mma top 10 pound for pound!!!

1. Anderson Silva (1): Silva has so thoroughly cleaned out the middleweight division that everyone is talking about putting him in a superfight against the champion of another weight class. If that's what happens, I'd rather see Silva take on Jones than take on Georges St. Pierre. As the best fighter in the sport, Silva should test himself by taking on a bigger opponent, not a smaller opponent.

2. Georges St Pierre (2): The upcoming fight with Jake Shields is a great example of how we've all just come to expect consistent greatness from GSP: Shields is a terrific fighter who's riding a 15-fight winning streak, and yet it's hard to find anyone who really thinks Shields has much of a chance. We can practically hear Bruce Buffer announcing that all three judges scored the fight 50-45 for St. Pierre right now. That's just what's assume of GSP these days.

3. Jon Jones (9): Is it too soon to put Jones up this high? I don't think so. Not after the way he destroyed a legend in Shogun. Not after the way he's dominated everyone he's faced, from Ryan Bader to Vladimir Matyushenko to Brandon Vera and even Matt Hamill in the fight Jones lost by disqualification. Jones isn't just winning, he's winning like Secretariat in the Belmont. No one at 205 pounds is close.

4. Jose Aldo (3): The featherweight division is arguably the UFC's weakest, and that means it's a little tough to gauge Aldo against the champions of the deeper weight classes. But he's been spectacular so far, building up an 18-1 record at age 24, and I expect him to whip Mark Hominick at UFC 129.

5. Dominick Cruz (5): Cruz has a 17-1 record and only a couple of those 17 wins have even been close. So there's no arguing with what he's accomplished in the sport so far. However, the one loss is to Urijah Faber, who will now challenge Cruz for the bantamweight belt. We'll find out in the rematch whether Cruz has improved enough since losing to Faber in 2007 to really be considered one of the sport's elite, or whether Faber will be back on the pound-for-pound list.

6. Frank Edgar (6): It's amazing how much the lightweight division in MMA has changed in the last year. Before Edgar beat B.J. Penn in April of 2010, the lightweight class was viewed as fairly weak, with Penn head and shoulders above the rest. Now it's viewed as a shark tank full of challenges, with a long line of contenders already in the UFC, coming to the UFC from the WEC or (eventually) coming to the UFC from Strikeforce. But one thing that hasn't changed since April is that Edgar is at the head of the class.

7. Gray Maynard (7): First in line for Edgar's belt is Maynard, who fought him to a draw in January and gets a rematch in May. Maynard has a great chance of dethroning Edgar, but if he loses he'll spend the rest of his career kicking himself for failing to finish Edgar in the first round of their classic New Year's Day fight.

8. Cain Velasquez (8): The king of the heavyweights remains out of commission, awaiting a bout with the Brock Lesnar-Junior dos Santos winner, likely in the fall.

9. Joseph Benavidez (10): Having now moved from the WEC to the UFC, Benavidez just keeps winning, taking a unanimous decision over Ian Loveland at UFC 128. Benavidez is 14-2, with the only two losses coming to Cruz, even though he's fighting in a weight class above where he should be. I still maintain that the UFC needs to start a 125-pound flyweight division, and that if that ever happens Benavidez will reign as the division's champion. For now, he's just below championship-caliber, while consistently fighting bigger opponents.

10. Jon Fitch (NR): After a controversial draw with B.J. Penn in February, Fitch will get a chance to finish things in their rematch in July. I thought he deserved to win the first fight, and I think he'll beat Penn more convincingly the second time around and show that even if he can't beat St. Pierre, he's better than anyone else at 170 pounds

I think you are a bit too high on Jon Jones and too low on Jose Aldo and Cain Velasquez. I mean you may be right, and over the next 2-3 fights Jon Jones may prove you correct, however the only information we have right at this moment is who Jon Jones has beat and beating ryan bader and shogun rua who has been submitted by Forrest Griffin and had 2 knee surgeries in 3 years does not put you on top 3 pound for pound. As I said earlier though, Jones may crush evans+ rampage and a regurgitated griffin in amazing fashions in the near future and prove you correct, unfortunately we do not have that information available to us at this moment.

This is a tricky list to compile with the addition of the WEC fighters...and the seeming drop off in talent after title holders. Undisputed though I would have Andersen, GSP, Aldo, and Jones. Edgar would be in there as of late, and I would probably group in Faber and Bennevidez. The heavyweights are tricky...it seems any man can win on his night. Also what about the other affiliations...as well Jake Shields should probably be on the list for his wall of accomplishment, at least until his showing vs. GSP.

tricky tricky...but the tight competetion is good for MMA, even if the title holders may be just that for a while.

