If this happened who would win? How? At what time?
Marcelo would most likely get Eddie's back at some point during the match, but he would lack the squeeze to finish someone like Eddie. :)
In my truly honest opinion i think that eddie is a great no gi guy but marceelo would submit him in under 5 minutes. I think even if you asked eddie this he would agree. I know eddie is a great bjj guy but imo Marcelo is the best and Eddie is 2nd.
Eddie 2nd, that's to much nut hugging for my liking. There's no doubt eddies a great innovator and teacher but sometimes the best teachers aren't always the best at what they do. I'm sure there's loads of guys who could beat eddie but that doesn't mean they are better teachers. Marcelo is on a whole other level. All you have to watch is marcelo rolling with einstein and eddie rolling with einstein, just a different kettle of fish all together.
Eddie's gone on record saying he knows he would get smashed, and there's absolutely no shame in that. Marcelo "grapples like God".
Are we talking right now? or if they had a few months to train? If right now, i think Marcelo would finish the fight with a rear naked.. maybe within the 5-6 minute mark.. but i think it would be an AWESOME 5-6 minutes. i bet we'd see a lot of transitions/submission escapes. But I dont think eddie is ready to compete right now without getting back in competition shape. If you gave them a few months.. i think it might go to stale mate. Just because i think Eddie has enough respect for Marcelo that he would want to put everything he had into training. And would most likely be close to his top potential. I would see him training for that match much like he would for Royler. (assuming we are talking about an actual competition match between the two and not just sparring around). But that all being said.. i would agree with watty.. i would absolutely LOVE to train under either of them.. but if i had to choose.. i would prefer training under eddie. You have to think.. Marcelo would win.. but im sure a lot of that has to do with the fact that hes still what? 27ish? and competing quite often. so he is still in his prime. (not using that as an excuse for eddie.. if they were both in their prime.. i still wouldnt see eddie tapping marcelo, id still give it a stale mate) But eddie seems to have more of a "corner man's" eye. And seems to be good at finding ways to make you better on an individual/personal level. For instance finding a system/method to use all of your strengths and stay away from your weaknesses. Anyway.. i think the better question here is.. Marcelo or Renato? ;)
the world would crumble as their power levels clashed, and we would all die.
Let me throw in a bonus question... Who is the better instructer?
Haha who do you really think is the better coach/instructer though i think that this is alot closer than the debate on who would win in a no gi bjj match.
I'm curious as to why everyone is saying Marcelo by RNC. Dude hasn't done a RNC on anyone that isn't much bigger than him in a long ass time. He's too busy Guillotining everyone.

