I'm going to go ahead and say this...

After watching EBI 1, 2, 3, 4.... ADCC for the most part is a snooze-fest.

It was actually painful to watch Tanquino sit on Cummings for 10+ minutes and basically defend footlocks and the win on points in OT. (Edit to say: I can respect Tanquinho's game plan it just would have been nice to see him go after it more like Lepri was vs Tonon)

I actually stopped watching the Superfight because the stand up was horrible and painful to watch.

Lepri scored on Tonon quite a bit with guard passing and had some solid Kimura attempts so I don't feel I wasted my time during that match.

Lister v. Sanchez was more painful then Cummings v. Tanquino

Match of the day was Geo v. Glover followed by Tonon v. Danis


My suggestion: ADCC.... adjust your overtime rules and mirror EBI

I loved watching Tanquino shut down Cummings. I also loved watching Tonon get blown by with repeated guard passing. (I was rooting for Cummings and Tonon)

I agree that EBI is more fun to watch, but the competition is much higher in ADCC, and for me most of the matches are still great fun despite some goofy rules like guard pulling penalties.

The better grappler doesn't always win... That's the problem.

I thought for having 68/69 matches the majority of it was pretty damn awesome, but I agree, about the super fight completely and Lister V Sanchez. It was crazy to see Tonon get swamped like that but hey these are some of the best in the world, right? Cummings made that fight interesting to me by constantly attacking but respect to Tanquino (sp?) for wearing him down like that, played a good game. Cobhrina is a beast. And Geo vs Glover was def match of the day.

Send me Jordan Burroughs right now and he'll win ADCC 2017... 100%

1.5 years of techniques and defense and 6 months of strategy.

For sure... I can definitely respect the gameplan used to win matches and respect Tanquino's skill in escaping the footlocks.

It's the "game playing" that is frustrating to watch. At least at EBI 4 Soto was engaging and trying things.

If the player is going for it like Lepri was against Tonon then it's fun to watch. But when you watch Sanchez lay on Lister for the whole match.... Sucks.

Yeah when points matter, this approach would make a lot of sense.

He had a couple opportunities to do it vs Tanquinho and chose to stay seated... May have definitely effected the outcome.

He appeared out-classed to me. And the further into the match it went, the less effective his leg attacks were. I agree sweeps might have helped, but I'm just not sure any gameplan change would have altered that outcome. I think Tanquinho is just a superior grappler.

I'll have to check my video for the time but mid to late in the match Eddie had him in the Honey Hole/411/Game Over/Inside Sankaku and I thought for sure it was over but Tanquinho patiently waited for Eddie to attack the inside heel hook and spun to clear his knee.

For sure Tanquinho is more experienced and after watching Cummings' recent matches, I would say he's a bit too reliant on his leg lock game. With good leg lock defense and a superior game plan you can beat that guy pretty consistently. I actually think Soto could have beat Cummings but he decided to play the leg lock game...

I agree. I was pretty surprised when Soto just sat down on his butt and played footsie with Eddie. I was applauding his balls, but questioning his brains. I don't know if he could have won or not, but I think he played right into Eddie's game, which gave him a clear, quick, and decisive loss.

When the top guys compete this happens

Rafa blows through everyone at worlds, subs all the way to the finals and than him and Cobrinha have to inch there way against each other

Much like 2 years ago with the negative points for the finals matches these will more than likely by duds, ADCC needs to get rid of the penalty points from the start in the finals matches like yeara past, really screws up the matches

Not all of this is directed to you but some random thoughts. Keep in mind he didn't see a third of the matches, at least, and there was a tiny little thumbnail for a 2nd mat. So there could have been a lot of badass matches they didn't show. They put the big name guys up but that's not always the best matches.

ADCC is basically a rich guy's plaything. It's honestly not meant to be entertaining. The scoring system could be improved, but it won't be, and it's still pretty damn good. The best of any tournament with points that's out there. Honestly submission grappling just isn't that exciting, and it never will be. Eddie Cummings just said that Friday and it seems like a dick thing to say but I agree. This sport is just too complex and there's too much control involved for even most jiu-jitsu hobbyists or even casual MMA fans, let alone casual sports fans.

