Tore someone's ACL with the lockdown in competition.

I competed the weekend before last and put one of my opponents in the lockdown. When I went to sweep with the electric chair I saw him wince and tried to finish it. He ended up escaping and catching me with a tibia lock.

Today he posted on FB that he went to the doctor and apparently he has a torn acl, sprained lcl, and a damaged meniscus from that match and that he will have to have surgery. I feel bad because he is a super nice and very talented guy. I hate seeing anyone get injured especially in what seems to be a bit of a freak injury. Be careful with your lockdowns guys! They can apparently break shit too!

I guess this is a classic "winning the battle but losing the war" situation.

I wonder if he hurt his leg when he twisted out of that electric chair?

Not sure when it happened. My belt is perfect length haha. I like it long because it sets me apart and it causes some people to fixate or reach for it which helps me get into my sprawl/front headlock game. It's kind of signature of mine now lol.

Thank you brother. Those kind words mean a lot to me. I love competition and I love the thrill of victory but more than that I love BJJ and as a result of that I love people who do BJJ. The last thing I want to see is someone who shares the same passion that I have for our sport get injured and have to sit out for 6-9 months! In the Midwest there are not a lot of guys at the higher belt levels so all of us that compete often know each other and have known each other for years. Friendly rivalries are still in the end friendships and who wants to see a friend get hurt?

It's hard to see how it happened but I think you bent his leg at an angle his knee wouldn't turn in when you went for the electric chair. Freak accident I think. These things happen even just passing half guard when there's a lot of resistance especially in competition.

If someone hurts their knee in lockdown it's usually their own fault for turning to the wrong direction. It's nasty when it happens, but the guy on top should know better than to forcefully turn against it. It's not your fault, every one should be concerned about their own safety in a match.

He jacked his knee out when you had him in full electric chair extension. Either give up top position or tap at this point. No one well-versed in the electric chair is getting their leg out by beasting it like that. He won his battle. Don't feel bad. These things happen, and competition blurs the lines of our willingness to concede victories. He was at such a point, and chose his fight.

That's a good fair warning.

That sucks man, hate seeing people get hurt. I've had a couple guys come to the gym that have gone kinda berserk during electric chairs and tweaked their knees, one in particular who like yelled in pain and I let it go, scared the crap out of me, it can happen pretty fast. Nothing you could have done really, just a risk that can happen if someone fights the sweep super hard. Hopefully dude has a speedy recovery.

It's certainly not the first knee injury from an EC. You were obviously not being an asshole or doing anything unsportsmanlike. Like someone else said his approach of trying to beast out of it seems to be what got him hurt. Sucks, but I don't think you did anything wrong.

It actually looks like you let him out of it. Was that your sense of it?

I've stopped trying to finish electric chairs *in training* for this reason. In competition you gotta do what you gotta do. I understand feeling bad about it tho.

I'm an old dude, 44 and I competed last year at th IBJJF No Gi Worlds and I did same thing. Lockdown to an electric chair and he tried powering through with his leg and I heard and felt it pop. He yelled and match was over and he kept trying to go and I felt horrible cause these injuries are hard to deal with at my age with a career and kids and as much as I love BJJ I have to do these other things first and with the time out of work and not playing with kids plus cost of surgery and everything sucks. It messed me up pretty bad knowing he got hurt like that but as my coach said we all assume a risk when we step on the mat....

Why do you do that 'slap the mat' thing when standing (I saw you do it the last match you posted also)? I assume it's some trick to bait the opponent into a guillotine? Not sure you need to resort to something so awkward if that's your goal. You should legitimately work on your ankle pick and low singles to get your opponent to actually feel threatened by a low attack, such that he lowers his head for real. Worst comes to worse you can transition a failed shot directly into the half guard pull, or into a leg attack. It just seems like your current tactic gives off strong body language to your opponent that you're setting him up for something, and your wide open posture is leaving you vulnerable to a guard pass as soon as you go to the ground.

Yeah it's just something I do to get my opponents thinking. You're right I have a million things I need to work on. Constant improvement and progress is the name of the game!

I would say the biggest thing you should work on is taking a more aggressive posture. One thing I noticed from your matches is that even when your opponents do what you want, you're coming from so far away across your own body to lock the guillotine that they're able to see it coming and slip their head out, or just take you down and power through it. The wide open posture also puts so much weight on one foot that it negates your ability to counter a takedown with a submission attempt or guard pull, since by the time you regain your balance you'll already be on the mat and scrambling to get back to a neutral position. Check out Kron Gracie or even Denny, who will both basically walk their opponents down with their elbows folded, forcing the opponent into either shooting an easily countered double leg or cowardly retreating.

Last tourney I went to a guy had me in lock down and torn my meniscus sucks but I learned lesson from it!!! I don't blame him but if I did it to someone else I'd feel bad to, I guess lockdown is bad ass so remember this when in training and hopefully next time I can address the lockdown before it tears my knee again
