I personally have notice a big jump in RG use by non-brotheren... Mostly Lock-down and Mission Control. Can you verify the same in your region?

Definitely. I see a lot of guys pull into mission control and then look a little lost. A good bit of lockdown used too by students of surrounding schools.
Yup, lots of misuse and unsuccessful Rubber Guard attempts, only really seen a few guys outside of the 10th Planet system be very good with Rubber Guard
So true... Weak Mission, CRUSHING lock-downs with Zero movement or control (other than holding on for dear life) Those are our converts though guys... As Chris said its a serious lack of reps and or missteps. I ALWAYS put a business card in those guys hands after the Tourny ;)
Its always fun to hear them refer to it as "high guard" and its like the purposely avoid using the 10pjj teminology, so much so that it overly obvious and very funny. I actually heard a guy yelling "great now your in stage 1" instead of mission control at a local tournament a few months back.
^ Was that during my third match at the last one? I remember I swept my guy from my weak side half guard into his full guard (fail) and hearing the other guy's coach yelling: "High guard! High guard!" The guy grabs his ankle and I hear: "Not THAT high guard!" Haha! I still have the vid and I think you can hear him yelling. :)
Its truly amazing that they use it, SORT of train it but still fail to give it the proper credit. It is awesome to see the reaction when we (As a bad ass Team) of 10Th Planet Warriors walk into a venue flying colors! Its an exciting time my friends. We, truly are, the Revolution!
A lot of people are just doing a weak mission control as a setup for the omoplata or gogoplata without properly trapping the isolated arm. These are the same people who in 1 or 2 more years will be posting on other message boards saying, "That RG shit doesn't work. Anybody with good posture will just yank out of it."
No 10th Planet gym in Ireland I think so I can't really get to grips with it all as easy as you guys.. All I have to rely on is my books and some videos I've seen. When I do use my lockdown in my traditional BJJ classes they don't know what's happening and think they have an easy opportunity to pass my guard, that's when I use one of my unorthodox scramble sweeps or a 10th Planet sweep into their side control. Then they try it on me and don't know what I'm doing so just squeeze my leg between theirs... They think it's some kind of leg lock.
I think most people know what the Rubberguard is now, but dont know how to use it, I can usually pull it off 3-4 times at training, when the others try it, they don't know how and just grab their foot, putting no pressure on my collar so I can usually easily pass into Side Control. What I've had trouble with is Twister Side Control, especially while wearing a gi. None of them ever roll into me the way the book shows it! Got someone's back today and cinched in the Anaconda. My coach said to me afterwards "That's a nice rubber guard you have there." I felt like bursting out in laughter, but refrained, just in case he decided to choke me out...
Haha good story Kevin : ). I kinda had some fun with learning it in a traditional school myself. I used to train with a Royler Gracie blackbelt back in Missouri and there was me and one other guy who was freakishly flexible and who was a bluebelt. After seeing him do some awesome stuff that nobody else could do,( he rolled against a brownbelt and recovered guard about five times with the jailbrake escape every time the brown thought he passed the guard lol) I started asking him about that specific style and i found out about Eddie's Rubber Guard. The following years i had trouble finding knowledge on it, even the bluebelt guy didnt like showing it much, so one day my old teacher was like " alright today ill teach the class ANYTHING you guys wanna learn." and i was immediately "ANYTHING" lol so I asked to teach a Royler Gracie blackbelt a basics of the rubberguard class! He was cool though and tough it, to bad everyone in class had to drill it to and only the smaller half of the class had the correct flexibility lol
I live in Kansas City with no local 10th planet. the closest school is about 3hrs away. We train all 10th planet tech. in our grappling classes and we go to the seminars when they are available. with that said the last tourny we went to we dominated with the 10th planet techs. we were openly calling out the moves and getting laughs from the other grapplers. At one point i yelled out to a teammate to get to the dogfight and 2 other guys on the sideline started mocking it. it made me mad and i laughed at the same time. Mad for the disrespect and i laughed because they got annihilated. It sucks not having an official place to train, but we try to do our best. We follow the books, dvd's, videos, and seminars. All while trying to stay as true to the spirit and teachings as we possibly can.
Lots of Twisters being done in tourneys recently also.
Ya the same holds pretty true to the NW. I have not seen to much successful use of the system, but they are trying.
This is good stuff! Keep posting your stories! Although it's sad to hear that alot of you have no official school to trian 10TH Planet at it's good to see you all on the forum. This is the ultimate learning resource if you dont have a Moon near you. That is AWESOME news! Keep fighting for it guys! Hopefully we"ll be in all 50 States before long ;)
Damn I love the 10th Planet community! See what happens when you get a whole bunch of happy people playing a wonderful sport with an OPEN MIND TOWARD ITS EVOLUTION! Hah! :D
Jason,
You are 100% correct my friend. This IS a community/family and we're all here to help each other grow. As for myself, you may all contact me via email, facebook, txt or phone (EST business hours please) and if I'm available I am willing to help as far as techniques, drills, set-ups and all knowledge in general! I'm speaking for all the other Moon coaches as well I'm sure! If I can't help, I'm sure I can get you to the right person!
Train hard!
Imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Herzog, hah at the "stage 1" thing. That hurts my head!
And I would agree that the 10th movement is definitely affecting everyone in the grappling game. However, hardly ANYONE that doesnt drill the hell out of it gets it right. I mean its getting bad. The BJJ guys are having to at least pick up some of it. Grappling-wise I see it a lot, but MMA-wise, i see it ALL THE GD TIME!
You'll go to one of these shows and you can bet your ass you'll see a few knuckleheads pulling mission or even to new york and looking absolutely lost then losing position. I hate it because i feel like its a poor representation of us and the system. These guys pull mission in a fight, do absolutely shit with it, and the folks watching are like "yeah that rubber guard stuff doesn't work". I try to educate any time I can. Hell I cringed when BJ used it last night...just wanted him to do something with it, if he was going to go to it.
with his insane flexabillity i could have done alot with it..he didnt seem that hungry for the win
Local tournament a few of us where in this last spring you saw some of the hate, lots of looks and comments. After we destroyed the no-gi division and had one of our guys dominate the absolute no-gi taking out a couple blues, a purple and a black belt in judo we had a few people come up and start asking questions regarding where we train and how we learned what we have with 10th Planet. Recently had a instructor of another school inform me we could not come roll at his school as we are part of a competing team. (best part of this being some of his students have rolled at ours)
Its been a lot of work up in North Dakota to bridge the gap with the jiu jitsu world, especially for 10th Planet. Thanks to guys like my instructor Sensi Reis, Derek Stewart, Eddie, Denny and more we've been able to take everything we can from Seminars, Videos, Books and keep working the reps over and over. Now we are starting to see more and more guys roll in the doors including people from other BJJ gyms in the surrounding area's. I know I can speak for the entire gym when I say we are all proud of our 10th Planet patches.
hahahaha thats a awsome story....^^^^^^^^^^^ thats kinda childish that you guys got banned from the other school
I have noticed a lot of Lockdown use. Also, this weekend I went to a competition and one of the guys in a higher division tried rubber guard and popped his knee. The ref stopped it and wouldn't let him continue because he yelped.
