My wife trained under Brandon in Decatur and was there for several years. Competed a good bit and all. Went to California and all that jazz. Eddie may remember her as Ziggy or Catie. Wanting to get her back into it and start for the first time myself. Never done any type of martial arts or even sports. Any tips? I don’t feel like I get much from YouTube.
I’ve wrestled with her quite a bit and she’s tried to show me some stuff I just power out of it too easily.
Just start.

Just physically showing up and putting yourself on the mat is the hardest and most important part. Take action and stop talking about it.
If I had a nickel for every time someone talked to me about wanting to start Jiu Jitsu and not actually doing it... well I could buy an ice cream sundae or some shit. The older and wiser I get the more I realize "actions speak louder than words"... words mean pretty much nothing because the majority of modern humans are in all sorts of personal denial and delusion. If they are deluding themselves of course they will delude others.
I would also say, that unless your wife is bigger and stronger than you, you will be able to power out of stuff. Every 20 lb difference is like a belt level. When you start jits, roll with guys your size or bigger and see if you can still power out.Quote:

I won matches in expert absolute giving up 100 pounds when I was just a blue belt so I simply don't believe that its as straight forward as "20 lbs= a belt". That said, you powering out of some things against someone weaker is kinda an independent factor to you starting training. You’re exceptional Mr. Debes, hehe. The OP’s wife may be super tiny compared to him or her game not as developed. I’m encouraging the OP to test his power against equally strong and similar weighted folks...or an up and coming blue belt like you were back in the days. I doubt he will be able to just easily power out of things.Quote:

Not only did she make it to Blue... she had some of the best killing instinct I've ever seen. She was a SAVAGE competitor. I've for sure seen her break at least 2 arms in competition. That's just what I recall off the top of my head. lol
You do have to account for ballistic breaking ( very fast breaks ) and tap when you feel she could have gotten you if she pressed harder ( like as she would in a real fight ) but that comes with exp. in submissions. I could imagine someone getting pissed from dudes powering out of stuff and not acknowledgin the submission... talking from exp. that pushed me to presue chokes cus sometimes breaking someones arm is a dick move if you just wanna prove a point but putting them to sleep is totally acceptable by the main streem ... ;)Quote:
