I know there's a poop joke somewhere in here, but when I compete, I have a major adrenaline dump, and it usually takes me a good while to bounce back. I'm even still in recovery mode when I step out for my second match. I usually place in the tournament, but feel I could place 1st a lot more, if I could get it under control. Thoughts?
Some people this never leaves them...the more you compete though, the more it should dissipate.

The most important thing is to realize that with focus and practice you can learn to control those systems in your body that are reacting that way.
There are visualization and meditation practices you can do out of competition to prepare. Recognize that for you, a competition is less about you doing jiu jitsu against another guy, than it is about you battling with your own physiology to keep it under control.
Better control and mindfulness of your breathing is the beginning of all that. Control of heart rate, control of thoughts, control of adrenal glands. Control of everything begins with the breath.
I'm sure the effect will lesson over time if you jsut keep competing. The more you compete the less it will get. Just know that there are tools techniques and practices you can use to actively conquer this demon.
Let me put it to you this way. If you actively train to be mindful of your breathing with just half as much effort as you put into Jiu Jitsu it will go a LONG way to changing the way you compete. Mastering your breathing can't be as hard as getting a purple belt, right?
I find my nerves are at their lowest, when I feel like I've trained the hardest for the event that I can. Otherwise, my nerves are my weakest link in competition. Need major improvements.
Maybe you should try to catch moves that are 2-3 steps away and hustle for them... that way the energy that u create goes somewhere... maybe u will tire less. U know ur game but what i mean is in the guard going for the triangle , go through armbar omaplata and then the triangle... but focus from the start on the triangle , does that makes sense for u John?

I personally went even the other way at one point. People were telling me I was way to relaxed like in class. I had to work on getting that back. Focusing on mindset, a pre-competition que or reset was my answer to fix that. Like everything, competing is something that must be trained. I have beat some guys in comp (especially late in my blue belt) that I probably couldn't have tapped in class, simply because I had competed much more and have trained extensively with competition as the focus.
I'm battling the same thing. I can feel awesome in the gym, but lie there immobilized and beaten on the comp mat.
As an anxiety related response, the first thing is to accept it, even embrace it, not be afraid of it or stress about it. Try to even enjoy the sensations if possible. Accept it may well happen any time, and keep going anyway, not letting it stop you. In time, like that, it'll lessen and lessen.
This is great advice. When I first started playing music on a stage in front of an audience, it made me anxious. But to be honest, I enjoyed the feeling. It's like when you're on a rollercoaster going up that first hill. These days when I get on stage I miss that thrill a little because it feels very old-hat. It's still loads of fun, but it doesnt give me rollercoaster-belly anymore.Quote:
