Its really not that big of a deal. its jiu jitsu.

*Note** - I do not intend nor have i ever wanted to offend anyone in any way shape or form. just kinda think something is going from a great match to out of control hype.

So we all know about Eddie Vs. Royler at the 2003 ADCC. Eddie won of course.

IMO: it was an amazing match and a good example Jiu jistu by two outstanding people.

However, yes Eddie won the match, but it sometimes seems like everyone blows it out of proportion. when i hear about it people mainly focus on the fact that "a Gracie was beaten in Jiu jitsu." or "Eddie bravo beat a gracie then "Retired" from competition fighting." or "Eddie Bravo beat Royler and wont fight him agian because he knows he'll lose."

For what ever the hype and reason is, its stupid and pointless to me to make a huge deal about it.
IMO: Yes eddie beat a gracie, but its not exactly anything to throw a parade about. Royler made a mistake and got caught, or Eddie went for it and got lucky, or eddie caught him by surprise.

what ever the reason, whether it be mistake, skill, or luck. That's jiu jistu. Its a game of human chess, you or your opponent make a move and you both have to react to the move with your own move to stop the advancement and defend.

Everyone seems to focus on the fact a gracie was beaten, or that eddie won the match.
I know for a fact I cant beat either of them, if I got lucky and surprised them with a move, its not a big deal either. Alot of legendary black belts still get tapped on a regular basis. That's jiu jitsu, to act and react to the problem in front of you.

but from my view, my own opinion, yes eddie beat a gracie, eddie is a great grappler, as well as royler, but i could care less that a gracie was beaten. its not that big of a deal. But I myself would like to see a rematch just to see People of that high caliber experience in a jiu jitsu match. jiu jitsu at its finest.

What about a Royler being beaten by a brown belt? Being submitted by an American ?

I could care less what the race is, or the rank. im sure BJ penn has fought up in class and beaten or given a good match. some poeple have good approaches and strategies. its all jits.

Because I really like Eddie and I think its fuckin awesome.

doesnt matter the rank or origin. its like living in the U.S. as a citizen. doesnt matter what your background is, your age, sex, or views. we're all Americans.

If you don't care at all why would you bother to make this post :S it confuses me when people say they could care less about something but then take time out of there day to write a big post about it. I could care less about football but I'm not gonna sit around and make a post asking why anyone else cares.

Touche`, very well played my friend. lol eh, idk, just wondering why all the focus is about a gracie being beaten and not the actual match itself. Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza beat Roger gracie. and if i remember right Jacare' Got his arm broke and won by points i think. Didnt really care who won, just loved the entire match. it was an awesome fight.

Well we are all humans and on any given day any one can be beaten. We all bleed!!!!! I realized that after being in combat for 15 months in Iraq. Whether it is grappling or stand-up at any given time any one can lose.

I can see when it first happened that it was a big deal, but these days gracie's get beaten all the time, just like everybody else. The match holds it's historical purposes, mainly in relation to 10th planet. With all due respect the victory is a big reason why today Eddie Bravo IS Eddie Bravo and not just another black belt in the states. With that being said he probably would have still created this system and it probably would have gained notoriety and the victory over Royler certainly doesn't hurt his image

I mean I understand the hype about the wint - AT THE TIME - its just like MMA back in the early 90's it was mainly about "Whose style was superior to others." in present day, everyone knows the same techniques and moves. many are good at striking and ground fighting. so in stead of it being what style is better its more "who's more conditioned" and "who's more focused."
And I fully agree with Ari Hooper, everyone bleeds and can be beaten at any givin moment. Ari, Im a military brat, honestly, Thank you for all you do, no grappling match or fight will ever stack up to what my dad, you, and millions of others do daily.

I just think the focus has kind of gotten misdirected and has focused entirely on the fact a gracie was beaten and not the actual art itself.

well its not just the peoples fault, its the media. Eddies first book mastering jiu jitsu uses the victory as a selling point. I believe it says something on the line of "for the first time ever, eddie bravo reveals his secret techniques he used to defeat royler gracie" or something. Whether that was the publishers idea to market the book like that or eddies is a clue to me, I do know he was not completely happy about that book in general though.

