South Paw, Why Me?

First of all I'm hammered so stay with me here. I'm right handed. But I fight south paw! Now this has a lot to do with the first Martial Art I studied was JKD and guy taught me to stand with strong side forward. This has ruined me! (or has it) I can kick great with both legs but naturally my right leg is a little bit more cordinated than my left so Im constantly having to switch step to throw that rear leg shot. Now my Right jab is natural and feels good. My left cross feels good. My right hook feels good. With all that said my Professional MMA buddies are telling me to switch to orthodox stance because of me being right handed. Now my left jab sux, my right cross is powerful, my left hook sux. My foot work is gonna have to be changed. BUT my rear roundhouse is death. What should I do? Change to orthodox and just keep working on it till it feels natural? Or stay with southpaw even though Im right handed And just switch step when I want to throw a rear roundhouse? Sorry for all the mispelled and horrible typing. I told you the reason. Gotta figure out what works best for you. My own opinion is the jab is the most underated punch in MMA and a really strong Jab will win you more fights then any other punch. There's pro's and con's to both and you will need to eventually be able to throw any punch from any stance anyway.

sounds like you need to work on your power/speed from your left side. if you are already comfortable in a south paw stance, i wouldn't switch it up. that can work in your favor since most people are not accustomed to fighting quality lefties.

I know guys that load there strong hand to the front. So go with what you are good at.

Gonna be knockin fools out with a jab. Honestly man South Paw isn't that uncommon. Around half the people I spar are so I'm used to it. Go the way you feel more deadly, and then switch it up if it isn't working... And yes sir, roasted duck is on the menu tonight boys! War Damn Eagle!

sounds like you're already more than half way to being deadly from both sides, why turn back? work on whatever you're weak on from either side. Both stances have their advantages and being able to switch up on a guy who's trying to get a read on you is also an advantage.

i had the same problem i know it sounds stupid but i will literally stand in whatever stance i wanna practice on and jab cross hook etc i may look crazy fighting air but it has helped now when sparring i switch and i feel good in both ..my kicks from the othodox need some more work but everything else is fine...and i love using the jab

i drill both stances on a heavy beg so i switch lots during sparring and fights, i thought thats how Maui Thai works?

yea i switch up a lot when kickboxing. the problem is when we just do boxing (which I seem to suck compared to the boxers we have) . Just trying to get some foot work down and rhythm. Im not a big puncher I throw a one two and get out but all that hooking and uppercutting/ Bobbing and weaving.......aint for me. More of a kicker and lets avoid the clinch. If I get taken down I'll work a bit of rubber guard. Probably pulling guard isn't the best from the clinch but Aoki does it (I'm not Aoki I know). Ah well still much training to be done.

Just like the others have said... a lot of right handers fight southpaw. I have heard people will do this so they don't have all their eggs in one basket:rolleyes:

Well I'm a taekwondo guy and I don't either. This is nice to know. I feel good now that I've gotten yalls(best southern word ever) opinion.

personally i think its a necessity to train on your off side, eventually. i find that when i figure out my uncoordinated side and force myself to work with it, i pick up on important technical aspects that i wouldn't pick up on off of my natural side because it tends to be controlled by muscle memory and requires no thinking to utilize.
it seems to me that drilling off of my uncoordinated side makes my technique on both sides improve because the key points of a technique become very obvious when you're working on a side that doesn't feel natural

Raymond daniels has a huge influence on how i spar. long distance kicking and in and out punching. Plus i have a year of jiu jitsu experience so that is also a add on help.

OK, as a JKD guy... I've got to tell you to stay strong side in front. Sparring, I feel it works best because the power is in front and has a shorter distance to travel. Also more distance increases power, so having your weakside back gives it more distance to travel and more power. As far as grappling, I switch to orthadox. I also have a background in boxing so I'm used to orthadox, and when there's no striking involved I prefer this stance to set up my takedowns.

Im for the most part right handed (i taught myself to be ambidextrous) and i fight in a southpaw stance. The more i do it the more comfortable i get with each aspect of my stand up. Ive had alot of fighters tell me i needed to switch to an orthodox stance too but im not comfortable enough in my stand up to do that so ive stuck with the southpaw stance. I like it alot better personally :)

agreed. i trained boxing for a few yrs and reached a but into muay thai when i had the chance. my boxing coach, former olympian alternate, was always very keen on having one stance and sticking with it. most ppl say the same thing, but i tuely believe working both stances is the way to be, everyone has a strong side, but why not make the weak side stronger too? i find myself starting orthodox and lettin my opponent feel comfortable, and then when i feel hes figuring me out, i switch stance and constantly circle outside his jab, often land rear round kick to inside leg or body, or left cross or combo of both, w,e works. anyways i say use that strong right jab 1000000 times per spar/fight, but get ur left up there too, and get used to switching stances when it suits u best. thats just my insight tho

also i forgot to mention, if the guy is a lefty, then i usually start lefty, and witch to orthodox when hes figuring me out. same as before, just corresponding stance with his

Im gonna go with learn to box orthodox and go from there. I think any fighter can benefit from pure boxing, and since your right handed, the other guys might be right. Try switching and working on creating a boxing base from orthodox. Step out of your comfortzone until you feel comfortable then make your decision. My left jab and hook are way stronger now and were built from scratch and my defense and counters are strong as well. In my opinion it is all about footwork. Takes forever to get, but when you do(which i havent) everything slows down and your defense will become easier giving you more confidence. Then you have the option of hitting them with a completely different style left handed.

It is way more practical to switch in mma than boxing. But being able to box your ass off in mma is never a bad thing.

Try bas rutten's work out, I used to have the same problem bc my dad taught me boxing and he is left handed so thats how i picked it up. Make sure you throw ur left jab and hook with intense hip motion. Develop your lat muscles and also your triceps and trap muscles. This will make you devastating either way, and also will increase coordination and footwork, providing you with new weapons. Also try pulling ur right hand in a reverse motion away from ur left jab to develop hip motion.

22-28 of January? We've actually been talking about getting up there. Really want to but with Naga Feb 12 I'll have to check my funds. It can definitely be a possibility. Actually it sounds exactly like what I need before conquering Naga. Stayed in a borderline crack hotel last time so probably just a repeat of that, like 40 bucks a night. Yeah dude, everyone down here is fucking PUMPED about Auburn...We'll not about half the bammers. At buffalo wild wings last night I almost got into it with a bunch or them for yelling "roll ducks." I was like "that makes no fucking sense, ducks float, they swim, they waddle. They don't fucking roll!" Either way as a lifelong Auburn fan I'm hella pumped. Given the current state of Auburns basketball situation I'm not following too much but can emphasize with your situation. Either way man, how much would it be to train up there for a couple days? If I'm just up there i'd wanna get some 2 and 3 times a day if possible so i'm not just twiddling my thumbs in the day.

Hell if you are there the same day i am Ill train with you all day. Im sure brandon would too that guy that guy that guy thatcha guy you know he do no gi one day. fuck. anyhow we could get some good training in. if you were thinking of stayin in a hotel to train more than one day id have to think about training more than one day as well. godamn it training . train like motherfucking bruce lee on a movie set with betty ting pei or whatever her name was he was pounding at the time of his death. its the truth he was doing it lol. anyhow we will figure something out. if you cant make it thats cool.
