video will embed. I'll do it real quick. Or you can also type in and then paste the youtube link in between the brackets ( the ][ part)

I like it.
Creativity and development in the NoGi game continues to amaze and delight me. I like this Mantis Guard. Can't wait to see more developments on the paths using it and it being effectively used vs good competition.
Is anyone beginning to feel the nomenclature of BJJ guards is almost reminiscent of of kung fu styles?
For example, the Five Animals of kung fu: Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon. According to wikipedia, there are countless more animals and styles https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Animals
BJJ guard names are like: Butterfly, Octopus, Donkey, Turtle, Rat, Spider, Worm, and here the most recent Mantis!
Just "shower thoughts."
Anyway, I am always impressed on the evolution and innovation of BJJ, good job Keenan!

Caio, isn't this the Terra guard you've been showing for years? If I remember correctly, isn't this on your 111 half guard dvd set?
Looks interesting. Seems like it would pair well with quarter guard. But it seems like it's really leaving your arm open for a rolling kimura.
Solid
Kind of. What he's talking about is what he called the Terra Guard, which is just RDLR/Spiral. What Keenan does here has a 2nd hand grip. Whether or not that should warrant this being another guard than RDLR/Spiral is another discussion and worth a debate. But what Keenan is showing here is definitely not exactly what Caio terra showed on his 111 half guard techniques dvd set.
I think the 2nd grip is part of Caio's DVD set. But my memory is rusty.
In my opinion, this is just a RDLR variation and not an entire system of moves. Similar to how Schembri would pull his leg up into what appears to be mission control but people just called it high guard or an omoplata set up. I think the nomenclature is great for learning and for coaching, but I don't think debating the name or originator of this "guard" is that big a deal. Some moves have different names in different schools. Names aren't that important. What's important is that it works.
Keenan replies
"I hear some people saying it's just rdlr. But it actually fits more into a deep half category. This is the most basic of the setups. Unfortunately I cant show all the secrets but the other sweeps and submissions from here are in a league of their own. Most of which would not be able to be set up from rdlr. It's instinct to see a position that looks familiar and be like "hey that's just this other position I'm familiar with!" But if you are experienced you know that their are so many variations and options from newer positions. I could go into detail explaining the differences on video but I don't have time and it would probably be ignored by the people I'm trying to explain too. But maybe in the future will show some of the other positions from Mantis. "
i just wanted to take this opportunity to reaffirm my love for Keenan. I would be his sugar daddy.
Carry on.
You hold onto the kimura, roll onto the back of your shoulders, then use your free leg to kick out. But that's just what it looks like is open, will have to play around with it. Also I'm sure it's not as open as it looks if this is one of Keenan's go to guards, he I'm sure has felt the counters enough to know it's balanced before putting it out.
For as much as Terra seems like a decent guy most of the time I sure didn't appreciate his dig at both Keenan and Eddie on FB.
I dig it!
what did he say? links?
Edit: Found it; it was probably in jest https://www.facebook.com/caioterrabj...90740104332873
One of the guys was trying it on me during live rolls and that's exactly what I went for. He was able to keep the grip on the leg for a sec but the kimura grip helped me kick out. He had only drilled it a few times though, we're gonna keep playing around with it.
another type of guard? my brain is already full! lol
I'm sure it was, Marc, but it just seemed a bit petty and out of character for him. Just a little weird. Still like the guy.
Does anyone use this guard? It's been floating in my head all day. Is it possible to get the grip with your top leg instead of your bottom; then use your free leg to hook the hip? I'm thinking x-guard type sweeps right into the ham sandwich.
Isn't it just Spiral Guard/Terra Guard?
Trust me if Keenan is putting it out there he already has a complete system he's been using and perfecting. If it works on the beasts at Atos you know it's for real. One of the most innovative guys out there.
I've been loving it
Looks worse than that rubberband guard or whatever that guy eddie bravo made up. :)
It wouldnt work on the street. I'd just eye gouge them or knee them in the face.
Bjj isnt even a real martial art. look into something that works like tai chi, or tro lodo fu.
Ameridote by Master Ken.

Sweet! Still a variation of spiral, though ;)
That's my gripe with what Keenan replied. I'm sure it actually does end up being more like a deep half thing like he says. But if you put up videos of just the very first in a long set of videos, and you call it Mantis guard and then get annoyed when people think it's basically spiral because "you haven't shown everyone the full thing yet" then either show people the full thing or don't call the first part the mantis guard.
Actually I would say it isn't really reverse de la riva or spiral at all
The key to RDLR is the RDLR hook, there is no RDLR hook so it can't really be reverse DLR
Just a thought
These are the types of things that dont really matter in jiu jitsu. Id still like to hear his philosophy on the position.
What qualifies as a RDLR hook? It's kind of like saying Ramey guard isn't half guard.
Looks more quarter guard to me
