most people are right handed.
/thread
sometimes il switch my stance up even though im right handed because it can offer me benefits, like being able to throw stronger jabs and having a right kick that has to travel a shorter distance, giving me a have a powerful kick that can stop people from ever entering my range.
so if your orthodox you can get more power from your shots but if you go southpaw you can get good shots in faster
Thank you Muhammad
I switched to mostly south paw for the hard hitting strait jab and getting angles on people a little easier. I figure if you dont respect my jab power then whats to stop someone from shooting in and taking me down of the jab. Since there are less south paws, people dont as easily recognize when someone has gotten a good striking angle on them. You can take advantage of that extra split second when they are realizing something is not normal. I still switch stances. I switched to south paw after a leg injury because i didnt want to be leg kicked on my bad leg and never swicted back.
forgot...original question answer. most people are right handed and want there power hand to hit as hard as possible, and a lot of trainers do not advise switch stances because you have to learn how to do everything differently. not different like mirrored opposites but completly different approach to strategy and techniques
I naturally stand south paw but I can write with both hands... I dont like switching stances either. Im not sure how many orthodox people dont like to switch, but I for one like my stance. If you can switch im sure it helps, but standing southpaw for me is normal and its pretty hard for most rightys to deal with in my exp.
a lot of fighters don't stand southpaw simply because it's natural for them to stand orthodox. Way back when boxing began they used to actually retrain southpaw fighters to fight orthodox because it was viewed as a disadvantage. however, it was later on discovered that being southpaw is beneficial in a fight. There was actually a recent study done showing that left handed people were more successful violent societies than right handed people. A southpaw has an advantage standing firstly because orthodox fighters are used to fighting other orthodox fighters so the angles that their strikes come from seem unnatural. A seasoned southpaw on the other hand fights orthodox fighters all the time so he's used to the angles that the striking are coming from.
Personally I think it's best to be efficient in both stances, southpaw and orthodox. The best fighter IMO is the most well rounded one.
My coach is ambidextrous, lucky sob lol. so he has no trouble off of either, but he does prefer to fight Southpaw :)
If you have a weak jab, or lead hook, because it is with your off hand, your training/power are the issue, not the hand you choose to lead with. There are some advantages with being a right handed southpaw, especially in something like MMA where you are then able to shoot off of your strong leg.
Most of the advantages are that you will be less common a foe for people you line up with, all the strong hand forward stuff only means IMO the people saying it should have trained more with that lead (weak) hand to make it better. I know alot of people who are right handed who have devastating left hooks and very good jabs, but they worked on them alot, rather than accepting the quick gratification of using the dominant hand to throw them.
It mostly just has to do with comfort level it can feel very awkward fighting with your dominant hand forward or back.
A lot of times you will see a grappler put their strongest side forward to help with take-downs and clinching and with their weak hand back they gain near equal striking power with their strong hand.
And on the same note you see strikers put their strong hand back to gain even more power in their strong side attacks and they are not as worried about grappling.
In my case I can fight with both stances but I fight completely different from them.....I'm right handed and my strong hand lead lets me use more spin kicks and elbows ect... and feels more comfortable wrestling with my strong hand forward.
My southpaw I can't use spins as well but I'm more comfortable clinching and my Muay Thai overall is cleaner but my wrestling attacks feel weird.
I attribute my own comfort level in each to my strong leg, With it forward I have a more stable plant to spin or drive for takedowns from while with it back my weak leg is my plant for those things and it doesn't feel as stable.
;-P Oops I meant orthodox in that last part not SouthPaw first part is SouthPaw ;)
Im an ambi and fight southpaw. Its just alot more comfortable for me as opposed to orthodox. Ive had a few trainers try to convince me to switch to an ortho stance because its "better"
Ambidexterity, true ambidexterity fighting, is a myth, if folks mean they are good fighting both orthodox and southpaw. Well I should explain that, I have seen folks who are mediocre on both sides, but I have never seen anyone who was really good on both sides.
I guess you dont know what I mean when I say really good. I mean, able to do everything equally from both sides. Those guys are good enough to switch stances as it suits them against high level competition, but against top end guys, with the fight on the line, they dont do it, they stick to what they are good at. Meaning just because their bad side is good enough to use it from time to time in a high end fight, doesnt, in any way, mean they are equally good on both sides, because even they, are not. Gomi had strategic reasons for fighting orthodox, mainly to hit that liver against Jens, and he was fighting a sliding Jens. He still fights Southpaw when its for all the marbles.
Face palm that my friend.
they are both really good on both sides. That's why gomi was able to destroy pulver orthodox. He's not "mediocre" on both sides. He's really good. So is Silva. And Silva switches stances up all the time in fights, and ALL his fights have been top end since 2007.