I agree that is mor eof a media thing, Dont get me wrong, I've bought eddie's book "Mastering the Rubber guard" and I also believe that Eddie is an amazing jiu jitsu fighter and im not taking anything away from him as far as skill and know how at all. It's just, Eddie beat Roger, whoop de doo. Can I do I beat a gracie, or eddie? 7-10 times more than likely hell no because their game is on an entirely different level than mine. give me about 5 or so years and I promise I probobly can give either a good workout. but int he reality of it even if you have the greatest grappler in the world against the worst. 9-10 times the novice guy will be beaten like Whiteney Houston. However even for a legend. It only takes one mistake to lose. one little slip. If I fought brock lesner Ya im gonna get killed, but all it takes is one good punch, one lucky shot, maybe one perfectly timed parry and throw, and guess what, he'll go down like everyone else will.
I'm sure eddie gets tapped now and then. it doesnt make him any less of a grappler. S^&T happens.

Just to give a bit of perspective it would not be 9 times out of 10 they would beat a regular grappler it's more like 1000 times out of 1001 and one they would win. I still stick to my first point, for some who doesn't care about this match or who won or what ever you have really given a lot of time to this thread, it shows how much you don't care lol.

honestly dont care that people get the hype that eddie beat a gracie, just wondering why its been dragged on and on and on. theres a bunch of fights i'd like to see, wouldnt really care who won, Just want to see jiu jitsu on that high of a level.

I don't think it really is getting dragged on. From what I've noticed besides this particular post most of the time when people bring up this fight it's usually just because people are bad mouthing Eddie and 10th planet by saying stuff like "The only reason he's famous is because he got lucky and beat a Gracie" I think they only reason it's been bought up on this forum at all is because people are excited to see the rematch.

Anybody can win on any given day... but that's what competition is about -who can be more ready and more focused on THAT day. And THAT day, was Eddie's day; no doubt.

Here's an outsider's view: I'm a Tae Kwon Do/Judo guy with a passion for the ground game. I found Ari and Submissions101 on Youtube, and then found Eddie through Ari, and then (being a big MMA fan) realized the connection between Eddie and Joe Rogan (who's commentary I love, and who's "reverse-side-arm-triangle-set-up-then-cartwheel-over-for-the-kill" move has become one of the staples of my game) -and I was sold.

It was only after all that when I was even aware of Eddie's famous match. But seriously, the first American to tap a Gracie as a Brown Belt on the World stage? I don't hear anyone clamoring for a rematch between US and Russia to make sure the 1980 Hockey game wasn't a fluke. Its called the "Miracle on Ice". Doesn't matter that the Russians were powerhouses before then and after. That day was the United States day; and so was 2003 for Eddie.

In my humble opinion, Eddie has already cast himself into the history of Jiu Jitsu as a Legend and as an Innovator; the only question that remains is how far and wide his influence reaches in the end. Ha! If there is an end! His influence still seems to be accelerating...! I know I'm doing my part. :)

as a lover of the triangle choke, do you know how hard it is to triangle choke a wily blue belt? or purple belt? or brown belt? or black belt? Or multiple degree black belt Gracie?

Rank and origin in this case did make all the difference. A black belt, whatever degree is still a black belt, who has not lost in that competition ever loses to a brown belt doesn't mean a thing? It always means something when someone from a lower class beats an upper class. It is a big deal, and obviously it's a big deal to Royler because he wants the rematch as well!

Im more excited at the fact Eddie is competing again..Although its prob just one match but we still get to see him against one of the greats one last time

it was a good marketing strategy to retire after that win. If he competed and lost in a rematch 10th planet might not be so big. Its jiu jitsu but this world is about making a dollar. so kudos to eddie on that. In my opinion Eddie didnt beat him with 10th planet moves. Eddie caught him in a triangle. Yes he used the lockdown and rubber guard but thats not how he won. Either way id be pretty syked if I tapped anyone of that stature im sure you would be too

He actually did use a 10thPlanet technique to catch Royler how about the pyramid set up to triangle

it looked like he had an over hook with his leg across his back not the back of the neck/shoulder blade. with wrist control and threw up a triangle. just my opinion

I love Eddie and Royler, but if i were to put money on who I'd thinkj would win a rematch I would put it on ~eddie simply cuz his techniques are constantly evolving... while i don't think roylers has changed very much over the years. Although... at the end of the day anyhting can happen. It really depends on who's got their shit together on the day,
