One Year of training in the books and this is what I think of Jiu Jitsu so far.

I know nobody gives a fuck but a year ago today i started training in Jiu Jitsu. Now I havent trained everyday like alot of guys mainly just twice a week. I remember walking into class at this really talented Purple belt of Carlos Machado and absolutely feeling humbled. You see I've done martial arts for a while. I'm young, fast , flexible, have great kicks and was always the top of the karate league. However doing that first month of Jiu Jitsu was the most humbling experience ever.

Now before I got to class I read Eddie's books. Fortunately about 4 months in I got to tenth planet jj.com and met Mr. Brandon MC from Decatur which led to a lot of good things including meeting Mr. Eddie Bravo and Mr. Chris Herzog (wish I would have got a pic with Herzog). Me and Brandon are friends and thats cool. It seems like everyone from the karate world was stuck up arrogant like Mr. Mike Stone, Joe Lewis kind of guys. But the Jiu Jitsu guys are humble as fuck. That means a lot. See you can't just do katas and get promoted in Jiu Jitsu. You got to roll and train your mfn ass off to achieve what you want. Thats what i want.

Overall I am happy with training. Never have I been challenged like I have in Jiu Jitsu. Never have I wanted anything more than being successful in Jiu Jitsu. Its my life. Its all I think about. Thank you mother fn Jiu Jitsu. Peace :)

Very cool, Don. One year ago the this month I started training, too. I come from a traditional martial arts background and, as much as I love the katas/forms, etc., I've never had to work as hard as I have in jiu jitsu but it's well worth it. (There's some humble traditional martial artists out there, but there's some jag-offs, too.)

Jiu Jitsu...it's a hell of a drug.

Stick with it Don, it's a very personally rewarding art, but sticking with it is the key. I've been doing it for going on 10 years now, and no regrets whatsoever...i don't even regret my knees exploding.

In other news, your avatar pic disturbs me on many levels.

Don's not going anywhere. Once you get in in your system, it doesn't go away.

Don thats awesome, milestones are important, the same weekend as my seminar in Decatur was my 26th year in the martial arts and it was awesome teaching in a school that was very similiar to the one I started in. And don't worry about a pic brotha....photoshop is a wonderful thing ;) and I'm sure I'll be back there again. Congrats!

I would have to say my first year was very humbling. The best part of 10th planet are the people who help you out on a daily basis.

Rock out on the year. I personally have trouble estimating my time training due to several injuries ive had to to small breaks for but its right around a year of actual mat time. Can't wait to train with you again bro and see how much we've evolved.

I been training in traditional jiujitsu for about 7 years now, when i started coming across some mma guys they kinda looked at me like my art was a joke so i associated that with bjj and was resentful. I eventually earned my respect thru sparring and rolling I came across a few guys from lotus bjj in Astoria Queens and was amazed at how humble they were. That along with reading Eddies books made me realize theres so much more to jiu jitsu than the stand up game. I used to be real stubborn about learning ground techniques even when we crossed trained with wrestlers and judo guys all i cared about was getting to my feet now i enjoy going for subs.

Yea I hear you i missed a month of training myself do to sickness. Im sure you have evolved way better than me. I only do good when i can get people in my guard. Got to be a way to pull guard everytime. harder to pull guard when you start off on knees and thats where we start usually.

I started having trouble getting good guys in my guard, they will start with a knee up or something. Pull deep half to ministomp to lockdown and then work a deep ass lockdown. I didn't even start using that Eddie seminar the way I should have been until just recently. Sometimes it just takes time to click from what I've found out. Your rubberguard was tight and controlling as shit back in June though man, you just needed to fight the right fight to make your life easier.