It doesnt matter about the surgery, Shogun said he was 100% and had ample time to recover, plus, knocking out Lyoto was a great win for Shogun, and to have Jones just dominate him like that should def. give Jones a nod to the top ten, if not the top 5.

Well then he should learn that if you write something down using your account on a forum and do not say anything about where you got that information, it is automatically assumed that it is written by you. Proper way of handling this would be, such and such claim that the top 10 is ... and I agree with them. If not, then write your own top 10 and your reasons behind it. I am sure he did not do it on purpose and it is not that big of a deal, but there is nothing wrong with learning proper citation.

Lol come on man, this isn't a legal memo or anything, it's a jiu jitsu forum, and if I recall correctly, Emir is something like 13 years old? People seem to be very quick to attack him on here and a lot of the time I think it's uncalled for, so someone's gotta stand up for the youngster. So he forgot to list the URL, or maybe he didn't even think to list the URL, either way, what's the difference? Let him be. (im not trying to start shit, just being forthright)

Sorry i just saw it on mmafighting.com..this is deffinetly not my list, i would of posted the link but i had to go train and do a few other stuff, i was deffinetly going to post the link right after school. I dont want to get anyone mad, and yes i am 13, i appriceate you standing up for me matt but nothing that anyone i dont know says to me over the internet is going to affect me in any shape or form besides tips and improvements i could make in my jiu jitsu or standup. And yes we are all here because we're big fans of jiu jitsu specificly 10th planet jiu jitsu and eddie bravo, by the way that is a FANTASTIC picture kiko haha.

I still stay behind what I said. If Emir is 13, than he should plan to go to college. If he is gonna go to college, he has to take English 1 and English 2 at the very least. Both classes are going to force him to properly quote things that he uses on his papers, therefore if he gets used to it now by us reminding him on a jiujitsu forum where he is not getting graded on his posts, it will be much easier for him in the future. And no I am no trying to knack on him, I am trying to steer him correct from an early age. It's up to him if he wants to take the advice or say fuck it.

If he comes here and says that he does not brush his teeth, I would tell him that he should brush his teeth before he goes to bed. And I am not sure why you keep on saying you do not want to argue, nobody is arguing man, we are just talking.

Here, this is Sherdog's list for top 10 PnP. I would lower Frankie Edgar, kick Rashad out until he beats Jones and put in Nick Diaz instead of Gilbert.
1. Georges St. Pierre (21-2)
St. Pierre’s welterweight title reign has earned him some flak for being conservative and safety-first, not showing the shocking dynamism that marked, for instance, his second encounter with Matt Hughes. However, in the last three-and-a-half years since his major misstep against Matt Serra, St. Pierre has positively crushed every opponent in his way, whether or not the judges were needed. He has beaten three fighters -- Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn and Thiago Alves -- who have appeared on this very list in that time span. Better still, he has done it while pitching complete shutouts. St. Pierre’s level of consummate domination against fighters in a division as great as welterweight is shocking, if not thrilling. Wilder still, he has the chance to expand on that resume heading into 2011, as his next welterweight defense will come against another pound-for-pound entrant on this list, Jake Shields.

2. Anderson Silva (28-4)
With one front kick on Feb. 5, Silva stifled all talk of his diminished dominance over the middleweight division. Following a Hail Mary fifth-round submission of Chael Sonnen last August, the “Spider” sought to make a statement against challenger Vitor Belfort, and make a statement he did. Silva’s elegant, seemingly effortless first-round knockout of his countryman at UFC 126 was a throwback to the violence of his earliest Octagon appearances, the sort of thing fans knew him for prior to controversial outings against the likes of Thales Leites and Demian Maia. With a proposed superfight against fellow pound-for-pound great Georges St. Pierre apparently now on the UFC back burner, Silva awaits the next contender to his 185-pound throne.

3. Jose Aldo (18-1)
Aldo has quickly cemented himself as the sport’s premiere featherweight. He would have had the chance to consolidate that reputation further on Jan. 1 at UFC 125, where he was scheduled to take on fast-rising prospect Josh Grispi. However, an ongoing back injury forced Aldo out of the fight, and into rehab. Now healed, the 24-year-old phenom will risk his brand new UFC title for the first time in his Octagon debut against Mark Hominick, who he faces on the Canadian’s home turf at UFC 129 on April 30.