like god reachin down and smackin the devil u never know exactly what mite happen
Easy tiger, i just thought it seemed like he was sucking up by saying eddie bravo was 2nd in the bjj world thats all. I might have miss understood him, but it did seem like someones nuts were being hugged. Anyway who cares silly discussion anyway. Until they fight no one knows.
How was i hugging eddies nuts??? I said marcelo would submit him in under 5 minutes.
People are really arguing over who better instructors are between two world class guys? it says you live in Ohio... Have you trained at either Eddie or Marcelo's Academies? How would you know?
I can understand talking about a hypothetical (even if a bit silly) fantasy match, but actual instructional skills?
I dont think i understand the emotional attachment that you seem to have between my comment and yourself? If somehow my opinion on who i would rather train under has offended you.. im sorry. But to get what appears to be offended over someone answering a question on their opinion of who they would rather instruct them seems equally as silly. Obviously people have preferences to who they would like to train under.. Just like people prefer different coaches in any other sport over others.. Im not saying in any way that Marcelo isnt a great instructor because i prefer eddie as a teacher.. nor am i saying i think eddie isnt good at jiujitsu because i would see marcelo winning the match.. But to say because i have never trained under them somehow means i cant form an opinion on the subject seems a little.. dramatic? I've also never met Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant.. but in my opinion.. i see Jordan as a better Basketball player. Can i prove that? no. But ive seen them both play many times.. and thats just my opinion. Its ok to disagree.. no need to turn this into anything more than people sharing opinions. As for the apparent offending due to my guess of preferred instructor.. That was made solely off of watching their videos. And in no way do i think everyone is going to agree with me.. In fact i would say there are a lot of people that marcelo would probably be better for in the world of jiujitsu as an instructor.. but for me.. in my personal opinion.. I prefer Eddie just because of what ive seen in his ability to see a persons strengths and weaknesses and his ability to keep an open mind on what works better for them rather than expecting everyone to perform all the moves the exact same. (and please dont read too much into that statement and think im saying marcelo cant, im just saying compared to a lot of places ive been.. eddie tends to have the most open mind) So again.. Sorry if i offended you by sharing my opinion.. but I think in situations like these.. its often better to just assume I'm being immature or childish with my choosing to answer the question and ignore me and let it go rather than waste energy responding and potentially causing negative discussions on the internet. Let's just agree to disagree and move on ;)
As for this.. i was guessing RNC because i think eddie has a sick defense game and the only one i could see him getting caught in would be a RNC. Without getting his back.. it would just seem REALLY hard to catch him in something. And I havent seen much of Marcelo's RNC since 2003ish.. but it was AMAZING back then.. so i would have to assume it would be equally as good or better now. And even without getting it under his neck.. just locking that up on a jaw or even with a hand in there.. it would tap someone. So I just guessed that would be the highest percentage chance for him.. but maybe not.. who knows.
I'm not offended at all. No emotional attachment. I was just asking if you've trained with either instructor, and if not, how could you actually know?
I have no issues with you at all. You took an anthill and made a mountain. I don't see how anyone said anything negative...
???
Right now Marcelo has kind of let go of the RNC. It's not that he doesn't do it. He did it on Bruno Bastos in the Open at ADCC 09, but he's pretty much Guillotining everyone and their mother, simply because he doesn't even have to take the back to do so, and his hip-drop/elbow-lift is as secure as a figure-4/RNC grip.
Marcelo's best chance against anyone in 2011 is a Guillotine or North/South choke. I mean don't get it confused, he's still taking backs... But on same sized or smaller opponents he doesn't do it as much as he used to. If he does he tends to use the crucifix, as he believes the armdrag is a little more predictable and relies on speed and athleticism to a degree. He also doesn't play a reverse De La Riva style guard where he can invert and attack the back through the backdoor.
His Mata Leao is still ridiculous though. You aren't incorrect.
The thing about the Guillotine is just that everyone will accidentally leave themselves open for it, even for a split second. Marcelo has learned to see this split second coming, so not only can he get his grips in time, but he has the best technique for finishing the Guillotine of anyone to ever walk the earth. Seriously. There's no escape from that shit and if he gets it it will tear your fucking head off your shoulders.
I agree his guillotine is incredible.. and in fact i would say the one he does where he lets them turn into them from side control or half guard and grab his leg would probably be great against someone familiar with the 10th planet system because of our tendancy to go from lockdown to going for the truck. I forget the name that hes calling it but its on his website as one of the new videos. So who knows.. maybe that would be his best bet against eddie. But whatever moves they are going to.. I would LOVE to see that match. I just wish there was a way to do it in a closed gym with no cameras.. just so we wouldnt have to hear either side talk about either one being better for the next 50 years. Kind of like the Royler/Eddie match. It just seemed to cause more drama than its worth. Dont get me wrong I think it was great, but it just seems like so many people get emotionally attached to the people they look up to and then you have to hear excuses from one side and bragging from the other forever after that lol. I would prefer to see perhaps Marcelo come do a class at HQ sometime and see him and Eddie roll afterwards with no big crowds or pressure. That would be a great time
I also would much rather see a friendly roll than a match. Obviously no one is going to take offense to this, but Eddie isn't trying to compete right now. There are only a small handful of people that can beat Marcelo in the most competitive circumstances, and only one man that possibly has his number (Braulio Estima. Horribe style match-up for Marcelo.) I don't think there's any question as to whether Marcelo would beat Eddie in a match or not. The only question would be how. When Eddie had the video on Sub101 praising Marcelo he was already saying he wanted to see how long he could "survive" with Marcelo, and Marcelo's game is light years beyond what is was at the time of that video.
Threads like this are kind of silly. I wasn't calling you silly, but the idea in general. There's no reason for them to have a match. They aren't even in the same weight class. I just see this thread as being a fantasy matchmaking thing, which is fine, but the idea of 2011 Marcelo Garcia (who just won the Worlds in 09 and 10, and got Silver at ADCC 09) fighting a legend that has focused on instructing since 2003 seems goofy. That's a lifetime with how the sport is growing, and Eddie does a fucking fantastic job keeping up and paying attention to who is who and what techniques are being used out there. He's a wonderful instructor.
At the same time, he would be the first person to say Marcelo is "the king" lol.
In my very humble opinion, Braulio Estima is the guy Marcelo needs to be training for when he walks onto the white mats of Abu Dhabi for the Absolute this year. That's the best no-gi player alive right now when you break down the numbers. He beat everyone in Abu Dhabi last time at his weight and in the Absolute, almost all by submission. He beat Vinny Magalhaes, broke Rafael Lovato Jr.'s ankle, he choked out Marcelo Garcia and Andre Galvao, and finished Xande. He's the man right now to watch in no-gi for Absolute divisions.
i think eddie can finish when he puts marcelo in the guard
and i think marcelo would finish from back mount
top people i wanna see eddie roll with
marcelo
andre galvao
demian maia
top people i wanna see use 10th planet jiu jitsu

marcelo
ryan hall
No one can beat Marcelo.
You all think Marcelo would win but they tricked you because they wore each others rash guards. It was really Eddie ; )
Except for Braulio Estima...twice...by submision.

I know I'm coming off as a dick, but it just seems like there's a lot of people that aren't really keeping up with what's going on in submission grappling. This is a 10th Planet forum so I understand not keeping up with BJJ stuff, but it's important to know that Braulio Estima won the last ADCC in his own weight and Absolute while subbing guys like Marcelo, Lovato Jr, Galvao, Xande, etc, to get there.
Hell Marcelo got Silver at 76k in the last ADCC. He lost to Pablo Popovitch. Granted, it was a slightly controversial match and he's submitted Pablo twice before.
Marcelo is my favorite grappler of all time, and always will be. But to read "no one can beat Marcelo" is just uninformed and looks silly.
lol you guys are smart assess. you know what i mean. Hes on a god level of jiu jitsu lol :)
