My letter to all of the "Bravo Bashers" out there!

I wish all these Jiu Jitsu practitioners out there would stop hating on 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu and Eddie Bravo. Most of them don't even truly know what 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu is all about! The truth is that 10th Planet is more of a open-minded philosophy comprised into a system that is constantly changing and evolving whereas most systems have "THEIR" techniques that they do and nothing more. It's a common mis-conception by most JJ players that Eddie Bravo's system is all about the twister and the rubber guard only when nothing could be further than the truth. The 10th Planet "system" is a very fruitful collect of no gi grappling techniques that descends from many practitioners personal arsenals and different grappling systems alike. These techniques are then reviewed by Instructors and students of 10th Planet schools and added to the system once they have become declared practical and proven their usefulness on the mat at high levels. Eddie has always credited techniques or other knowledge by others that he has received and added to the system. Then Eddie is the man who properly names (if the technique doesn't already have a name), catalogs, and produces these techniques into a cirriculum which in my humble opinion is his greatest achievement ever aside from his respected victory over Master Royler Gracie (who is my Masters younger brother). So to all my Brothers and Sisters of Jiu Jitsu out there, please be open-minded enough to look into it before you condemn it! If you're going to hate something, you might as well know about what it is that you're hating right? And who knows, you might just learn something....

Na man. Master Relson does but as for me in southern Alabama and my Brothers in Middle MS. We don't care! What works is what works. Especially if it's been proven!

Point in case. I have a friend of mine who trains @ Relson's in MS. and he is bad ass at playing De La Riva and spider guard! Relson can't stand those Guards because he is a man who practically worships his father and his teachings and unfortunately Grandmaster Helio Gracie never adapted that to his arsenal! Long story short, my friend went to one of Relson's tourny's just two weeks after receiving his purple belt a wiped out his division comprised of one two and three year purple belts using De La Riva and spider guard.

Moral of the story = the 10th Planet philosophy!

If it works on high levels, USE IT!!!

Let's also take a moment to recognize the amount of respect being thrown Eddie's way, especially after the Korean Zombie's historic Twister. There may be haters out there, but they're a dying breed.

People are dumb. You'd think it would be common sense that adaptability and open-mindedness would be a good thing in an evolving sport, but group-think and crazy egos prevent any kind of improvement or addition by traditionalists. 10th Planet will be accepted, but it will be move by move until the entire arsenal is accepted.

People see the Korean Zombie and there are 3 reactions:
1) WTF was that move, I think I'll look it up.
2) Lucky, low percentage. Eddie doesn't know shit.
3) Finally, someone is paying attention to this style of no-gi grappling.

People in group 3 KNOW this shit works, people in 2 are either looking for the mystical move that works every time or so firmly grounded in tradition they are starting to grow roots. It's sad.

right!!!! i love to fly kung fu, 10thplanet got me makin up my own shit (been doin a double trap grab from the meathook call it the slaughter house, similar to exhumer its either guy pushes off my chest givin me elbows, hand to the mat or i can still work for wrist control by letting go reverting back to . Eddie is one of my idols. always gives credit where its due, truly a standup guy because just as the gracies gave us gracie jiu jitsu he gave us great technique & great philosophy. Cant stress how much the system improved my game ....much love for that bruva (we shall vape one day, some good good haha B)

At least realize and adapt the philosophy of 10th planet to their game but as far an "entire arsenal" being accepted, I don't think there is truly such a thing. Every martial art has techniques that work better for some than others based on their body types, athleteism, speed and overall understanding of the techniques. Every style of grappling has things that are dis-regarded including 10th Planet. Look at the London, Eddie threw it out because people were evolving and it was becoming in-affective. That's another thing that I love about 10th Planet. If it works, use it. If it doesn't, scrap it!

It's like any major change, it'll take time, and it'll have LOTS and LOTS of resistance. How long did the whole world believe that the world was flat? How many people were executed for preaching otherwise? Us .0000000000001% of the JJ community, us 10PJJr's of every skill level, size, race, and gender, are the frontline of this change. Yeah we may get bruised and battered verbally, but we have something that they don't. We know, not through faith, but by evidence and experimentation, that what we have is real, and that what we have is a growing, living thing.

Love Eddies philosophy! He is like the modern day Bruce Lee in the perspective of JJ. Bruce always looked for a technique that fit well into HIS arsenal. He didn't care if it came from TKD, Karate, Hapkido, Judo, JJ. If it worked and he liked it, he practiced it and made it his. That is all Eddie is doing, though gets dogged for it and Bruce is praised to this day.