4. Frankie Edgar (13-1-1)
After twice upsetting the man considered by some to be the sport’s greatest lightweight, Edgar looked to erase the only blemish on his record in a Jan. 1 rematch with Gray Maynard. For five minutes, it appeared that Edgar would have a second mark chalked up in his loss column, as the “Bully” dealt out a throttling which nearly saw the champ finished on multiple occasions. In a show of heroic mettle, Edgar valiantly battled back over the next four rounds to salvage a draw and set up a rubber match between the pair, set for UFC 130 on May 28 in Las Vegas.

5. Jon Fitch (23-3-1)
While Fitch didn’t lose against B.J. Penn on Feb. 27, he also failed to do something which he had done in 13 of his 14 previous UFC outings -- win. It was not for lack of trying, as the onetime welterweight title challenger threw all he had at former two-division champ Penn, but a bruising final frame from Fitch was not enough to avoid a split draw. Fitch will have a chance to resolve the first stalemate of his eight-year career when he meets the “Prodigy” for a second time on July 2 at UFC 132.

6. Jake Shields (26-4-1)
Over the last five years, Shields has taken out elite opposition in two weight classes, emerging as a top-five fighter at both 170 and 185 pounds. In spite of an often straightforward, nuts-and-bolts style of top-position grappling, Shields has become one of the sport’s most accomplished competitors in recent memory. Now, he has the chance to improve his already outstanding résumé with a shot at reigning UFC welterweight king Georges St. Pierre at UFC 129 on April 30.

7. Jon Jones (13-1)
Jones enters the pound-for-pound rankings on the strength of his brutal win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua on March 19. In claiming the UFC light heavyweight title, the 23-year-old put on the sort of performance so rare that even those beyond the sport’s purview took notice. While he has looked virtually untouchable to this point in his career, Jones’ path will get no less bumpy from here: in his first title defense, “Bones” will meet former titleholder, pound-for-pounder and now ex-teammate Rashad Evans.

8. Gilbert Melendez (18-2)
Although a proposed New Year’s Eve rematch with Dream champion Shinya Aoki failed to materialize, Melendez’s next opponent will indeed be sourced from Strikeforce’s Japanese sister promotion. On April 9, “El Nino” will put his Strikeforce 155-pound belt on the line against fellow top 10 lightweight Tatsuya Kawajiri, who bested Melendez’s training partner-cum-rival Josh Thomson on Dec. 31.

9. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (19-5)
Returning from nearly a year-long layoff due to surgery on his seemingly ever-injured knee, Rua did not have much to offer young challenger Jon Jones in their March 19 title bout at UFC 128. The third-round stoppage was the first true knockout of the Brazilian’s career, and perhaps the first when Rua never looked competitive. Nonetheless, whenever he returns, the former champion will likely remain a threat to most any fighter in the UFC’s 205-pound division.

10. Rashad Evans (15-1-1)
Sidelined for 10 months -- first waiting for Mauricio Rua’s knee to heal, and later his own -- Evans will have a chance to once again stake his claim as the UFC’s top 205-pounder, though not against the man he thought. Now-former teammate Jon Jones, who stepped in for Evans on short notice and earned gold at UFC 128, is the new man atop the heap who “Suga” will attempt to dethrone upon his return to the Octagon.

Before we put ANYONE on a pfp list, I suggest perhaps we need to see them in at least 20-25 fights, because how a guy stacks against adversity/bad style matches is really the way we determine greatness, not how well they do against folks they match well against.

Fedor was P4P best in my opinion. His record before his last couple of fights is why I think so. I wish he could've done his thing in the UFC though =(. Stupid cross circuit rules/contracts =(. What he do 29 fights in a row undefeated or something?

This is what I am trying to say also. You can put Jon Jones on top of the 205 ladder since he is the champion, but you need to wait a little and see what he does before the p4p list. Of course if your constructing the list from a factual not a fanboy point of view. Let Jones win more fights destroy other opponents in this class, move around in weight like go and take out a couple 230 pound heavyweights, and then we can place him on the p4p. Also I don't think anybody who is cutting massive weight should be on a p4p list since p4p is looking for the best overall fighter, not the strongest guy who can man handle his opponents because they are cutting weight. I like Jones and I love watching his fights, but I am not willing to change my understanding of p4p for him. For him to be truly pound for pound, he needs to prove himself in the HW division where he belongs. Guys like Siva, Penn, Edgar, Aldo ... are all fighting very close to their off season weigh and when they win a match, you know they won because pound for pound they were the better fighter. Their fighting performance is determined while they are in the ring. If you are going to consider their p4p rating then you need to compare their fighting ability to what weight they are actually performing at and guys like Jones, Anthony Johnson etc.. are nowhere near what they weigh in at, when they walk on that mat.
