do u guys use the jeff glover style deep half? thoughts and experiences?
it seems loose the way he does it, at least i feel tighter going 'lockdown, electric chair,deep half if electric chair fails while keeping my lockdown, then when im ready dothe out the back door deep half back take
dunno if i worded that well, personally i prefer electric chair, calf crank, all else fails electric chair sweep
but im giving the deep half lots of work, trying it out and so far so good
Yes deep half is being incorporated into the system, the Homer Simpson sweeps are huge.
Yeah Jeff Glovers deep half is amazing (though i don't use it yet) But i have rolled with guys that use it all day....
I do! I want to say that the school he came from (Paragon) popularized that style of half guard. It's a great position with a ton of options. It's a great seg way into other guards and positions.
Deep Half is amazing for just about any transition you can think of...you can sweep, take the back, enter into 50/50 guard, X-Guard, sit up guard to De La Riva, etc. It's all about how creative you want to be and what kind of openings and indicators are present when you're there.
And even though lockdown might be great for keeping things tight, if you're good at playing loose, your going to control your opponent just the same. Plus there's like a million lockdown counters that open a guy up for looser guard sweeps so you better learn everything because everything has a counter.
Yes sir the deep half is $$$. "The Pipe Layer" is a great teacher as well! After training with him once, he showed me "half" of his game set-ups etc... One of my more favorable trips ;) As far as the "looseness" his style is more about moving "you" to/around them. So keeping the leg secured vs locked down allows you to move vs moving them. Going out the backdoor they sit their hips, then simply rotating yourself into them gives you the sweep! vice versa etc... Hope that helps ;)
I didn't even really want to delve into the deep half but once I became aware of the position it just kept popping up during live rolling. So now I have to learn to either capitalize on it or just get arm barred.
Keep the outside arm tucked close to your ribs. Any movement you make with that arm should be close to your body. The further your arm veer's away from the more susceptible it is to attack.Quote:

Deep half guard is badass. I've been having luck with it when someone gets my back. As he tries to get the hooks in, I underhook the leg and push it up to my shoulder. Out the back door or Homer every time.

and the homer simpson sweep is amazing that they named it that, i will have to try and resist the urge to shout WOOP WOOP WOOP WOOP when im doing it on my students
can someone post or link to a video on the homer simpson sweep? I get the general idea, but there are some little positioning questions I have, especially involving where your weight should be, and where the other guy's should be. Guys in my gym hit it all day, every day though
Been watching both ryan hall and jeff glovers videos on deep half. so far so good.
ive been working it a bit in class with success, so far im mainly taking their back or doing the homer simpson.
now, one thing ive learnt from both dvd and from trial and error is when im in deep half.... you never ever want the opponents foot of the leg im trapping with my legs, on the floor. if his foots of the floor, he cant find balance and cant escape easily at all.
ive managed this nicely while keeping the lockdown, even with the correct angle and feel secure. also fine without lockdown but i like to stay in the lockdown to be able to switch back to electric chair if i can.
also
that foot that cant touch the floor. if i hook under it with my inside leg, i can take him on to his back (simular to homer simpson pass)
and if i hook it with my foot on my outside leg, i can go out the back door easily and take the back.
both of those were shown on both dvds.
time to try them out and see how they work and then back to the drawing board to perfect them.
i like that its impossible to get crushed in deep half (almost)
The waiter sweep is a strong option to use in contrast to those listed above.
i use deep half alot. its great.
i use deep half a lot, either home simpson or just make something up...it is becoming my favorite position.
good position. Nice option from quarter guard.

I have one guy who sucks me into a triangle everytime I go to deep half with him. SUCKS!!!
You need to keep your arm (the one between his legs) close to your body, and put your hand under his leg.