No disrespect my friend but Mobile is not the only place in the world and Port City is not the only gym in the world. There are plenty of people near and far who still hate and still talk shit. When you jump from school to school like I do and train with different people, you pick up on the chatter. It's like saying terrorism is so 2001. Just because the problem isn't in your back yard doesn't mean that there's not a problem.

This is the path that most new paradigms (new world veiws ) take.
#1 They are met with riddicule.
#2 They are then met with anger (current 10th planet stage)
#3 They are excepted as self evident (ie why couldn't we see that before?)
Stage three sometimes takes a generation. But seeing how Eddie did in 5 years what took the Gracies 50 we should be able to speed that up a bit :) That's not Gracie bashing I'm also very pro Gracie and still train with the gi, but it is a fact that the biggest changes have come with nogi/ mma applications.

I love Eddie Bravo. I want to ask him over for Chicken and Dumplings and an evening of weed smoking and discussions of Jiu Jitsu, the spirit world and after livezzzzzzzz. I keep repping the system and my twisters are now spreading across different ranks of people. My rubber guard is doing pretty good. I just gotta keep putting in the reps. A year and 4 months of training Jiu Jitsu and I'll keep on repping 10thplanet. This summer is competition time.......as I approach my blue belt soon I want to show people around here like Scotty has done that the moves do work and its cool to do a little rubber guard or if you can't get that rear naked choke go for a twister. Hey all Jiu Jitsu is good. I love butterfly and xguard. I love Jiu Jitsu.

Basically my original statement meant that all the people that I train with and in this area in general are completely past bashing Eddie Bravo. The best way to prove someone wrong anyway is with action and not diplomacy. If someone want's to continue hating you can gladly take the situation to the mats, that is the beauty of it. My 2nd statement was not directed towards you, Josh, at all as I pretty much agreed with your assessment of my original statement. In retrospect it was slightly douchy but that guy keeps attempting to call me out for some reason or another and I wanted to put things in prospective for him.

I have to attack the general thread, while the motives are altruistic to get 10th planet jj accepted into the greater community as a whole the way you go about it really doesn't help.
If the system is as good as many of you claim then it will be accepted and your defence of it is not needed, you are never going to win over the haters through talk but through action.
10th planet is spread and its roots and soon will probably flower within a few years.
It will be proven and mainstream all without people defending Eddie or the system.
It is frustrating when someone rags on your lifestyle (Which is what jj seems to be, more than a sport) but the whole idea of the 10th planet system is to evolve is to keep on moving. You adapt you mutate and if it works you survive. You do not have to try slander brazilian jiu jitsu saying things like "outdated " or that their system "Is a set of moves that never changes" all you do then is create a divide and go against the mentality that your own system tries to teach.
You will make 10th planet JJ secluded from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a whole, which was never the intention, was not the point to learn from each other and keep BJJ as a whole moving forward and evolving?

I don't mean to be the downer in this thread & all but this letter is probably in the wrong place. You put this letter in a 10th Planet Forum & most people in this forum will support Eddie at the very least for his techniques & at most for his lifestyle, accomplishments & his techniques. So most people that read this will either agree with you or not read it because they support Eddie. You should post this in the Underground or on sherdog to spark some debate. Obviously Eddie read it & thanked you for it but at the end of the day, it isn't reaching the people that you claim that you wanted the letter to reach which is the "Bravo Bashers."

If we're going to reach any traditional jiu jitsu practitioner, especially the ones who are old school and have been in the game AND succeeding at what they've done for so many years, we just have to strive to be excellent at what we do personally with our own game. We'll have to be able to demonstrate it at the varying levels of competition, and optimally, but humble about it so we don't step on people's egos. It's hard to listen to a guy who makes you feel like you're retarded. Just be that local and cool 10PJJ guy and train hard, have fun, and enjoy the journey. I'm as white as white belts can come, and because of it, I'm not really smashing anyone who's more experienced in my gym....yet =D. Someday I'll be hitting swim moves from everywhere, trucks from everywhere, and finishing with moves that the traditional guys haven't seen or standard moves with new applications. It may not be tomorrow, or even a few months from now, but once I start hitting twisters in live rolls vs good opponents, it's inevitable that one of them will ask "how'd you do that?" or "can you show me that setup?" Once you're in that position, you can be super cool and show them in a fun manner. You'll go from the "Guy who gets smashed using 10th Planet" to "The cool 10th Planet Guy with effective/unorthodox game." Just enjoy =D. I'm still trying to get whip ups from lockdown 2 old school with 0 gas in the tank and it's freaking hard as hell to do on bigger guys, but fun =D.