Budovideos basically does us all a charity by even bothering to stream it. I'd be surprised if they made any money on it and Budo Jake is really awesome for wanting to keep grappling history from being lost.

The superfight was terrible. Both of the guys are also old as dirt and one had a broken wrist and I think it was more of a nostalgia thing. Although yeah it was terrible. The senior superfights always are honestly. I've never seen a good one. I actually cut it off during the first OT. Bad follow up to Glover/Geo.

I was impressed with Eddie even in his loss. He lost -1 to 0 and actually managed to not get scored on in 15 minutes. Tanquinho is a beast and yeah he's a bit of a grinder/staller. He's called Stallquinho sometimes online. I agree it would've been nice to see him go for it more but honestly all due respect he's one of my least favorite grapplers in the game. But he's also in bed with Mackenzie Dern tonight so I doubt he cares what I think.

Lepri/Tonon was awesome. Really a masterclass match. It just shows how high the levels go at black belt. No disrespect whatsoever to Tonon but Lepri is just truly next level. He's also very underrated nogi and I don't want to sound too much like a traditionalist but I think this match shows the value of never forgetting the basics and just how powerful a solid tight passing game can be, and just how much in can open up in terms of sub opportunities. Also I think Tonon's most underrated quality is his defense. He's like Bill Cooper version 2. Everyone talks about his offense but the guy is almost impossible to put away.

Lister/Sanchez was terrible. Don't know what's up with Lister but I almost think he should hang it up.

Was really disappointed in Danis. He's fantastic but he looked terrible. I don't now if he was out of it, or injured, or just wasn't familiar Tonon's game (I find that hard to believe) but he didn't really get any offense in and seemed to look stumped in those leg knots and saddles.

One last note on Lepri/Tonon that I didn't say above and I'm sure I'm going to get roasted but whatever. Keep in mind I love both grapplers. And I was really rooting for Tonon to win his entire division. The final score was 10-0. You could've made Lepri/Tonon sub only and it wouldn't have changed the outcome. It was pretty clear that Tonon just isn't quite at the level to beat Lepri. Nothing wrong with that. Lepri is an ADCC vet, 3x world champ, 4x pans champ, and a 3x nogi world champ. He's a veteran in the prime of his life.

What I do like about having points (not in every tournament) is that as much as jiu-jitsu is about submissions, it's also about control and positional dominance, and keeping that control through transitions and movement. Scoring 10-0 on someone in 5 mins (the first 5 mins were no points) and having legit sub attempts against someone of Garry Tonon's caliber is insanely fucking difficult. If you can't seal the deal but you're able to dominate that much, part of me thinks it's silly to have an overtime where Tonon would get to start already on the back.

I love EBI rules for EBI and EBI is the most entertaining grappling event out there. But ADCC should stay as it is, minus the -1 for guard pulling (at least during all of the finals instead of the 1st half)

Totally agree. Right now at least. And Eddie hasn't even been a black belt for a year so no dishespect. I think it was a mixture of not having enough tools to throw at Tanq, Tanq being an incredibly cerebral grappler whose best strength is arguably his brain and knowing how to stay out of danger. And Tanq is just more experienced and has been around the block a lot. I thought Eddie looked good against Tanq. Never got passed or scored on and still was getting to his go-to attack positions.

Also I like that Eddie had the balls to say fuck it and take the -1 for pulling guard in OT. He pulled right away too. No hesitation.

I totally concur with everything you said Mike.

My only issue with the OT rules is that they favor the Wrestler... So many competitors adopt the strategy of making through the regulation and then battling it out for takedowns. Take note of Jacob Harmon coach a bunch of athletes from all different teams. Jacob isn't a sub grappler of any kind... He's a wrestling coach.

I think demonstrating your ability to escape vs your opponents ability to finish is much better measure of skill.
